Find max bitrate

Anything you guys/gals know of that can look at a video file and find the peak bitrate? Even better would be one that could graph out where in the file it is. I tried MediaInfo, but it does not seem to pull in the max bitrate from my MKV files (it has the field, but it is blank). Thanks.

Re: Bluray to mkv, my setting and need advice

The BR spec has a 30mb buffer and a max bitrate of 40mb, so using those settings ensures that your encode never exceeds the original spec. I do not know what the default buffer size is TBH, but you could always just not use that setting if you only want to limit the bitrate. Keep in mind limiting th...

Re: How do I copy the DVD Menu????

Indeed that's is what I've done. I actually just ripped an ISO of the DVD and then play it with VLC. I was just hoping there was some way to compress the video streams and keep the DVD-ness of the video, like store MP4 data in a VOB. But I understand where most people are coming from and I'll leave...

Re: File options (large, web, and iPod) greyed out...

Thanks Rodeo. What threw me off is that they were not initially greyed out when I selected MKV.

File options (large, web, and iPod) greyed out...

Not sure what happened, but I cannot select any of the 3 file options. It is only on MKVs and not MP4. If I delete the preset and recreate it It will be there until I close HB out and open it back up. Any ideas?

Re: Problem with dimensions jumping above maximum stated iPa

The video is 4:3 and your iPad is 16:9. So you need to set the height to be 720 and let the width auto adjust instead. You will need to do that for any 4:3 content.

Ability to change subtitle track name

I am surprised this has not come up yet, especially since you can rename audio tracks now. I would love to be able to rename sub tracks. This can help with tracks that are the same language (and are therefore usually named the same), but serve a different function (like anime with a track for text t...

Re: How do I copy the DVD Menu????

Can MKV or MP4 have more than one video track per file? If not, then implementing a menu would be faily useless. Sure you could select audio and subtitles, but media players already have a clean interface for that. I must inquire: why are menus so loathful? I understand that with a menu there is one...

Re: Bluray to mkv, my setting and need advice

Changing ref or B frames to be higher will get you better compression at the expense of encode time. If you want to keep your encode time low and do not care about file size you can keep them as is. I would change your audio to passthru, you are downmixing it and loosing quality because of it. I als...

Re: Curious: Why do Chapters not work in Windows Media Playe

Yes. Windows Media Player is a POS (Piece of S**T) ^This. WMP is terrible and does not adhere to many media standards (just like how IE does not adhere to many web standards, gotta love M$). I use VLC for low res SD videos and MPC-HC for my HD BR rips (VLC does not have good hardware acceleration a...

Re: Can't find a sweet spot for Nexus S / Desire HD

You can try the universal preset and lower your bitrate. but the 1Ghz snap dragon chip has more than enough grunt for even 4000kbps bitrate videos Then it may simply be the compression settings that the device cannot handle. The universal preset turns almost all of the advanced compression settings...

Very odd. I would do an uninstall and redownload the 0.9.5 and reinstall. The download on the site should be fine, but if it is not try here:

Re: AppleTV 2nd generation but turn off CABAC

Yes, indeed, I mis-spoke... Let me restate the question: How do I modify the AppleTV(2) preset so that it always limits the resolution to a max. width of 960 pixels; as does the AppleTV(1) preset. Thank you! First set a source. From the picture tab set anamorphic to none, check keep aspect ratio, a...

Re: Can't find a sweet spot for Nexus S / Desire HD

You can try the universal preset and lower your bitrate. The default CQ is 20, you could try 22 or 23. Also be sure your audio is being downsampled to stereo AAC, 128 should be fine for the audio bitrate.

Re: Are these settings a waste?

Your settings are very overkill. It is an iPhone, not a 70" TV. You do not need settings that extreme to get a good picture (especially since you are stretching the picture to the screen). Just use the preset, the quality will be fine.

Re: Constant Quality

CQ is a variable bitrate (more action = higher bitrate). There is no set CQ value that the phone can handle. You can cap it with vbv-maxrate=40000 though (BRs have a max bitrate of 40mb, which is what that sets it to). But if you used say a CQ of 18 and vbv-maxrate=40000 on a high action movie, you ...

Re: Inexplicable performance gain, with logs.

If I am reading Rodeo's post correctly it sounds like you lost your advanced settings because it took the -x as an invalid frame rate and not as an option. This means your string of advanced options was simply ignored. I assume this would return them to default. That would have an impact on both qua...

You also have to keep compatibility in mind. You could max out all the compression values, but you would end up with a file that hardly anything will play (probably not even your PC). Plus the higher values may not even yield you any compression benefit. That is why the tool tips for all the options...

Crashing on on a DVD at the same point every time.

I am ripping my DVD of Princess Mononoke. At about 96% the CLI crashes every time. So I play the movie from the DVD and skip to the end. I find out that just into the credits the video freezes and the audio keeps playing. The DVD is not scratched and I have only watched it a few times (never noticed...

[Accepted] Set secondary language prefrence

Right now we can set a primary language and use it for audio, subs or both. My suggestion is simple, add duplicate options for a secondary language. The option to use the secondary language as the primary if it exists in the source would also be good for those who prefer the original foreign languag...

Keep in mind that The Wire was filmed in 4:3, I would advise you not to crop it to 16:9 as you would loose a large chunk of picture.
