Re: AC3 Encoder Quality in nightlies
One big advantage of eac3to (ClownBD is simply a GUI frontend) is that it can be configured to use the reference Dolby/DTS decoders from vendors like Nero and Sonic. The one thing I haven't been able to completely figure out is why eac3to removes dialog normalization from AC3, E-AC3, DTS and TrueHD ...

Re: Best Picture Tab Settings For High Definition Input
Okay, I see. It does chop off the borders. Unfortunately, I see that in The Dark Knight, this means that it actually chops off some of the picture in the IMAX scenes. I compared the original scene where the guy gets shocked when he is trying to open the safe to the encode and you can quickly see th...

Re: Handbrake & Bluray Drives
Using a newer nightly build... If you decrypt the Bluray using AnyDVD HD (or similar), Handbrake should now be able to parse the BR structure for things like audio languages, chapters, etc. very similar to how Handbrake handles DVDs. At this point, there is no BR subtitle support. If the Bluray has ...

I'll take the high road and say that I really don't see this becoming an option since QT is not available on the Linux platform.

Re: Apple TV doesn't send AC3 to optical output?
That's odd then; without an activity log to confirm that an AC3 5.1 soundtrack was actually included in the encode, I'd suggest taking a look a the audio section on the AppleTV -- specifically checking to ensure Dolby Digital output is enabled. For whatever reason, my setup did not like the default ...

Re: Apple TV doesn't send AC3 to optical output?
Moved to devices.
A lot of TVs, especially older ones, can only pass two-channel audio when going from HDMI in to optical out. Without an activity log, I'm going to say this is what is happening in your case.

Re: AppleTV Custom Presets - 0.9.4
I'm trying High Profile again (with large file size checked); I haven't seen any posts on this, maybe I'm just missing it somewhere; But is it known to the forum that the AppleTV preset (.9.4) produces files that the new AppleTV 2 cannot keep up with? Re: SD DVD encoding for AT2/iPad/iPhone4
You should use decomb when your source is mixed (progressive/interlaced); if it is purely interlaced, deinterlacing would be more efficient. For DVDs, I leave both decomb and detelecine on all the time and can't complain about quality vs. time vs. convenience.

They are just containers; audio/video quality and encoding speed really doesn't come into play at this level. It's all about what your devices support -- you happen to be targeting two devices with completely different requirements.

Re: nightstrm "Best Settings" revised
Personally, I no longer use those settings as I only target the AppleTV (v2) and iPhone 4, both of which can playback 720p. While I'm still testing, I've done a few encodes with the settings below and been pleased with the results. I'm not sure if these settings will work with the PS3. High Profile ...

Re: Blu-ray -> New AppleTV: Ripping HW/SW advice needed
Yes, it could output 1080p, just not decode it. From what I understand, there was some question as to exactly what it was doing to output the picture to 1080p though, so the benefits of custom anamorphic may not have applied there either.Rodeo wrote:Did the ATV 1 output 1080p?

Re: Blu-ray -> New AppleTV: Ripping HW/SW advice needed
As I'm adventurous, I've started encoding some test filesfor the upcoming AppleTV revision from a few Bluray sources. I started with the High Profile x264 advanced settings, set RF to 21, use custom anamorphic (mod4) to resize to 1280x720, and no video filters, increase DPL2 track to 320kbps and DR...

Re: WVC-1 codec?
I don't mean to come across sounding ungrateful because I have been so happy with HB since day 1. But if this trend continues as I added more BD to my libraries, I fear that studios might make the WVC-1 interlaced their format of choice for this reason, albeit the format is inferior. Nevertheless; ...

.9.4 is very old; try using a nightly build as there have been numerous fixes included that will likely resolve this problem.

Re: Blu-ray -> New AppleTV: Ripping HW/SW advice needed
Which, from a practical standpoint, would mean increasing the filesize with no real tangible benefit, right? If so I can appreciate that, except that my RF16 encode also seemed to take less time than my RF19 encode. I did turn off the two filters that were defaulted on with the high profile preset,...

Re: Blu-ray -> New AppleTV: Ripping HW/SW advice needed
OK, so I did a couple more encodes of my movie since the last post. Just to recap, my first test was a 720p RF19 encode and *I think* it took about 8 hours with my AMD 3800+ and 2GB of RAM (which is immediately depleted, thereby using virtual RAM - ouch!). The resulting file was about 2.1GB and I w...

Re: Can I use Handbrake to compress already ripped DVDs?
It looks like Handbrake is having some issues with the input file. You may want to try using a nightly build as the .9.4 code is pretty old by now and there have been a lot of bugfixes/improvements since it was released.

Re: Blu-ray -> New AppleTV: Ripping HW/SW advice needed
OK, thanks. Just to clarify, when you suggest RF 23 for 1080, you're talking about if I want to keep the end result 1080, not if I'm downconverting 1080 down to 720 (in which case I'd use an RF of 21), correct? Because, as I said before, I'm focusing here on the new Apple TV which they're telling u...

Re: Blu-ray -> New AppleTV: Ripping HW/SW advice needed
I've used 20-21 before on my HD encodes (from Bluray/HDDVD) and had no issues streaming to my AppleTV. If output from the high profile preset streams reliably to the new AppleTV, I'll likely switch to using that preset with RF 21-22.

Re: Best Quality Setting for Apple TV
I'm betting the high profile preset will stream perfectly to the new AppleTV, so I've gone ahead and encoded some material to test with once my new AppleTV has arrived. Of course, unless Apple decides to ship preorders out early this week, I'll likely have to wait until next weekend to try them out ...

Re: Best Quality Setting for Apple TV
My hope is that the new CPU and updated codebase will allow high profile encodes to stream smoothly to the new AppleTV. I've already encoded a couple test clips to try out as soon as it arrives!
