Re: Support for bigger width than source width in non-anamor
I'd like to second that request that it just be left as-is. It's been like that in the Windows GUI for as long as I've been using Handbrake, so that's a couple of years now. I suspect it's probably been like that for as long as there's been a Windows GUI. If this is the first you're hearing about it...

Re: Support for bigger width than source width in non-anamor
You can already do this in the Windows GUI. Instead of adjusting the width value you simply increase the height value to its maximum, which indirectly forces the width value to scale up accordingly. If you then try to adjust the height value directly it'll automatically get knocked back down to 720,...

Re: Noobie VHS capture to mp4
On the video tab click the codec drop-down menu and select MPEG-4 (FFmpeg), that should be compatible with anything that would play Xvid. Also, I find it unlikely that a blu-ray player can't play H.264 mp4 at all, half the blu-ray discs out there are encoded with H.264 albeit with limitations on som...

Re: Deinterlace to double frame rate?
Is there any method in Handbrake to encode to interlaced video? Set decomb/deinterlace to 'off' then in the 'Extra Options' text box on the Video tab insert either tff=1 or bff=1 (depending on whether your clip is interlaced as Top Field First or Bottom Field First). I was actually doing a lot of t...

Re: Handbrake stops encoding on one of two computers
Probably goes without saying, but if its been a while then a thorough cleaning inside the box might help. I just de-dusted the fan and fins on my heatsink the other day for the first time in a few months and my CPU temperatures dropped ~15c at full load. Now that's an extreme case (I've got a LOT of...

I believe this has already been addressed in the nightly builds. Just go download and install a recent nightly and see if that works out for you.

Re: A differnt kind of target filesize. (NOT OLD WAY!!)
I think you'd get the same quality and have it done a lot quicker if you simply calculate the average bitrate you'll need for your video to get it to 4GB and use the 2-pass encoding already in place.

Re: Cutting files converted with Handbrake using anamorphic
But that'll still require a re-encode. Handbrake doesn't have video-passthrough so any video you feed it will be re-encoded, which pf_moore says he doesn't want to do. He could pull out his original and do a fresh encode of just the short clip he wants, but what he asked for was if he could cut a cl...

Re: Editing PVR Content Prior to Converting in HB
You might try AVIDemux . You'll only be able to make cuts on keyframes when in copy mode (it'll pop up a little warning when you go to save it if you've made any cuts that aren't on keyframes), but a second or two of the start and end of each commercial break is better than the couple of minutes of ...

Re: Pal Speedup and Pal Speeddown
Yes, that's exactly what he means. I've got a few NTSC DVDs that exhibit the same issue, content that was originally filmed at progressive 25fps that for NTSC release (both on broadcast and on disc) was simply slowed down to film standard 24fps and then telecined as if it were film, all without pitc...
Re: Babylon 5
I didn't get very far on that attempt, not enough hard drive space to spare plus a slow CPU pretty much demanded I hold off a bit. Still don't have enough spare hard drive space to justify long-term archival rips of everything I'd like.

Re: Converting previously compressed videos
OK, if remuxing isn't an option then I would strongly suggest you forego recompressing your current rips and just step up your plans to re-rip from the original discs. You did say in the first post that that was your long-term plan anyway, and while remuxing would have been a viable stopgap solution...

Re: 6 core or 8 core cpu?
I'm on an 8350 right now and I find that if the only filters I'm using are detelecine and decomb then it's pretty easy to max out all 8 cores (unless I'm using some really low quality settings say 'ultrafast' or the like just trying for 400FPS encoding speeds or something... not something I'd bother...

Re: Converting previously compressed videos
As mduell suggested you need a tool to remux to a different container, something handbrake doesn't do. I usually use either YAMB (a decent little GUI for the open source command-line program MP4Box, except it hasn't been updated in a years and you need to manually update the version of MP4Box.exe it...

Re: Advise for DVD Encoding
I'd start out by ignoring the online guides that are probably long out of date and instead just start with the Normal preset. Install the latest nightly build if you haven't already (remember to reset the built-in presets after upgrading) and just try encoding something in Normal. No tweaks or chang...

Re: Black on sides only - no full or letterbox view
Your player might not be respecting the aspect ratio data in the bitstream. Some very stupid players just don't know how, and a video player app built into a TV might just be that stupid. You might try simply setting the anamorphic mode to 'none' forcing Handbrake to resize and encode with square pi...

Re: Need to convert Handbreak MKV's to M4V's
Oh I'm sorry, I guess I wan't clear. Avidemux should work with the video and audio but NOT the subtitles, hence why I went on to mention YAMB as an alternative that I believe should work with your subs.

Re: Need to convert Handbreak MKV's to M4V's
You can easily copy the video and audio streams from an MKV into an M4V container losslessly with one of many tools out there. Avidemux will work beautifully for remuxing the audio and video from an MKV to M4V container without transcoding: simply load up your MKV file, set the output container to M...

Re: Encoding quality PC vs Mac
What the Mac version does have is a better AAC encoder. Everything else is exactly the same. Just a quick question on a related note (did a few searchs via the forum search box that turned up nothing, sorry if I didn't dig deep enough), is there a technical or legal reason that no one's ever patche...

Re: Why do Blu-Ray movies have such high bitrate
Well Handbrake uses the x264 open source encoder, and I know of at least one studio that uses that same encoder (The Criterion Collection actually funded x264's certification as a blu-ray compliant encoder so that they could then use it on their own releases). Studios encode to such a high bitrate b...

Re: Handbrake for professional use
The only thing I can think of is if the MPEG-LA (the group that handles patent licencing for the h.264 codec) comes knocking if you get big enough to find your way onto their radar. If you're downloading Handbrake for free then you clearly didn't pay up for the appropriate patent licences when you g...

Re: Is the default surround template just stereo
Dolby Pro-Logic will downmix your surround sound input into a stereo signal but also insert data into the audio in such a way that's inaudible to the listener if listening through standard stereo output (headphones, 2.0 speaker setups) but a Pro-Logic decoder between your sound source and you're sp...

Re: Can I switch "containers" after encoding?
Handbrake isn't designed for that sort of task. That's not to say you can't do what you're asking, you'll just need a different tool. Avidemux should be perfect for what you're asking: just load up your file in it, leave the video and audio options to the default 'copy' mode and just change the 'for...
