Yeah, and I messed up that should really be 0.8.6c :P

I'm having trouble with watching mkv's in VLC. I can make a movie with handbrake that will play fine as an MP4 or avi, but once I mux it to mkv seeking is broken in VLC. I have the chapters unticked and everything. I think I heard somewhere that this is a known issue. I really don't want to go back...

So far no luck with getting it build under cygwin or mingw/msys cygwin is missing mingw headers and is producing a configure error for everything. Something to do with the C compiler not being able to make executables. If you could post one of the configure.log from the failed configure, I'll see w...

Compiling HandBrake with MinGW.

This was a little test I did to see if I could get HandBrake to compile natively under the MinGW compiler and libraries. After messing around with quite a bit I've got it to work. Please note, the point of this exercise was to get to get HandBrake to compile only, I assumed some things would be (and...

I assume you mean for stereo AAC? 160's the max faac will do I think, and you should really use that - although it's still not going to sound astoundingly good. For my iPod, I use 128 - because neither the headphones nor the listening environment are ideal. The way HandBrake is currently setup it's...

I don't remember it being available then, so don't hold your breath :) sr55 was having problems with the redirect scrip...

Thanks for reporting this, I'm looking into it. Seems to be something with chapters. It'll work just fine if you disable chapter markers.

That's fine, just make sure you don't set your vbv too low, or you'll just end up with a CBR encode at that bitrate :puke:

This was done because without VBV buffering, CABAC produces too large of bitrate spikes, and the AppleTV can't handle it. This causes stuttering, and that's a bad thing ;)

If you're reffering to bitrate spikes, it has nothing to do with the storage/delivery method. It's part of the codec itself. Most video codecs use Average BitRate (ABR). This means that they don't use one set bitrate, but the average over the entire movie will be about a certain rate. This allows fo...

As an introduction I don't have an AppleTV, but have learned this from when the other devs were attempting to learn how to use vbv buffering to help their AppleTV encodes. The reason 2500 was chosen, was to keep too large of bitrate spikes (and thus stuttering) from happening. It's the highest bitra...

DivX Media Format according to Wikipedia. Which is just an extension of AVI using hacks similar to the ones already in use by everyone else.

MP4 does. Matroska does.
However it would be near impossible to copy over the menus from the dvd with HandBrake's current structure.

I have found the exact opposite to be true, that FAAC is far superior to the iTunes AAC encoder. You can open an FAAC encoded file vs. an iTunes AAC encoded file in any spectral analysis viewer (such as this one http://www.baudline.com/ ) and see the difference yourself. FAAC retains far more audio...

Re: Correct Track information for AC3 Passthrough

Ripped a 5.1, 48kHz track using HB into an mkv file. Using mkvinfo, I see: | + Sampling frequency: 44100.000000 | + Channels: 0 Both of those are wrong. It would be very helpful in HB examined the first track header and filled in correct values from that. You only need to look at the first 7 bytes ...

Most likely the MKV info is wrong because HB doesn't set it correctly. I posted a related topic on this: http://handbrake.m0k.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2415 Yes, I've noticed that, but have never gotten around to fixing it. And it's not specific to MKV, it would be any container that does AC3 pass-...

If you specify AC3 pass-through, Then that's what you get. You can ignore the messages that say mixdown. The same thing will happen if you specify AC3 pass-through with AVI. If you really don't want it to say that you could add '-6 6ch', but you will be getting the same thing, all this will do is ch...

Hey saintdev, First of all, I don't think you can do that in HandBrake: enter your settings for a first pass in ABR, then have different settings for a second pass in the ABR, in that EXACT encoding. Not saying you can't - you certainly can with hardcore encoding raw with x264 - but how do you do t...

The 360 can handle pretty much anything you throw at it. The only tech note that I could find stated that they had tested up to 10Mbps ABR. The only thing they don't state is what feature set it supports (Main Profile only, High Profile).

I've never tried this before, but the way that 2-pass works, is the first pass' stats file is used to make decisions on what frame types to use at any given point. So if you were to increase the bitrate for the second pass, it would just use the frame types that were generated for the lower bitrate,...
