Re: AC3 5.1 Sound Issues
Just want to make sure I understand the current state of things... Should I use The DTS-HD track or the DTS track (I assume this is the core) when converting bluray audio to AC3 (@640kbps)? Based on what I've read in this thread, Im thinking the DTS core is "safer".

Re: 1920x1080 to 1080x720
As long as it is cropping correctly (i.e. the 40 pixels are black bars), I'd suggest leaving it set to automatic. No reason to waste bits encoding a black bar.

Re: Which Audio-Track to choose on BD?
You pretty much nailed it. Though if the BD has a TrueHD track, this should be used for the 2-channel downmix. In order to have access to TrueHD tracks, you'll need the nightly build (see the announcement at the top of every subforum). The nightly will also let you select DTS-HD tracks, but there's...

Re: Audio bitrate advice for A4 devices
If it were me, I would encode the stereo PCM track using CoreAudio AAC at 320kbps (for iPhone/iPad playback). Further, I would convert the DTS track to AC3 at 640kbps (for AppleTV playback). I'm not too concerned with file size, and keeping as much of the audio quality as possible is a high priority...

The appletv2 preset uses advanced x264 features that are not compatible with the appletv1.

Currently, you cannot put a DTS soundtrack in the MP4 container. 640kbps AC3 is the best you're going to do.

Re: What does "AC3 pass through" with "DTS"?
So this is a bug!? There should be no "AC3 Passthrough" for DTS-Streams... Not sure if I'd classify it as a bug. I believe it is this way to accommodate presets -- i.e. you can use the same preset regardless of if the source has an AC3 or DTS soundtrack. Since your source only has a DTS s...

Re: What does "AC3 pass through" with "DTS"?
The only way you can get an AC3 soundtrack from a DTS input is to re-encode. As of .9.5, Handbrake has the ability to do this; it is a key feature for those of us who encode HD sources like HDDVD and Bluray for platforms that do not support DTS (like the AppleTV).

Re: Apple TV / Itunes HD Icon
I believe the HD tag needs to be explicitly set now (this wasn't always the case). Subler on the Mac can do this, I think MetaX for Windows can as well.

Re: Just a General Question About Handbrake and Blu-Ray Enco
An uncompressed BD movie is typically 20-40GB, but can be larger. The entire disc is 50GB. The duration to rip depends on your drive, but is typically 40min to 1hr for an unmodified drive. BD drives are all RipLock'ed. There are firmware hacks that can remove this and get ripping time down to aroun...

Re: Large Blocking
I should note that I did not feed the BR structure directly into Handbrake, I extracted the streams via eac3to (converting to AC3 at the same time) and remuxed with tsMuxer before feeding the m2ts into Handbrake. That probably doesn't matter. The bug is in the H.264 decoder, not in the demuxer (Han...

Re: Interlaced frames/fields support is not implemented
I have one disc (a concert Bluray from Nine Inch Nails) that is interlaced VC-1... does anyone know a free way to get this into a format that Handbrake will accept? I'm on a Mac, but a Windows solution would be acceptable too; I don't want to buy Flip4Mac Pro to use it once for this.

Re: Encoding for A4 devices (iPad, iPhone 4, tv 2)
Thanks Rodeo. Is there a good reason for choosing modulus 2 over anamorphic strict or vice versa? Also, what setting would you recommend for HD sources? I use custom anamorphic, 1280x720 mod 2, for my encodes from HD-DVD and Bluray sources. Doesn't really help improve output on the AppleTV, but doe...

Re: Foreign Language Audio Track not available on Apple TV
I have used Handbrake for years with excellent results. Whenever possible I include the Spanish track in the rip. I use either the Universal or Apple TV presets, selecting Track 1 as English (AC3) (5.1ch), AAC (Core Audio) and Track 2 Espanol (AC3) (5.1 ch) and AC3 Passthru. Those setting may not h...
