With upcoming changes to data protection and privacy laws in Europe coming into effect soon, we thought this would be a good time to remind everyone that we do have a privacy policy.
This applies to all users and visitors world-wide.

We have made a few changes to the language to make it clearer in relation to this new regulation but fundamentally, the terms and your rights are unchanged.

Re: High Profile

That's exactly why we ask for an activity log. Sorry I missed it in your short paste.

For the record, ac3 is supported in mp4.

Anyway, glad to hear you got it sorted.

Re: High Profile

You probably need to switch the other options as well. -e x264 -q 20.0 -a 1,1 -E ac3,faac -B auto,160 -6 auto,dpl2 -R Auto,48 -D 0.0,0.0 -f mp4 --detelecine --decomb --loose-anamorphic -m -x b-adapt=2:rc-lookahead=50 Still, this is unconventional and may not work. As stated here and on IRC, we'll ne...

Re: [SVN 1797] 6-channel AAC input does not work

Status update:

j45 has provided a patch http://handbrake.fr/pastebin/pastebin.php?show=1069 that will allow HandBrake to downsample 6 channel aac input to 2 channel, a workaround to this bug until proper 6 channel decoding and/or passthru is supported.

Re: x264 + xbmc + original xbox

vbv-bufsize and vbv-maxrate are to be used together, and do work in constant quality mode. They are most useful when you know the buffer size and bitrate limits of a hardware decoder. Getting it right with a software decoder can be difficult and different settings may be needed for different softwar...

Re: x264 + xbmc + original xbox

I use the Universal preset with the following modifications (personal preferences): No anamorphic No AC3 audio No chapter markers RF 18 for playback on large/HD displays (RF 19.25 is more than adequate for playback on SD displays) subme=9 (takes longer but gives slightly better quality) At RF 18 you...

IMHO that's a bit too restrictive. However, I would enjoy seeing that in a tooltip for the slider control.

Re: WinGUI - preset with Constant Quality=100 is not restored.

I'll prefix this with the fact that I previously worked at a video production company, and I do a lot of work with video today. Most of my workflow is uncompressed. All that to say, I don't dispute your need for more bits, and fully know that what looks good to the human eye may not look good to a c...

Re: WinGUI - preset with Constant Quality=100 is not restored.

Quick note to add: Despite the obvious point that using RF 0 is silly, the bug mentioned is probably legit. I'm guessing that there is a comparison against 0 instead of null/nil, causing a value of 0 to be seen as RF not set, instead of set to zero. +1 for removing % display in the GUI, in favor of ...

Re: WinGUI - preset with Constant Quality=100 is not restored.

RF values greater than say, 18, only increase bitrate and provide no humanly visible quality gains. x264 developers have said many times that RF 19.25 is near-transparent to the source for SD content. On HD content, an even lower RF may be necessary. I have a Panasonic GF1 and I shoot all videos as ...

Re: SDTV ~ CRF Filesize Wars

First, let me say that I always appreciate it when people do their own testing. However, much of the information you present here is not very useful, and some of it downright incorrect. Take for example your assessment that "The standard movie-size on the net is around 720mb XVID". I know exactly ho...

+1 for letting the user determine chapter markers. Worst case is the output will not begin with a chapter marker, but this should be expected behavior.

Re: Re-coding mp4/aac5.1 for iPod Touch produces weird result :(

I should mention, the language being "und" or "eng" is probably not the issue. Rather, I'm calling attention to the lack of a bitrate listed in the former example, as well as "5.1" being used rather than "6 channels".

Re: Re-coding mp4/aac5.1 for iPod Touch produces weird result :(

I've been trying to narrow this down a bit. The audio in your source is read by ffmpeg like this: Stream #0.1(und): Audio: aac, 48000 Hz, 5.1, s16 However, in my testing, what HandBrake produces when selecting 6-channel discrete AAC output from AC3 input is read back by ffmpeg like this: Stream #0.1...

Re: How to determine bitrate?

Your subme is lower, trellis is different, b-frame count is different, aq is different, cqm... these are quite different settings and *should* produce completely different output. As far as blocks in darker areas, no-dct-decimate may help. Your aq strength is different from the other settings as wel...

Re: How to determine bitrate?

An encode at RF=19 or lower should be damn near transparent to the original source. Going lower than RF=18 is practically pointless. Quality and bitrate are only loosely related, and you most certainly do not need anywhere near 15GB to do a decent hidef encode with the latest x264. 5mbps x264 is inc...

Re: Encoding from point A to point B

I can verify that on most sources (various containers and durations) this does appear to be start-time accurate within one second, and produces the requested duration. With transport streams the start time can be off by as much as 30 seconds or more, but this is expected given van's comments: http:/...

[Fixed] Crash when opening sources with unidentified audio

Summary: There seems to be an issue with how HandBrake deals with source files containing a valid video track and either 1) an unidentified audio track or 2) no audio track. Software: HandBrake svn2907 x86_64 (2009110101), Mac OS X 10.6.2 Tested sources: Transport Streams with 1080p video and variou...

Re: File sizes for "iPod High" preset

I hate to supplement what the other devs have written, but I think it might be all of this "bit" talk that's confusing people. If you have no idea what a bit is, this is for you. There are 8 bits in a byte. There are 1024 bytes in a kilobyte (kibibyte, proper). There are 1024 kilobytes in a megabyte...

This patch worked well against a known problematic DVD that even MTR (any version) doesn't handle well. Previously I had to Fairmount + Dtox to avoid problems with zero cells. Works fine straight off the disc with the patch (not that anyone should rip that way).

Nice side effect. Go van.
