I've never seen a movie from iTunes that was 480x anything...

Use the iPod preset if you want somethign that will playback on the iPhone-HQ and decently on an iPod/AppleTV. Otherwise use the iPhone preset and be done with it.

Doesn't get much simpler than that.

I already posted this in the IRC channel, but figured I'd add my comments here for completeness... I've experienced static in the audio on a variety of audio and video files, all of which were not created with Handbrake and were at a variety of audio bitrates ranging from 64kbps mono (podcast) to 25...

Yeah, it would be, but depending on how often you do it, it could be worth a shot. I thought about this for quite awhile, and in the end decided to just make all of my rips compatible with both iPhone and AppleTV. The quality definitely suffers when watching via the AppleTV, but it is still decent. ...

If I were going to do this, I would probably just use the built-in 'Convert to iPhone/iPod' functionality in iTunes.

Simple, if the source is interlaced, enable deinterlacing. Otherwise, leave it disabled. There is quite a bit about this in the documentation.

Also, if the last general release was any indication, you'll see stories about the release on Digg, practically every Mac blog out there, and they'll be talking about it in podcasts. I'm sure you'll see the announcement somewhere! :D

As far as I can see the above option pretty much needs QuickTime only to implement (after you have the AC3). Therefore it would seem quite possible for HandBrake to be upgraded to offer this as a built in option. And you are basing this assessment on what, exactly? How do you propose a cross-platfo...

Sure, follow the steps here: http://handbrake.m0k.org/trac/wiki/CompileGuide

The developers don't really want SVN builds posted or distributed.

As wonderful as the application is, nevertheless, in reading the HB guide, and according to your last post on Doom9, HB had still some room for improvement in the deinterlacing department.
And that's exactly what these latest updates have addressed! :D

I'm pretty sure the AppleTV doesn't like files larger than 4GB, not sure about the X360.

This would distort the picture. You're best bet is to encode it as you normally would, and let the TV apply one of its zoom modes. It won't be perfect, but better than stretching a 1.33:1 frame into a 1.78:1 one.

Yes, they are generally over 1GB each (typically 1-1.5GB). If I were going to minimize the file size for iphone, I would drop the bitrate to around 1000, and set the width to be 480 while ensuring "keep aspect ratio" is checked. This should allow you to zoom in on movies whenever you want on the iph...

Isn't this basically doing what the iphone does when you double-tap on the video, except you are forcing it by cropping the edges off?
