Re: NLMeans denoise filter
Current Nightly Builds and the upcoming HandBrake 1.1.0 release include two new sharpening filters. Some light sharpening can be useful following denoising, or when working with a smooth/blurry/out-of-focus picture. Be careful, as too much sharpening can increase output file size. Enjoy, everyone.

Re: Best settings for auto-crop *only* on MKV files?
Super HQ 480p30 (or the 576p25 one for PAL region). Higher quality video would likely be larger than the DVD. Start there and change to MKV (or start with one of the Matroska presets). Review the audio/subtitles defaults to make sure they will select the languages and passthru/convert to formats you...

Thanks for double checking that for me. I'll try to reproduce (and hopefully resolve) the issue over the weekend.

At the bottom of the Credits article, part of the HandBrake documentation, we have listed two worthy alternatives if you are so inclined: https://handbrake.fr/docs/credits.html
The [Removed Dubious Product Reference] thing is surely an annoyance, but I've not had much luck sorting it with Google.

Re: subtitles not showing up
You will need to delete the following files/folders, which is where HandBrake stores its configuration data (common for Mac apps): /Users/you/Library/Application Support/HandBrake /Users/you/Library/Preferences/fr.handbrake.HandBrake.plist Open a Finder window (e.g. your home folder), and from the m...

Re: Progress printed on different lines
Okay, thanks for checking that. This is the commit I'm concerned about: https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/commit/7c438ad5ae81c31c660fc9a208dacd7177f54a24 Is there any chance you can build the commit before that on master branch and see if that solves the problem? If so, I'll need to investigate...

Re: subtitles issue
No worries. You probably want to investigate the Configure Defaults sheet. Within are the rules for subtitle selection. For instance, you can choose to select the first subtitle of any language and always burn it in (or whatever). These settings are what get used for batch encoding with the queue an...

Paste an activity log from the burned-in subs encode and we'll tell you. You might also want to try the current nightly build. Can my settings be wrong?
Sorry you're having such a hard time. Worst case, if you can provide a source sample we can try to reproduce the issue.

We recently made a change to how piped output is created, but it shouldn't affect usage in a terminal window. Are you only seeing this in a piped .log file, or in the terminal itself?

Can you provide a small sample, ideally 25 MB or less, that exhibits the issue? Use dropbox or similar and share a link, and we'll take a deeper look.

Re: HEVC/h.265 encodes not playable on macOS 10.13 High Sierra
Great, glad you got it working.
Sadly, we had no way of knowing how Apple would handle HEVC/H.265 until just now with the High Sierra developer beta.
Subler for macOS can remux your video without re-encoding. No doubt it will be updated soon, if it hasn't already been, to handle this issue.

Re: subtitles not showing up
Indeed, most Apple software and devices do not support VOBSUB "soft" subs (the kind you can turn on and off while watching) in MP4. You will likely want to select the burn in option to make the text permanently part of the video, or use another player like VLC, as Woodstock suggests.

What playback device/software are you using? If it works with MKV (instead of MP4), we have a fix coming for that.

You probably want to configure the subtitle defaults to select the first or all tracks matching English or French (since that's what's available in your source).

I should probably recommend "keyint=30:bframes=0" since B-frames serve no useful purpose for an intermediate and can slow down decoding.

Deinterlace 29.97fps to 59.94fps at better quality than Vegas/Yadif This is what HandBrake's Decomb interlacer with the Bob preset does. Scale anamorphic 1440x1080 to 1920x1080 at better quality than Vegas (but note that the difference in quality here would be miniscule for that operation) Currentl...

When you're done chilling, perhaps consider using the command line version of HandBrake. It does not limit upscaling, but of course you'll need to come up with the magic sauce of commands to get everything you want. We can probably help.

Apologies, I didn't realize we scrubbed the old versions, too. I guess that makes sense.
@JustMom If you want, send me a private message on the forum here (click on my name and then Send Private Message). I'll try to walk you through what you need to do.

When we overhaul the resolution settings and picture tab, this will be possible. Unfortunately, it is not currently. The jumping you're seeing is an unfortunate anomaly that we'll look into.
