RF is rate factor, the number below the constant quality slider where it says "RF."

Re: Sharing presets between GUI & CLI?
It's hardly specific to Unix/Mac. After reading the built in help it's trivial to construct the full set of command line options for your preset.

Re: Best settings for multiple devices
I have mostly the same problem as SicMX. I have a couple of DVDs here that I want to rip. My target devices for the encodes are iPad, iPhone 3G S and iPd Touch (same generation as the iPhone, don't know the exact name). I want to create efficient and high quality rips for all devices, so what is th...

It's nominal. 1 or 1000 would be abnormal.charvey78 wrote:I am currently getting a average of around 10fps. Is this normal?

Re: Another one of "these" posts (settings multi-device)
I have the same "problem" with my concatenated vob rips, but it's not an issue for playback in VLC. Have you tried ffmpeg with vcodec copy and acodec copy to fix the timestamps? Your settings are really slow, including a few options bordering on comical (ref 10, merange 32). With plenty of...

I'm completely oblivious, but chapter markers may require similar treatment in p2p encoding.

I also tried the nightly, and it worked, but about half of the screen was only green. I think that's why we call it "nightly". Green is a good hint it's still encrypted. I don't know what [censored] you have to go through to decrypt protected DVR-MS files, but AFAIK it's possible. I just ...

Why'd you fart around for 2 hours instead of Googling for 20 seconds?

It sounds like your acquaintance doesn't know a whole lot... HandBrake is not a good way to get to an editing environment.

Yes, that's the point of decomb. Check for combing, only deinterlace or blend if you find it.

[Pending] Expected frames calculated incorrectly -start-at
If you only specify a --start-at and not a --stop-at, the expected number of frames is the entire video rather than the portion encoded. This also messes up the progress indicator/ETA. Re: Share my setting, VERY FAST
@mduell in fact, with all 30 DVDs i have already encoded by now, i've only seen one of those that need to be decombine? Isn't it better to set decomb/detelecine to off if it not necessary, because it blured the result somehow. No, it's better to default them on. They won't do anything if the frame ...

Re: Speeding Up HD encodes
Since your playback device is a computer, it's pretty easy to add storage. Why bother with reencoding at all to save a dollar (literally) in disk space?
Instead of a $1200 dedicated encoding box, how about $225 on a pair of 2TB drives? About 70 movies fit on each.

Is that DVR-MS file protected/encrypted?
If so you need to decrypt it first.
If not try the nightly.

That's great and fast, but DVDs are interlaced and often telecined so you really want decomb/detelecine on for a decent result.

Re: Highest Quality DVD Preset For ~1GB File Sizes?
It's all about the source. You'll never match their results starting from a DVD because the quality has already been lost. Non-commercial videos like a wedding or older content like robotech are even worse to start with. Whatever result you get from the High Profile preset at RF 19 is about the best...

CRF is a rough measure of constant quality... the actual quality that comes out in the end is objectively measured in SSIM/PSNR.
