Intermittent video problem.

Okay, so I'm ripping Firefly episodes using mkv, h.264, constant quality 70%, AC-3 Audio, anamorphic (strict), comb filter (default), and the following options: ref=1:bframes=2:direct=auto:subq=8:analyse=all:8x8dct=1:trellis=1:no-fast-pskip=1:fil=1 The results look fantastic... EXCEPT every so often...

Re: XBMC Issues

Yes, I did confirm it was XBMC. And with the new settings you guys have given me I've got the tearing down to a minimum on XBMC too. The only time it's a problem now is rapid flashes from dark to light (like lightening or a flickering light). Glad I was able to help a bit, at least. Share your sett...

Re: Blocking/Block Lines of distortion showing up in frames

As much as I hate doing so, I don't see much choice but to go back to using 0.9.2, unless somebody can think of some other setting tweak that might solve these problems. I'm more than happy to keep experimenting if anybody has any suggestions. No one can suggest settings tweaks because you haven't ...

Re: Blocking/Block Lines of distortion showing up in frames

At this point, I'm not really sure what to offer. It's possible that what you're looking at is further encoding problems with x264 itself, but it sounds equally likely that it is some sort of player compatibility issue. In any event, unless you can identify a specific test case where x264 output co...

Re: Blocking/Block Lines of distortion showing up in frames

Okay, here's the latest results: With ":psy-rd=0,0:aq-mode=0" appended to the end of the Advanced Option string, MOST of this problem has cleared up, but I still end up seeing an occasional frame with some big blocks of video error. Backing up and re-playing the scene still reveals them, as does pla...

Re: Blocking/Block Lines of distortion showing up in frames

Back to 1,1. Setting aq-mode=0 seems to be the big difference-maker.

60 percent Constant Quality looks a little less than perfect on my big screen, though. I'm going to jack it up to 70 and try doing the full episode. See how it turns out.

Re: Blocking/Block Lines of distortion showing up in frames

And once again, playing it with another app, then going back and playing it in VLC, it runs smooth as silk. Now I'm pretty unsure of what's going on. Anyway, adding "aq-mode=0" seems to have cleaned up those moments of blocky-ness. Should I experiment with leaving that there and setting the psy-rd b...

Re: Blocking/Block Lines of distortion showing up in frames

No weird blocks or lines via VLC this time (at least not in this five-minute sample), but playback did "skip" a couple times a minute (pausing both video and sound for a split-second and then continuing.) If it helps to know, my gear is a 2.0 GHz core duo mini w/2GB of memory connected to a 720p pro...

Re: Blocking/Block Lines of distortion showing up in frames

How close did you get with the skip-ahead? It could be that you bypassed an I-frame that is gumming up the works. Give this a try: Under advanced options, in addition to the one you tried before, also include "aq-mode=0" and see if it makes a difference. Rodney I jumped up to about 15 seconds befor...

It's gotta be that or VAQ. If this shows the same problem, we'll try something else. Re: Blocking/Block Lines of distortion showing up in frames

PsyRDO = psychovisual rate distortion optimization. The basic concept is to leverage what we know about human perception to make encodes look 'better' even though they may not be as 'accurate'. The advanced options string to disable both PsyRDO and PsyTrellis for experimentation purposes is "psy-rd...

PsyRDO and how to I go about removing it?

Re: Blocking/Block Lines of distortion showing up in frames

Can you reproduce playing back the same frame range (say, 50 frames prior through the distortion) when using VLC as a player? Re: AC3 in mp4 Container

Plex (a Mac version of the XBMC) has recently become good enough that I'm DONE waiting around for Apple to fix (and in some cases, un-break) Quicktime and FrontRow. It took a while to re-do my library to fit with Plex's naming conventions, but now I've got all my shows, movies & DVDs good to go, sur...

Re: Blocking/Block Lines of distortion showing up in frames

I'm getting similar problems, and experimenting to see if I can find a setting which avoids these problems. I've been making new rips of Firefly with 9.3, and almost every episode I've done runs into this problem about 5 minutes in. It never happened to me with 9.2, but I don't want to go back if I ...

Any plans in place to un-break it?

Because of all the Quicktime 5.1 audio problems with m4v files, AVI has been my wrapper of choice for my video files. It works great with Quicktime and Perian.

Re: Deinterlace - Faster, Slow or Slower

Why not go with: 1: Fast processing, but choppy motion results. 2: Not as fast and still kinda choppy. 3: Pig slow, but the best possible results. For that matter, the "slow" setting is kind of redundant, isn't it? People who want it done quick & dirty will always choose "fast", and people who...

Re: DTS At Last

If it was true that "90%" of DTS disks offer no advantage over the AC3 tracks on the same disk (which has never been my experience), then why would ANYBODY spend the money on a home-theater amp which accepts DTS? The answer, of course, is that the other "10%" sounds spectacular. This is the "ponies"...

DTS At Last

Now that Perian has added DTS support to QuickTime, I hope somebody with more programming skills than me is motivated to add DTS passthrough (no transcoding) as an option in HandBrake. It would be awesome for me to be able to archive my DTS DVDs as h.264 files with DTS sound. When I've brought it up...

GBooker, you are correct. I was talking about the passthrough of AC3 in QuickTime in a .mov container with the Perian plug-in installed.
