Re: dependencies building deb from source
hm, well, --force-depends turns out not to be a solution because subsequently nothing else can be installed or removed until the 'broken' package is fixed. not sure how it works from the ppa when that lists the same dependencies. Never mind; some bit of apt-get/dpkg wizardry i don't know I guess; fo...

dependencies building deb from source
Quick background: handbrake-snapshots oneiric ppa builds no longer work properly in the precise alpha. This is not a nag about that, I know you don't support ubuntu alpha. :-) In fact the only failure I could see was that it wouldn't open the Picture Settings dialog (or it opened invisible) in the U...

Re: Strange artefacts on vc1 decoder introduced after 201101
Wasn't aware of this bug; checked, with an encode from a vc1-progressive source (The Dark Knight) done 20 November 2011 (using handbrake 4360svn according to mediainfo) and there's no sign of these artifacts. It all looks great, including in motion. Presumably it's significant for certain sources on...

De-Anamorphising
BBC HD transmit HD content anamorphically; that is 1440x1080 to be stretched by the tv/player etc. to 1920x1080. When I transcode these recordings for my vault, I've chosen, for a while now, to de-anamorphise it; that is, to a square-pixel 1920x1080 aka completely standard 1080p. So in a *sense* it'...

Re: [Rejected] iTunes Store Video Presets
What's wrong with the AppleTV preset for this purpose? In fact I've a feeling it may be better quality than iTunes purchases as it's constrained by the appletv hardware capabilities rather than Apple's priority of reducing bandwidth/filesize; but it should at least play on the same hardware.

Re: YADIF's "Double Framerate" Mode
Just popping in to register my 'yay' at this forthcoming feature. So far when I've needed to do this, I've had to use ripbot264 and boot into windows for the privilege (although many of the source materials that required it were also vc1-interlaced which can't be read by ffmpeg anyway).

Re: Handbrake Transcoding
You probably won't like the answer but it's the only thing that worked for me in the end, when I had a very similar requirement. I used SmartConverter, which just passes through a track if it doesn't need to transcode it for the target device. The reason you might not like it is that it's a Mac app,...

Re: Crashes on Natty local desktop
hehe, people keep sending me requests to add Natty to my PPA. This illustrates perfectly why that would be a bad idea. Only people who have the skills to build hb and debug issues should be using it on Natty at this time. Of course in reality many of us don't dedicate whole machines to handbraking ...

Crashes on Natty local desktop
I know, before anyone reminds me, Natty isn't supported yet. I took responsibility for my problems the moment I decided to install Natty on my main handbraking encoderbox. :-) This isn't a moan, or a request for an immediate bugfix, though I suppose if the problem persists another month or so (after...

AppleTV2 preset picture size oddity
Using svn 3696, supplying a BBC HD off-air recording as source, I get an odd size selection with the AppleTV2 preset selected. It's understandable but it may represent an edge case scenario for the size calculations. But as the source is BBC HD transmissions it may not be a sufficiently rare edge ca...

*gives everybody a hug* No, i've got the message. The message seems to be: don't make feature requests in the feature requests forum that our software design makes difficult to implement or you'll be treated like a moron. Feature requests forum is reserved for developers already familiar with the c...

Re: The Linux options on Stop please
This was previously discussed here: http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=13209 (reads...) That thread was a bit diffuse with one or two other requirements that seemed odd (if I understood right he wanted the ability to resume handbrake encodes on consecutive sessions?) And then the th...

But if a given file grows over the 4GB limit there's no kind of warning that anything's amiss. [censored]. Re: Action if mp4 without large file size selected gets too
Just to offer the practical example that triggered this post: After several days my Mac recently completed encoding my blu-ray Planet Earth episodes to mp4 using the High Profile preset. It only manages at best about 5fps encoding speed on this preset... So imagine my frustration when it turned out ...

Action if mp4 without large file size selected gets too big
An annoying thing I'm finding is that if I set a batch of stuff to be converted using eg: Normal or High Profile to mp4 format, by default the "Large file size" option isn't selected. But if a given file grows over the 4GB limit there's no kind of warning that anything's amiss. It just plu...

Dear jbrjake, I was looking at the discussion in this thread ( http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=17070 ) and I had a few questions related to that discussion. Question 1: Is interlaced output that is referred to in that thread the same as simply encoding a file without the detelecin...

Re: Speeding Up HD encodes
Since your playback device is a computer, it's pretty easy to add storage. Why bother with reencoding at all to save a dollar (literally) in disk space? Instead of a $1200 dedicated encoding box, how about $225 on a pair of 2TB drives? About 70 movies fit on each. I've been wondering that, given ho...

Re: Handbrake needs "produce interlaced file" tickbox
Well, I got pointed at MediaInfo on a thread in the XBMC forum (about something else) and have been playing. Unsurprisingly I suppose my BBC encodes are showing up as 25fps Progressive. My understanding, correct-me-yada... :-) With deinterlacing *off*, each progressive frame output is the result of ...

Re: Handbrake needs "produce interlaced file" tickbox
Unless you're using my bobbing patch, HandBrake, when deinterlacing, outputs one frame per two fields (one frame) of input, based primarily on the first field. My query was, what's happening when I'm not deinterlacing? Deinterlacing is not turned on in picture settings. And the results look great o...

Re: Handbrake needs "produce interlaced file" tickbox
So *I* thought those resulting files were still interlaced...? What's actually happening? :-) To answer myself with a guess; tell me if i'm wrong. (or right) :-) is HB making a 50fps video with each frame equating to an interlaced field; possibly being inefficient as the codec is having to deal wit...

Re: Handbrake needs "produce interlaced file" tickbox
Slightly confused now. :-) I'm commonly using HandBrake to encode 1080i recordings from BBC HD. As the i suggests, they're interlaced; especially studio-shot video. If I run these through HandBrake *without* deinterlacing or decombing, the resulting files do indeed show combing effects when viewed o...

Re: Req: Manually Add Audio Tracks
Look for an external SRT file that only contains the Elvish dialogue? http://www.opensubtitles.org Well, my method worked, in that instance. The benefit in this case of finding an srt would be that they get rendered better in playback, at least in xbmc, than the bitmap subs on the discs. But I've u...
