Re: AppleTV Advanced Settings (Post PsyRDO)
Thanks for the response. The 65% encode was to essentially solidify in my own mind that probably everyone already knows (as you pointed out) that going beyond 62% yields very meager improvements at the cost of file size. :) As to seeing the difference, I would say "yes." With the sample en...

Re: AppleTV Advanced Settings (Post PsyRDO)
Well, Houston, I appear to have a problem. :( I did several encodes with one of my preferred reference shots, "The Fifth Element" (SuperBit) on a close-up with a fair amount of detail. My comments at the bottom. DVD Source http://idisk.mac.com/mappin-Public/FE%20DVD.png Cav/Dynaflash Setti...

Re: How-To: Automate DVD Backup w/ FairMount & HandBrake
Fantastic tutorial! Thank you for spending the time to put it together. That said, the HandBrakeCLI doesn't work for me. Same thing as above, instant notification but the script never appears to kick off. I presume it's a file path issue. Also, don't forget to include the slash at the end of your la...

Re: AppleTV Advanced Settings (Post PsyRDO)
After a six month (or so) sabattical of encoding I saw that 0.9.3 was released and had to try it out. Of course Cav is leading the charge still! :D I'm having to get caught back up on the encoding lingo again. Using dynaflash's settings directly above I was greatly impressed with the output on my AT...

Re: Video quality settings for @TV Take 2...
Hi all. Frustrating weekend of encoding. Just when I *thought* I had a setting I liked, ATV and Harry Potter (and Casino Royale) ruin my day. :( Here's what I was using: ref=6:subq=6:me=umh:no-fast-pskip=1:mixed-refs=1:merange=32:analyse=all:bframes=6:trellis=1:weightb=1:brdo=1:bime=1:direct=auto In...

Re: Video quality settings for @TV Take 2...
Well, I'm not sure what you're going to be able to make out of this. ATV caches content? Before the results, my setup: ATV 2.0 streaming from an HP MediaSmart server (WHS) with iTunes library over 802.11n, 5GHz N-only network off AEBS, connected to gigabit switch backbone. When streamed everything w...

Re: Video quality settings for @TV Take 2...
In theory sync vs stream could make a difference but I'm not sure it would. Do we have any evidence to support this? I guess on an 802.11g network with a poor connection but, for example, I stream from my ATV on an N-only 5GHz network with a gigabit backbone. I'd be shocked if syncing vs streaming y...

Re: Audio out of sync on 5.1
Oh, I know CR is a problem child. One person in that linked thread said they got it to rip successfully: http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?p=26840#p26840 I wonder if it actually did rip successfully or just appeared to? (And I asked as well , in said thread, too.) I moved on to other discs wit...

Re: Audio out of sync on 5.1
I found that the Dolby surround stream was in sync for me but the 5.1 was out of sync (Casino Royale). So if you play it on your PC you will likely use the Dolby surround stream (stereo) and so will look to be in sync but as soon as you play it via a 5.1 system it will use the alternative stream an...

Re: Video quality settings for @TV Take 2...
@ Cav or dynaflash: Have either of you done any "blind" quality tests? I ask because I've spent the last week fiddling with encodes and settings and on my equipment, doing pixel-by-pixel comparisons, I'm finding no difference with bframes at 6, bframes off, reference frames high, etc. It s...

You're going to want to take a look at the Devices forum where this conversation is already happening.

Re: Presets and the Devs plan
I wouldn't hold off, expecting any great new, "super" preset. The reality is that the default ATV preset, on a quality setting of your choice, is probably going to be good enough. You have to be a hard-core videophile or want to eek out every last bit of detail for those standard settings ...

Re: READ ME / POST HERE if a specific DVD/Movie won't rip
After the next release, we may need to scrub the list and start anew. Maybe with a little more specifics on what "won't rip" really means. Not sure how akilez got CR to rip without any problems; just tried it myself and chapter one is messed up with a bad audio sync in the pre-credits. St...

Heh. I stream from a 2TB NAS with fault-tolerance. The only way to fly! :) Can you describe your setup? I don't want to stream from my Mac because I don't want to have it running all the time. A NAS is another issue though... Sure. I picked up an HP MediaSmart Server. It's basically a nice 4-drive ...

Trust me, I am sure we'll find out through alot of testing in the next few days ;) < is thinking of upping bframes to somewhere in the 8 or 9 category, just for kicks > I turned up ref to 6 and had no problems on the ATV or my iPhone. Re: Video quality settings for @TV Take 2...
The past few days I've been trying a number of settings, versions of Cav's settings, dynaflash's, etc. It feels kinda silly blowing them up to 2x size and comparing the pores on an actor's face for which is better. :) And, ultimately, they're all *really* close. A few things that I've learned via my...

Is it possible that your AC-3 is only a 2 channel track? (Like an older DVD.) What did you encode and what audio options did you select?
