Re: Running at 100% cpu
Process Lasso does a good job of keeping Handbrake running at just under 100% so I can do other tasks during an encode. There's a free version, but the paid version has the auto features you want. As s55 says, you're not going to appreciably shorten the life of your CPU if your temps are OK.

[In-Progress] Please add a PAUSE button
With a new release imminent, it's time to finally expose the Pause capability on the Windows UI. Vidcoder has a PAUSE button, but the author seems to be losing interest in the program's development. It's well known that Handbrake has the capability, and it's a mystery to me why it hasn't been added ...

QSV quality getting better?
I encoded a 1080p video using QSV set to High 4.1 last night, and the result looked surprisingly good. Is it just my old eyes, or is the QSV encoding quality actually better in the latest nightlies?

Audio way out of sync
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/29526622/Title00-1.mkv%203-18-2014%207-40-44%20AM.txt I've done several encodes lately that result in the audio being way out of sync with the video--as much as 15 seconds. These are mostly DVDs converted to .mkv files using MakeMKV, and those files play fine. The...

Re: Increased DVD Rip Quality When Using Blu Ray Drive??
I've read that Blu-ray writers (blue laser) take longer to rip DVDs than a DVD writer (red laser) because they're optimized for BD media. I don't know if that's true, maybe I'll run a test since I have both. Ran a test today, and on my system anyway the opposite was true. The BD writer ripped the D...

Encode time estimator broken in Nightlies?
The last couple of nightlies, HB underestimates the encode time. About 2/3 through the encode, progress shows as 100% and Time Remaining shows as a negative number. Encode completes just fine--only the estimator isn't working.

Re: Noobie VHS capture to mp4
Try closing WinTV before you convert the file. WinTV does not close the capture file properly while it's still running.

Re: Quicksync hardware not detected
Virtu MVP doesn't have profiles, it has supported applications. Each entry has to point to the app's .exe file. You can add new apps, but you always get a warning that the app is not supported and may not work right.

Re: Quicksync hardware not detected
Both have to be added for iGPU mode. It used to be only the CLI but that is no longer the case since the GUI uses libhb now for certain functions I've had no luck using Virtu with both handbrake.exe and handbrakecli.exe added to their app list. I've gone back to the fake display, which works fine. ...

Re: No QSV option in new nightly
It wasn't on by default in the latest build. That's why I raised the issue, I didn't even know there was a Options setting now.
In any case, I checked the box and QSV appeared in the Video dropdown, and works just fine without Virtu MVP, so problem solved.
I agree the option's somewhat pointless.

Tools -> Options -> Video Tab -> Have you disabled it? No, but I see there's also an Enable checkbox, which is unchecked. Never saw that before. I'm sure that's the problem. Re: No QSV option in new nightly
No log, because all I did was launch HB (is there a startup log?). I tried without Virtu MVP (earlier builds worked without it), then installed Virtu, added both .exe files to the app list, and QSV stil didn't show up. Again, VidCoder Beta works fine without Virtu. QSV shows up and is used when I ru...

No QSV option in new nightly
The QSV option is no longer in the dropdown in the latest nightly (5891). Still there and working in latest VidCoder beta, which uses an earlier nightly.

Re: Handbrake won't open since Windows 8.1 update
Thanks, I tried to reinstall it and I'm having the same issue. It's very odd, Handbrake was working perfectly on my laptop with Windows 8 but since the recent (Windows 8.1) update it won't even open. Are you using the last official release or one of the nightlies? I only use HB on Win 7, but I have...

Re: H.264 Profile and H.264 Level using QuickSync
Just the H.264 profile and level widgets, not the rest. Those settings just tell the encoder what restrictions to apply to the bitstream, nothing more. So I assume that since the settings for those widgets in the High Profile preset work identically for QS and x264, there's no need to mess with the...

Re: H.264 Profile and H.264 Level using QuickSync
Drop the resolution to 960 wide, since your 'Retina' iPhone is only quarter HD. If you're happy with the output of QS at those settings on your phone, you can probably use much much faster x264 settings as an alternative. That's the correct setting for the iPhone 4, but the 5 models are 1136x640. I...

Re: H.264 Profile and H.264 Level using QuickSync
I guess where I'm getting confused is how the QS speed vs. quality settings relate to the H.264 profiles. If I'm using the High preset at 4.1, and enter an average bitrate, but set QS for more speed, what is QS changing to get that speed? Using the lower end of the spectrum of the profile instead o...

Re: H.264 Profile and H.264 Level using QuickSync
So you're saying the settings work identically for QS H.264 and x264 H.264, because they're both standards-compliant. And if I'm playing H.264 video on a computer and one portable device, and I know the proper SD and HD settings, I basically only need four combinations of settings ever, two per devi...

H.264 Profile and H.264 Level using QuickSync
What do H.264 Profile and H.264 Level do using QuickSync, as opposed to using x264? In other words, when would I want to change them from the defaults? Is a High/3.1 setting in the iPhone preset going to give me comparable results to the same settings using x264, or do I need to use High/4.0 to get ...
