I think you'd get the same quality and have it done a lot quicker if you simply calculate the average bitrate you'll need for your video to get it to 4GB and use the 2-pass encoding already in place.

OK, if remuxing isn't an option then I would strongly suggest you forego recompressing your current rips and just step up your plans to re-rip from the original discs.
