Passthrough will always be better than a lossy encode.

Re: Any option to estimate file size after conversion?
HB will not estimate file size.
If you use a fixed bit rate there are online calculators. If you use a variable bitrate my personal rule is that once your encode gets to about 25% then you can look at the file size and multiply by 4 to get you in the ballpark.

If you don’t crop your encode they should be ok.

Handbrake is a video converter. If you just want to copy some files from a CD you should just use windows.

Try just copying your blu ray to your hard drive. This will let you know if the disc is damaged.

Re: Can't process dvd files
Makemkv is a ripper, Handbrake is a video converter.
While it is a common misconception that they do the same thing they actually don’t.
The recommended way to convert a DVD is to rip the DVD to your hard drive using makemkv, or similar, then convert with Handbrake if needed.

Re: handbrake processes partial track
If makemkv can only read the first 20 minutes then there is probably an issue with the disc. Make sure it is clean and not scratched.
In your log the handbrake encode completed successfully.

Re: Can't process dvd files
If it’s only one disc that won’t work I would lean towards it being an issue with the disc itself, either scratches/dirty or some dodgy authoring.
If makemkv works use it.

You should really try using a dedicated ripper like makemkv rather than handbrake.
