I've never seen a movie from iTunes that was 480x anything...

Use the iPod preset if you want somethign that will playback on the iPhone-HQ and decently on an iPod/AppleTV. Otherwise use the iPhone preset and be done with it.

Doesn't get much simpler than that.

If I were going to do this, I would probably just use the built-in 'Convert to iPhone/iPod' functionality in iTunes.

Simple, if the source is interlaced, enable deinterlacing. Otherwise, leave it disabled. There is quite a bit about this in the documentation.

Also, if the last general release was any indication, you'll see stories about the release on Digg, practically every Mac blog out there, and they'll be talking about it in podcasts. I'm sure you'll see the announcement somewhere!

My 720x encodes @ 1500 with 160kbps audio all play fine on my iPhone.

Change the extension to .m4v.

As far as I can see the above option pretty much needs QuickTime only to implement (after you have the AC3). I'm pretty sure the AppleTV doesn't like files larger than 4GB, not sure about the X360.

This would distort the picture. You're best bet is to encode it as you normally would, and let the TV apply one of its zoom modes. It won't be perfect, but better than stretching a 1.33:1 frame into a 1.78:1 one.

Is there more than one title on the disc? This is how the majority of the TV show DVDs I've encoded are done, and you have to encode each title separately...

Hmm... I'm using the Mac version (and usually just use the command line interface); it is under the picture settings button off of the main page. I don't have any experience with the Windows version, so hopefully someone else can chime in.

Yes, they are generally over 1GB each (typically 1-1.5GB). If I were going to minimize the file size for iphone, I would drop the bitrate to around 1000, and set the width to be 480 while ensuring "keep aspect ratio" is checked. This should allow you to zoom in on movies whenever you want ...

That's odd... I havent had any issues with my HB encodes not allowing me to fully zoom in if double-tapped, although I'm sure we're using a number of different settings.

Isn't this basically doing what the iphone does when you double-tap on the video, except you are forcing it by cropping the edges off?
