Re: Trouble with subtitles

Hi, I'm not a Mac user, but from what I've picked up about Mac software it sounds like Subler might be the right tool. A quick look at the features page indicates that Subler should be able to mux your subtitles with the mp4 file you got from HB. It's not really a "fix" for your original p...

Re: General Encoding question about file size

The amount of film grain in the source is often what causes this. My guess is that if you look at Singing in the Rain and compare it to the Avengers you will find that the first has a lot more film grain than the later. Film grain is very bitrate intensive as it's unique for each frame and thus can'...

Re: "stop-at" written incorrectly to batch script & export q

Hi zeddy! I don't claim to be a HB guru, but I've used the CLI some... Regarding the units used for start-at and stop-at I've used frame: and duration:. I see no reason why pts: shouldn't work though I've yet to use it, but I can't remember seeing anything about seconds: in the documentation. And ye...

Re: Video Orientation is 90 degrees right

BarLuShKi, My guess is that the iPhone set a orientation tag and that HB currently doesn't support that particular tag. But that's just my uneducated guess... However you may be able to do something about it if you are ready to do a bit of typing as HB CLI does support rotating the video. There are ...

Re: subtitles and wmp

As phibertron wrote support for subtitles in WMP is dependent on windows version. As default it's actually non existent as far as I know. There are several ways you can try. First I'd suggest you try installing the individual packages needed and see if that solves your problem. To do that you will h...

Re: Converting DVD without quality loss

Thank you for the information. That was very interesting, and not some thing I've heard about before. The one time I've had a reason to try Huffyuv where it would have been critical that it was lossless the encoding failed miserably with the output not in anyway resembling the input. In the end it d...

Re: how to recode a video without any risk of lose quality ?

Short answer: You can't! Slightly longer answer: See this thread about why you can't: https://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=25274 Longest answer I'll type up today about this: So you've read the thread above and see some thing about lossless x264. Ok, go ahead and try it, just make sur...

Re: very large mkv output

Going from 1080p to 720p drops the raw pixels by about 55%, so the file size should shrink by about the same amount, audio and subtitle tracks not included... [Edit] I had typed up a long answer, and my browser ate it... Oh well... You could try using the utility the jamielaw posted about here: http...

Re: very large mkv output

Usually advice for this kind of question looks something like this: Try RF 22 - 24 and/or a weak denoise filter As I'm a fan of film grain I'd suggest you try the higher RF first, but it's very possible that you will end up having to use the denoise filter to meet your target filesize. The resize op...

Re: Converting DVD without quality loss

Thank you musicvid. There is a bit of ambiguation of the word "lossless", however. Some "technically lossless" compressed codecs, including the venerable QT Animation and Huffyuv are not quite so compared to uncompressed, depending on the number of rounding errors in the compress...

Re: Converting DVD without quality loss

I'll just jump in with one more, and by now hopefully redundant answer... When talking about compression there are two fundamentally different ways to do it. One is called lossless compression and the other is called lossy compression. Anything compressed using a lossless compression algorithm will,...

However, I didn't hear any difference compared to 160kbps. Perhaps because I mostly only encoced older movies (60s/70s) and usually watch on my laptop with external speakers or headphones. But even with headphones I don't really hear something annoying or 'bad sound'. I think you answered yourself ...

First of all I have to say that this is not *the solution*. It's just the first things that I thought of, and the moment I post it someone is probably going to drop a link to a much simpler and faster solution... I see two ways to attack this. Either you demux the audio from the original and modify ...

It's true that flash based SSD's has limited write endurance, but I doubt that using one for DVD or BluRay ripping will put much strain on a modern SSD, unless you're going to do tens of thousands of rips that is. Re: Most Important Component When Ripping?

Raw CPU performance is good. Go for a i5, i7, or a AMD FX8000 series CPU. Having a lot of cores do help when using HB, at least when encoding h.264 as x264 is now quite good at multi threading. A high clock speed also helps, but it can also get very expensive. Memory should be as fast as possible, b...

There has been a known bug where FreeNAS would have problems handling the transfer of large files when using SMB/CIFS which is the default protocol used by Windows. In my experience it's intermittent and usually I've failed to trigger it on demand, but occasionally I've had a file transfer fail. It ...

Lots of possibilities here... As Flo wrote temperature controlled fans that spin up is a possibility, but it could be coil whine or even a temperature warning triggered by a BIOS setting. You can open up the computer and try to locate the sound. If it sounds mechanical you can try stopping the fans ...
