Re: Exits after 4m56s DV AVI source

libav will now decode the larger-than-2GB AVI files? I'm going by what was posted here over the last two weeks - "the AVI decoder doesn't work on oversize files" has been a frequent response, with the fix being to remux to MKV before giving it to handbrake. Maybe a a "sticky" message should be compo...

Re: Exits after 4m56s DV AVI source

The issue revolves around the fact that the AVI file standard limits it to 2GB. There are non-standard extensions to go past that limit.

The licensing of the previous AVI decoder is incompatible with the way Handbrake is licensed, so it was replaced. The AVI decoder now used enforces the standard.

Activity logs, especially the Encode logs, are necessary. Without it, no one here can figure it out, either.

To be fair, you cannot search the board for "DV" or "avi". Words of 3 characters or less are not indexed and not searchable by the board software.

Re: Intel QuickSync for Mac OS X?

As reported in other threads here, QSV support relies upon an Intel API that does not currently exist for the Mac. Until it does, QSV won't be supported there. If that "something less power hungry" runs Windows, then QSV would be an option. But be aware that the QSV encoder does not shrink files as ...

Re: Action! videos and Handbrake?

There are a number of programs out there that simply move the elements from the AVI package into an MKV package, with no change to the data. I found several for different operating systems by simply searching for "convert avi to mkv" on Google. I have not tested any of them, because the only AVIs I ...

The AVI decoder in Handbrake is limited to 2GB. You will need to convert the file to a different format, such as MKV.

Re: UNABLE TO RIP WITH HB - RECENT NEW MACBOOK PRO, 16GB RAM, I7, NIVIEDA

Ripping directly from an encrypted DVD is not supported in Handbrake. It worked in the past for many Mac users because a library to decode DVDs was available. The solution that will "always" work is to use a tool that knows how to decode DVD and BD disks to do the "rip and decrypt" part of the task,...

Re: No Titles Found

Handbrake does not support directly ripping encrypted (that is, commercial) DVDs. You need a tool that can handle the decryption, such as MakeMKV. You might also consider that using a separate tool dedicated to the ripping task can improve your work flow. There is a topic here on how to get decrypti...

The supplied "High Profile" will probably work well, at least as a starting point. The only real change I make to it for my own use is to change the output type to MKV, so that I can make proper use of subtitles.

Re: problem converting avi files dvsd

That's going to depend upon your operating system.... Punch "convert avi to mkv" into your favorite search engine, and a number of possibilities come up, both free and paid, for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Each has different options.

The important one you need is "support for large AVI files".

Re: Trying to Compress Large MP4 File...new user

Do you have permission to open a file in the destination directory? The destination is set to "Atletico vs. Chelsea, UCL Semifinal, 1st Leg COMP" (no extension, no path), so it will try to create the file in the current directory, which is PROBABLY the program directory.

Re: Profile for Samsung Smart TV UE55D6500

Question for you - what do you use for the file extension? I have found that older Samsung TVs vary in their support for things based upon file extension. A file that was unplayable as a .m4v would work by renaming it to end in .mpg, and MKV files would only play across the network if they had the f...

Re: Just got Handbrake, but it's not working!

Let's see... You're trying to rip a DVD under Windows, using Handbrake. Handbrake does not support ripping encrypted (i.e., commercial) DVDs. Other tools (such as makemkv) are recommended for getting the data off the disk an into a format that Handbrake can use. Maybe your friends are making the sam...

Re: Is there a way to see how big files are before ripped?

Maybe because you really can't tell until you're analyzing the file? If you rip using a tool designed for ripping, the result will be the same size as it is on the optical disk, less any parts you decide not to rip. But when you're compressing, the result can be huger or small, depending on a lot of...
