Actually CBR would be the worst quality. However, it sounds like you mean CRF or CQP when you're saying CBR. You are absolutely correct. I'm really off on this thread.... I went back to my last post and made changes with a note saying that I corrected it. I did mean CRF, but for some reason...

Hey jbrjake, A: it should be used on black and white movies to get rid of a green tinge and/or rainbow-colored shimmering I think I know what you mean, but are we talking about a green tinge that was already on the B&W movie BEFORE encoding? Yes, I've seen it, and being a purist, decide to keep ...

Just to clarify: we're talking about constant quality single-pass vs ABR double-pass. ABR double-pass will always be better than ABR single-pass. Thanks for pointing that out in case someone gets confused. Yes, CRF 1-pass is NOT ABR 1-pass. ABR 1-pass is actually, IMHO, an incomplete ABR 2-pass, al...

Advancements in the x264 implementation have made the need for 2-pass encoding to "improve quality" a thing of the past, especially in recent builds. Two pass encoding should be used only when you specifically want a certain exact size, otherwise save your processor the burden and just run...

Grayscale encoding is actually more of an editor/MPEG-2 encoder type of thing, before the MPEG-4/Xvid/H.264 encoding stage. And it's actually a filter that will affect the quality and may slow down the process. Use it ONLY if you specifically want something in black and white that ISN'T black and wh...

Hey Dynaflash, thanks for the post. Well, if the HB team wants to honor the Father of HandBrake, then I'm all for it. Regardless, it is a pretty logo, interesting and gives off a happy warm feeling - like a nice soothing beverage to refresh and relax to. In fact, HandBrake has been that way for me -...

Just curious. What's the deal with the current icon anyway? It's nice and all, but don't get the tropical cocktail thingy really in tandem with a "hand brake". I'm actually a marketing guy by nature, which explains my interest... :D @Pidda, hey nice effort actually. Good imagination. Got o...

@Hawkman. Good work. Even in its simplistic form the quality curve never reaches the 100% mark. This, in mathematics, is called an asymptote. However, discussing this in detail involves calculus, and the slope of a tangent line at a certain curve - using derivatives to test rates of change, where on...

Does this problem only occur with content from home DV movies that have already been ported to DVD? Does it also happen with regular DvDs that you encode with HandBrake as well? Just trying to pinpoint the problem. If it only happens with your DV content, tell us more about this source. As well, are...

Hey Jbrjake, Well, don't forget we just got MPEG-2 stream support -- including for HD resolutions. I can imagine a niche of people capturing 1080i ATSC broadcasts who would like to scale down to something like 480p, but keep it lossless or close-there-to. Well then of course. It's not a regular DvD ...

Complete insanity!

I cannot, for the life of me, understand this behavior. Hopefully I can end this madness that I keep reading about in this forum. If you want 100% the quality of the original DvD, then copy or play the DvD instead. Why bother? Spending mega encoding time, processor resources, etc., is only going to ...

For the sake of closure, here are my 2 pennies on the matter. Screw machines and their “specifications”. Especially when Apple is skimming the market by purposely not giving us the full specs, even for Apple TV, so we can continue to buy, and buy, the “next model”. I can't believe that even the Appl...

There is a ton of stuff for iPod conversion available now, even for file inputs as well as DvD source. If this clip is to be watched only on the iPod, RikPierce can just simply encode the "errand clip" to MPEG-4 for the quick conversion instead. Then delete after viewing if he intends on k...

The idea is simple. If you intend on encoding, and watching, this video ONLY for your portable device, it simply doesn't make sense encoding higher than 1000kbps. On a tiny screen, you don't need high bitrate for viewing quality at 1500kbps, which may be overkill. It's best to "maximize" o...

Thanks again jbrjake. I always get much out of your posts, even your few on Doom9 as well. Not sure of your time constraints, but you’d be great there too. CRF profile called "CQ-ASP-Q2" at 64%

I've been experimenting with the x264 options displayed in the HandBrake guide, and I particularly like the HB-QT compatible, version of Sharktooth's "CQ-ASP-Q2" for CRF (translated from CRF=18 and traditionally from DivX/Xvid/ASP Q=2). Slower but very nice and thank you to the HB team for...

Hello there jbrjake, HD type of rez? Ahhh, wouldn't that be sweet... :D I'd be set for years with a 6G if that were the case... I can't understand some of Apple's quirkiness. Sick of encoding multiple times...

Hello folks, For the last little while, I've been encoding my videos twice with HandBrake: 1- My "good stuff" (Main, CABAC, higher bitrates, anamorphic) 2- My iPod stuff (obviously weaker specs) I do it twice because I delete much of the source after, which comes from DvD-RWs from my DVR. ...

@Twentybelow

You're probably encoding at a low rez such as 320x240 in Baseline profile H.264 or maybe MPEG-4. Are you?

Of course that would be much faster than, say, 640x480 H.264 Main profile.
