Re: NL-means denoise filter

I just added a couple more animation examples. Anime fans will love this filter; it does a great job preserving edges.

Just double-checked; it should be correct. I did test on the cli.

Re: NL-means denoise filter

Indeed, it is very slow. However, I'm hopeful that with threading I may achieve 2x real time fps on my CPU, possibly more with improvements to the algorithm. So maybe 0.5x to 1x real time fps for typical machines, eventually. Will be fun to compare performance against HEVC!

Re: Handbrake won't encode past .01%

I'm starting to suspect that copy protection hasn't been fully removed. I realize you said you removed any protections. It is possible to back up a disc using MakeMKV without removing protections, so double check your method. Also, do you perhaps have 64-bit HandBrake and 32-bit VLC? HandBrake shoul...

Re: Keeping interlaced material interlaced?

No doubt, your natively progressive plasma employs a high quality bob-like deinterlacer. With my similar background I often hear that deinterlacing destroys motion, which is a half truth; it really depends on the method used as you've discovered by bobbing. Since today all interlaced video is always...

Re: TV Range Output Only?

Indeed, but assuming the player isn't inconsistent, a given card should be consistently off. Given that he's on Mac, I doubt it's a driver issue.

Re: Keeping interlaced material interlaced?

HandBrake has a pretty decent bob filter, if you're looking to preserve the original motion. IMHO it is better to bob then playback progressive than to encode interlaced.

Re: TV Range Output Only?

I was just thinking about this the other day. Years ago we had some reports of color shifts that most likely were the result of uncalibrated monitors. That said, I'm not sure whether the assumptions we make about colors are correct for all cases. We make some of these calculations happen long before...

NLMeans denoise filter

Update: HandBrake 1.0.0 and later switched to a key=value parameter setting. 6.0:1:7:3:2:0 (NLMeans Medium) passed as a custom parameter setting would now be: y-strength=6:y-origin-tune=1:y-patch-size=7:y-range=3:y-frame-count=2:y-prefilter=0 The parameters format is as follows: y-strength=y:y-orig...

Re: Median Filter for denoise

Well... it's barely working but I'm going to hold off on the patch until I fix a few things. Here's some eye candy: [link removed] Spatial filtering only for now. Need to implement a buffer for temporal filtering (had to gut a lot of the original source just to get it working). Anyway, seems promisi...

Re: Median Filter for denoise

Quick update: I continue to work on nlmeans. Part of the delay is that my reference implementation is C++ despite being written for ffmpeg, which is C. In short, it's plenty of work somewhat outside of my experience. Haven't dealt with C++ in >15 years. That said, I'm still at it. The moment I have ...

Re: Mosaic video display on .m4v copy of BluRay

And you're right, but unfortunately that's not always the case. I mention the above because mosaicing is the primary artifact created by BD+. Short of employing a JVM identical to the Blu-ray spec's, it's nearly impossible to counteract BD+ on the fly and takes hours to create a workable solution us...

Re: Automation of handbrakecli on folders

Try using find instead of ls, and feed the full path to the cli, e.g. for FILE in $(find $SRC 2>/dev/null) $HANDBRAKE_CLI -i $FILE ... You may also wish to replace your for loop, which can actually fail in some terminals given a large enough result set. Some guidance: http://stackoverflow.com/questi...

Re: Some chose a lower RF for HD video than SD. Why?

Indeed. I'd remux if hardware like AppleTV better supported sliced encoding employed by modern content. Closer, but still not lossless. I certainly keep a lossless copy of all my personal projects. ;)

Re: Some chose a lower RF for HD video than SD. Why?

I'll add that viewing context is paramount. The larger your display, the more apparent artifacts will be at normal viewing distances. The following assumes local playback on wired connections where storage and bandwidth are plentiful. Way long ago before RF was a thing, I encoded SD at what would no...

Re: Flac to DTS audio converter.

eac3to is an open source audio transcoder for Windows that may suit your purpose, however DTS encoding requires the commercial (non-free) Surcode DVD DTS encoder. If AC3 (Dolby Digital) is an acceptable alternative for you, eac3to does this with no additional software. More info on eac3to: http://en...

Re: Further image scaling algorithms

Having some experience with super resolution algorithms, I can say that the results are typically not dramatic if you're going for a natural looking upscale. Animation excepted, of course. That said it's cool tech, and patches as always, are welcome. I've not yet found an open source implementation ...

Re: Median Filter for denoise

Indeed, I've been working on it but also taking a break over some US holidays. No reason others shouldn't feel free to do the same. NL-means (and similar) is likely the most promising algorithm I've seen in years. Unfortunately, with the code I'm starting with and the sse opts which won't carry over...

Really great to see so many responses to the call for help here. A few comments/critiques of meathead100's icon. There are areas that, in a sense, may be almost too realistic. A little trickery for the eye and some polish may go a long way. For example, someone commented that the pineapple is too da...
