Re: Deinterlace / Detelecine (Automation)
Well the 2 have different goals. A basic Bob will just take one field make frame 1 and take field 2 and make field 2 which leads to a flickery mess. If you don’t use a Bob, you throw away half of the Fields (and half your temporal resolution ) lead into a 30 frames per second output. The deinterlace...

Re: Deinterlace / Detelecine (Automation)
I’m no expert, just understand this stuff. I recommend you use a proper setting for the source that you are converting. Even if you have to make multiple presets for yourself.

Re: Deinterlace / Detelecine (Automation)
For your first question, handbrake, as far as I know and from using for years, does not even read if a sources meta data, And treats every source as a progressive input. I have noticed false positives when there’s a bunch of it lines like powerlines or horizontal shades on a window in the background...

Re: Deinterlace / Detelecine (Automation)
With the above settings, it’s automatic and a catch all, but handbrake should only deinterlace frames that need it. But it can falsely detect interlacing sometimes. There is no perfect way to do this. Also I recommend doing a bob deinterlace with frame rate set to same as source. That will retrieve ...

Re: Changing file containers
It’s cool. I know this can be confusing. Formats are basically the raw data streams. Like mp3, aac, ect. For audio formats. Or h.264, h.265, mpeg2, vc1, vp9, ect are video formats. A container is a way to format the audio and video and possible other streams like subtitles, and put them into a “box”...

Re: Changing file containers
H.264 and h.265 are 2 different video compression formats. One cannot be converted to the other losslessly. A container would be like a MKV or .mov or .mp4, avi. Those are not video formats, but you can put whatever you want into them. As long as they meet spec of said container. MKV is the most uni...

To top this off, I’ve experienced this bug with pro logic down mixer years ago. It just appeared one day after an update so I’ve Been using stereo down mix only ever since.

Re: HandBrake stops the rip at Chapter 4
Looks there are some errors on the dvd authoring. Try making a mkv rip with makemkv and encode that. It’s pretty good at fixing up poorly mastered, even if not encrypted, dvds

Re: Flickering lines in cartoons after mkv to m4v conversion
Not to derail this thread too much, but most information on the internet is wrong about anything regarding interlaced video (which relates to telecine). So much so that chat GPT cant even answer questions properly about it.

Re: How to prevent echoing in audio in video?
Does the echo exist on the original tape or capture? Because if the original was filmed in a church, it might just be the natural reverb of the environment? I don’t know. First thing I thought of.

Re: What is Google Photos High Quality equivalent settings?
If I’m understanding correctly, you were talking about googles photos “high quality” setting, which is now called “SpaceSaver” right? If so, currently, Google is using VP9 format. We don’t know what settings they are using. I do know, that I can see, from personal experience, is that they are using ...

Shutter encoder can do this. Handbrake always has to reencode.

opinion on deinterlace method
This is just a post to get peoples opinion on what they think is the best deinterlacer in handbrake. To take 30i into in 60P. mainly 480i footage. There is no correct answer, nor is this a support request. just wanted to see what people think and maybe learn why i'm seeing what i'm seeing. I've used...

Re: What is Google Photos High Quality equivalent settings?
Well an issue here too is google has, since January, stored space saving videos as Vp9, and no longer h.264. I have found that when you re-download, at least on an iPhone, that it gets converted into H.264, which can change the file size again

Not at my computer, but to the right where you choose your deinterlacing type, should say decomb, there is a menu to select how. Select bob

Re: Best settings (or preset) for ripping home movies
I use the 480p preset. either the standard or the high quality one. I find the HQ one gives just a tinge more detail that you may want to keep. But encode time will take longer. If the footage was from VHS, high 8, DV, or any other interlaced source, you may want to turn on bob deinterlacing and cha...

Re: Smaller Size, Same Quality
Try the HQ setting. It will be a minor loss of quality (if even that noticeable) and usually gives smaller sizes. But your mileage may vary and no guarantee of a significant smaller file size.

Also set your frame rate to “same as source” or “50” or higher or the bob deinterlace will not work with the defaults

Re: Convert HDR to SDR
HandBrake's HDR to SDR conversion is not particularly "state of the art" either, but better workflows can be significantly more complex to set up (to the point where I won't bother with the latter, personally). Pick your poison. You're right, apples own generic profile does a better job r...

Re: Convert HDR to SDR
You are going to lose some bit of color fidelity when converting to SDR, and depending on how handbrake is mapping the HDR to SDR, some details in the shadows and highlights may lose some detail. There is no perfect way to do this and most apps and devices just use a generic conversion profile. Any ...

Re: Convert HDR to SDR
Rec709 is SDR. Re2020 is HDR. I don’t know what the menus look like (not at my computer). But use that I got to select the right choice. May I ask are there any ways to make it brighter ? Anything else besides the given colorspaces ? Define brighter. SDR only has 100 nits of dynamic range. It's up ...
