Re: Output size is different to input size
Not to hijack this thread, but I'm also just learning Handbrake and at this minute I'm converting a VTS*.VOB file to a m4v using the Constant Quality setting of "20" (60.78%). Anyway, on the lower left I see Picture Size: Source: 720 X 480, Output: 720 X 304. Am I losing 180 pixels in hei...

Re: Artifacts on Right Side of Video
Yes. It's just junk, I think most of the time it just mirrors the couple of pixels on the edge of the real frame so that it doesn't look out of place if the overscan is actually displayed.

Re: Artifacts on Right Side of Video
Are you sure that this is actually not just overscan information in the source material? I doubt it's being introduced by handbrake, so my guess is that it's in the source and is likely from overscan.

Sounds like a damaged DVD and/or bad encoding. Someone with more expertise can weigh in, but I don't think it would be possible to get beyond that.

Have you tried cropping 2 pixels from each side?

Re: Container confusion
Essentially, yes. Some players are compatible with only certain containers (Apple devices require m4v) and some players handle certain containers better. And as you mentioned, MKV can usually deal with more options than MP4 (I'm pretty sure DTS pass through is one of those features).

Re: 3 Stooges
It does have the separate titles in the Title drop down menu. The window to the right just says 1 through 1 with no option to make it 1 through 5. Do I have to convert each one separately or is there a setting that will do all of them at one time? Yes, you will have to encode each title separately....

Re: Need basic help on ripping, saving, etc
God, I'm glad I seen this thread. I'm in the exact same position, only I've followed what everyone has suggested here and I'm going nowhere. I still need to "Get VLC". I'm going insane. Has anyone got any more suggestions? I don't mean to be insensitive, but you must be doing something wr...

i got a similar problem to then with the move Batman Begins, it got to 100%, but it did not stop and the file size was over 24GB. i used the High Profile Preset mp4 file. i am using 0.9.5. next time i encode it, i will copy the log. Encode logs are stored to disc, instructions for finding them can ...

Re: v 0.9.5 - Error Reading NAV packet - Non commercial DVD
I'm assuming the DVD plays fine on a standalone player / in a DVD app?
If so, try disabling "libdvdnav" in the preferences window. You'll need to restart Handbrake for it to take effect. Does that allow the encode to succeed?

PPC support was abandoned in 0.9.5, that's correct.

Re: No audio in Windows Media Player since upgrading to 0.9.
True! The question then becomes, do the Handbrake developers expect Handbrake to work with WMP on Windows 7 or not? If the answer is yes, then the fact that it plays in VLC is informative but doesn't mean the encode worked as expected :) I think the developers expect handbrake to work with players ...

But the opposite situation would be fine—videos encoded for the ATV1 will play flawlessly on the ATV2.

Could you post an activity log from one of the failed attempts? They're all stored to disk and are located in ~/Library/Application Support/Handbrake/EncodeLogs. Might give us a clue as to what's causing the problem.

Re: New HB with 1st Gen Apple TV Issue
Got it! Thanks! It sounds to me like it's best to rip with MTR or RipIt, and then convert that, as most of the movies that I've encountered have the 99 title thing as part of their copy protection. RipIt works, except when it doesn't. I use it myself and I'll occasionally get a rip that handbrake j...

Re: Preset Definitions
Thanks, that makes perfect sense, and is exactly what I assumed. However, it also sounds like I'd have to make a 2nd encoding if I wanted the movie to play on an iPod, right? If you didn't want to make the compromises necessary to make a universally encoded file, then yeah unfortunately. The iPods ...

Re: New HB with 1st Gen Apple TV Issue
Am I correct in my assumption that using the HB with VLC, correctly chooses the appropriate title, just as if one pressed the "Play" button from the DVD menu? No... at least not all the time. IIRC, the GUI will pick what it thinks is the correct title and is right more often than not. It'...

Re: Preset Definitions
If you leave out the iPods, the AppleTV is the weakest device in that bunch. You'd be safe encoding with the "AppleTV" preset included in 0.9.5. If you take out the ATV or you upgrade to the 2nd generation ATV, then you could use the "AppleTV 2" preset which would be a bit bette...
