So that's 3 people who with their first post have advertised other products. Is it just me or is that really suspicious?

Besides, HandBrake is by fair the easiest app of this type I've ever used.

Yeah, it's weird. QT does a similar thing with timed text tracks - it needs a .3gp extension to be able to see them.

The output file needs to be named with .m4v for iTunes to recognise the chapter marks, I believe. That certainly used to be the case, I'm happy to be corrected.

Expanding on the workaround with QT Pro that was suggested earlier -

There's absolutely no need to save as .mov and put it through any other app. Just chop it up as needed and export to .mp4, setting both video and audio to "passthrough". Still a pain, but slightly less of a pain.

If you're not so worried about file size, you're better with constant quality - probably 70% or more. That will adapt the bitrate according to how grubby the source movie is to provide similar quality output across each movie you encode. Also, it only takes one pass, so it's quicker. Downside is you...

Multiple audio tracks are great, QT supports them just fine. And like was mentioned - hurrah for the CLI.

Only for NTSC, I presume? My PAL DVDs all encode at 25fps, which I can only assume is right/best.

Ok, glad to see you've investigated a bit. But, umm. You can't have used ffmpeg for encoding h.264. You must have made a mistake there I'm afraid. Also, you should never set the deinterlacing to on unless you know for a fact that it's interlaced (such as many TV shows). I should have thought that Pi...

A bit more detail on your settings might help. For instance, H.264 main profile or iPod profile? [edit] I assume you mean iPod profile by "basic". Also - what was the resulting bitrate in the file? [edit] Not many of us have ATVs you know. It may be that an iPod-incompatible file is flagge...

In the end, go with the quickest, easiest setup that your eyes can accept. So long as you're satisfying yourself, who the hell cares? Personally, I've recently fallen into the "greater resolution beats everything" camp. That's the best way to get extra clarity from your videos. This conver...

"MediaFork" was a temporary name, next release reverts to the old one. Try again, sometimes these things just happen. You should get a much faster conversion rate. Also, 300kbps sounds pretty low even for a 320x240 sized iPod file. You might want to test those settings on a short clip befo...

Well, Elgato have apparently said that it'll be compatible with "any application that uses QuickTime export" or some such. It could be poor reporting but that sounds like it's some type of QT component? Sort of cool, but if I can't get chapter marks, anamorphic encoding, 5.1AAC... then I'm...

OK, but I don't see the advantage of this. Surely a single CRF pass encode would be much quicker and simpler? And if it's not improving the quality, and not reducing the file size, what is the point? The theory is, the constant quality pass gives some idea of how good the source material is - and w...

H.264 won't sync with larger than 640 width, but (in my setup at least), 720x400 in mp4 will. I'll have to re-read the thread on macroblocks and figure out how to calculate the limits you've posted. MPEG4 - Macroblocks, unless a recent version of iTunes has changed it. No more than the equivalent of 480x480, whatever that works out at. H.264 - Must fit in 640x480 resolution. That's a limit imposed by iTunes though - the iPod's capabilities appear to be macroblock-based like with MPEG4, but you ...
