Re: Please Help: Encoding failing

Web optimised does nothing to reduce file size, it simply interleaves the audio and video as well as moves the index to the head of the file so you can start playback without waiting for the entire file to download. To reduce the file size I would suggest increasing RF to 22 or 23, apply a medium or...

Re: MediaInfo CFR Issue: POSSIBLE SOLUTION. Please Read.

HandBrake uses a 90 KHz clock as standard, same as MPEG... The fact that MediaInfo reports the 1 tick jitter this causes as VFR is a problem with MediaInfo rather than us. You obsessing over the output of one tool when you've been reassured that your encodes are, in fact, CFR is your issue.

Re: Incomplete transcoding

Try disabling libdvdnav in the advanced options and restart HandBrake. If that does not work, try updating to a current nightly build.

...which is why we have nightly builds. ;)

Seriously, I've been building from source or running nightly builds for years now with very few issues. Except for occasions where brand new code is being bedded in, I've found them to be as reliable as the "stable" releases.

How about upgrading to a release of HandBrake that isn't nearly 3.5 years old rather than expecting the 4 developers currently contributing to HandBrake to backport bugfixes in upstream libraries?

I'd also suggest disabling libdvdnav in favour of libdvdread in the advanced options and restarting HandBrake. That can often help with oddly mastered DVDs.

There is no preset by that name. The preset you're after is called "iPhone & iPod Touch".

Re: No chapters in output file

Well there are certainly chapters in the scan log you've supplied. Do you have the log for the actual encode that failed to produce chapters in the output file? What player are you using to test the output?

Re: File size differences between Windows and Mac

Lots of errors in that log... since we're missing the preamble, what are you using to decrypt your DVD? HandBrake under Windows is unable to read encrypted DVD sources unaided.

Re: High CPU and High Fan speeds during encoding

You enter the threads option to the Additional Options box on the main video tab and the default value is 1.5 * logical cores. You have a quad core CPU without Hyperthreading, so that works out to 4 * 1.5 = 6 threads. Try reducing threads to 3 or 4 to start. This will reduce CPU load and encode spee...

Have you tried updating to a nightly build? Libav, which we use for lagarith decoding, has been updated since the last stable release of HandBrake.

Aside from occasionally being a little flaky as new features or code is bedded in, I've had no quality issues using nightly builds and I've been doing so (or building from source) for years. I honestly couldn't tell you when I last ran a stable release. To answer your question, if the encode complet...

Re: High CPU and High Fan speeds during encoding

Renice won't do it, since that only changes process priority. If your system is otherwise idle then HandBrake will continue to consume all available CPU time. You may be able to reduce CPU use by manually restricting the number of threads used by the x264 encoder by adding threads=N to the additiona...
