Re: Rendering as .mp4 with x264

The thing to know is that "MP4" and "M4V" are the same file format. The reason "M4V" is used is that older Apple programs/devices would not enable some MP4 features if the file extension was not M4V. Newer Apple devices do not care. You can also tell handbrake to always use the MP4 file extension in...

Re: Rendering as .mp4 with x264

To convert an M4V file to MP4, rename the file to have .mp4 as the file extension.

Handbrake won't help you on .flv.

What John says on the hardware encoding.

Personally, I tried QSV encoding, and went back to the software encoders. The trade-offs weren't acceptable to me.

But I'm not you, so that opinion is worth ALMOST as much as you paid for it. :)

Re: i7-10700 vs Ryzen 7 3700x

The video is a consideration - the motherboard I got for my last Ryzen build at the end of May had "on board video", except that was a pass-through of the processor video, just as seen on many Intel boards, but the Ryzen processor that was in the price range I was building for didn't have its own vi...

Re: i7-10700 vs Ryzen 7 3700x

Ordinarily I'd say it's down to comparing clock speeds and core counts, but... In today's environment, matching clocks, cores, and memory capability, the AMD is going to win, if the operating system implements the workarounds for Intel's hardware vulnerabilities. If not, it should be a toss-up. Wind...

Handbrake does not support LPCM pass-through. It therefore uses your fall-back decoder.

Re: Video saved as type "File" instead of .mp4

You overrode the output file name, and removed the file extension. Rename the file to have ".mp4" as an extension, and you should be fine. rename "C:\Users\amyri\Videos\Home Movie Tape 2" "C:\Users\amyri\Videos\Home Movie Tape 2.mp4" Just remember to leave the extension intact when you modify the ou...

By default, MakeMKV should copy over subtitle tracks automatically, and handbrake should list them on the subtitle tab for selection.

Picture quality you want the CPU-based x264 and x265 encoders.

If by GPU you mean NVenc, it wins the speed race, by giving up the quality race completely.

Video tab, "Encoder Preset", move the slider to the RIGHT to go for slower encoding options. It's right above the "Fast Decode" check box. It's not necessary to go all the way to "Placebo"; there are reasons that level has that name.

Re: WTV. (Windows Recorded TV Show) file - is there anyway to convert it to make it looks good on TV through USB?

If it does, that means the decoder in the TV is the problem. If it is, I'd suggest encoding with x264 instead of x265, select slow or very slow, with the "fast decode" option, to reduce the work the TV has to do for playback.

Re: Program to recode dts audio to ac3 or mp3 of an mkv video

As mentioned, you can't do this with handbrake. You CAN do it with a batch file calling ffmpeg to do the recoding of the audio, leaving the video to be "copied" through. There are examples of how to do this in the ffmpeg documentation. Relying on the TV to decode isn't the best option, in any case. ...

I'm going by what you say and what's in your logs; your settings are reasonable for a conversion, and the converted file looks good on computer playback.

Do you have a way to use the TV as a computer monitor, and see how it looks using the computer to do the decoding?

Re: WTV. (Windows Recorded TV Show) file - is there anyway to convert it to make it looks good on TV through USB?

Are you sure your TV isn't the issue? If the result looks fine on a computer with a good video decoder, but the picture randomly breaks up playing through the TV, that's usually a sign of the decoder being overwhelmed, OR being under-fed by data. Most decoders will sacrifice the video before the aud...

"Smart TV" is a relative term, and there are no geniuses in that family. If your playback environment is such a TV, you are going to have issues with subtitles, because they usually are limited text-based subtitles. DVDs and BDs do not have text-based subtitles, so the only way to display them while...

Re: Confused about settings for burning DVDs to play on DVD players

Correct, handbrake will not burn DVDs. If you want to burn DVDs, you need DVD authoring software, and most of them will take care of converting the video to DVD standards, regardless of what the source video is. DVDs do not use h264 video, they use MPEG2, and the selection of audio codecs is limited...

Re: Can i leave denoising on for every encode?

That's the sticky point, though - One person's "detail" is another program's "noise to be smoothed out". The smaller file size comes from reducing the detail to be compressed.

Personally, I have the noise filters disabled, unless I have a specific reason to activate one of them.

MP4 files cannot contain PGS subtitles. They must be burned in to the video.

Switch to MKV and you can make the subtitles "switchable".

Are you asking if handbrake can create the file under one name, and rename it when it is complete?

Or are you asking that a "flag" file be created to indicate that the encode has completed?

Re: Can i leave denoising on for every encode?

You could set up a preset that uses NLmeans and make it your default. It will slow your encodes, of course, vs. not using a noise filter.

Using a noise filter will help reduce the size of the file (usually!), but it goes against your "(practically) indistinguishable from the source" goal.

Version 0.10.x won't update automatically to the 1.x line, because 0.x was considered "beta". Really, moving between major versions doesn't always work without manual intervention, because things like presets and queues are incompatible.

Re: Video is not compressed

When you ask questions about how handbrake handles a particular source, nothing can be done without logs. A noisy source is NOT going to see large reductions in size without significant filtering (to remove noise) or reduction of quality. A 1080p anime might see 80-90% reduction (not much detail), w...
