Enter Picture Dimensions via keyboard in the GUI

I've always wanted to be able to enter the picture dimensions in using the keyboard rather than using the up/down arrow buttons in the picture settings/size and crop sections of the GUI. An example of when this would be helpful is when scaling from 1920x1080 to 1280x720 or 960x540, it would be nice ...

Re: Combing Detection

mode : metric : motion-threshold : spatial-threshold : block-threshold : block-width : block-height Defaults are: 1 : 2 : 6 : 9 : 80 : 16 : 16 For using Decomb's method you'll want: 1 : 1 : 6 : 20 : 15 : 4 : 8 (which I believe emulates its default settings) When using mode 0, it uses a hard-coded c...

Yah, I'll try with those settings.

Re: Combing Detection

I also tested the latest patch on a couple of sources. I used 1 : 1 : 6 : 20 : 15 : 4 : 8 because somewhere above you mentioned those values. On the Jet video, I saw no combing! very nice work. Here is the filter stats decomb: yadif deinterlaced 19 | blend deinteraced 337 | unfiltered 4762 | total 5...

Re: Can't build x264 anymore? Get yasm.

Thank you, mac_man_ad, that worked like a charm! To anyone else who may have difficulty with this on an Intel based Mac let me supplement jbrjake's instructions (some of this may be overkill but it worked for me). 1. download and unzip the source code jbrjake links to 2. open terminal and navigate ...

Re: Combing Detection

sdm, I'm not sure what I can do at this point. The comb detection is still too unrefined to do what's needed for all these situations. Yah, I've been thinking - given the effort you've been putting in - that it must be incredibly difficult to find the right algorithm suitable for the wide range of ...

Re: Combing Detection

Thanks jbrjake for continued work! I've done a little testing on some problem sources since applying the patch. The default comb-detect has done a good job on some of those transitions we talked about before! Here are some examples where comb-detect and deinterlace could stand a little improvement i...

Re: Combing Detection

Any chance of of a patch to access the different modes and and comb detect options in the MacGui? Dynaflash? I'm curious if there is an elegant way... As for frame blending, I've generally always avoided it - although I know it has its benefits like jbrjake mentions as well as smooth motion. I'd be ...

Re: Combing Detection

Great - thanks! I'm going to experiment with these parameters. By the way, I just came across a source video that I think is excellent for testing decomb. A music video "Jet - Are You Going to be My Girl". Its excellent because its really easy to see frames that had the deinterlace filter run on the...

Re: Combing Detection

hi jbrjake, I've been using/testing the comb detect patch. Seems good. Unfortunately misses some tough to see combed frames. http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/3384/theoffspringgottagetawagh2.jpg I did just happen to notice playing at normal speed though. This is with the colour diff value = 23. I a...

Re: Combing Detection

By reducing the gap needed for it to detect a difference, it can see the cross-fades. Downside: it ends up deinterlacing more frames :/ Default diff of 30: Code: [15:11:54] deinterlacer: filtered 111 | unfiltered 10942 | total 11053 Diff of 23: Code: [15:04:32] deinterlacer: filtered 324 | unfilter...

Re: Combing Detection

Hey great work! This patch detected, (and de-interlaced) all the frames that I noticed were encoded combed in my previous examples. I did use it on another source and it didn't detect this type of combed frame: http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/4797/oasischampagnesupernovafg9.jpg This frame and a c...

Re: DivX to iPod?

A few other free options for converting DivX to iPod on the mac are Mpeg StreamClip (export to mp4 for iTunes) or QT Sync (export to iPod). They all rely on QuickTime so you have to install Perian to make them recognize DivX, it also means that it's on the slow side and quality isn't always that gr...

(playback looks fine capped using 5900/4500 with CRF=65. the average bitrate ended up about 4900kbps. I can live with that I guess) Wow, thats wicked high for 65 imho. When you go back to this source, tack on Weak Denoise, my guess is that this source is very noisy (I think you said concert footage...

Yes, I've encoded with various CRF settings.
I'm gonna call it a day with this encode. (playback looks fine capped using 5900/4500 with CRF=65. the average bitrate ended up about 4900kbps. I can live with that I guess)

Thanks for your insights.

Re: ATV 2.x Advanced Settings (All Sources)

Thought you seem to be using it to limit file size, it is actually designed to limit local bitrates to stay within a given video buffer You're right - Lately, I've been thinking vbv isn't really the right tool for job, especially in the case where most of the encode is at the vbv ceiling, but ... Re: ATV 2.x Advanced Settings (All Sources)

Thanks Rodney. There's just one other question above: I'm also curious - theoretically, if a video is mostly CRF encoded near the cap say 4500kbps, would it then make sense to say the CRF of say 66% is not really being met, and therefore, in theory, a 2-pass ABR encode at 4500kbps would provide bett...

Re: ATV 2.x Advanced Settings (All Sources)

So i suspect since your playback device is a mac mini, you're capping to tame the size of the file. If true, then find numbers that gives you a file size you like. Just be sure that the maxrate is larger than bufsize. Yup - exactly, I want to cap it to tame the file size. Its a question of principl...

I wouldn't lower the percentage, but I would add vbv to cap off the bitrate. Cavalicious, I've been looking into VBV and browsed this: http://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/VBVRateControl, A non-discriminatory capping of bitrate would lead to serious image degradation in highly complex scenes - right? I ge...

Re: ATV 2.x Advanced Settings (All Sources)

we are now using Dark_Shikari's vaq patch to x264. I warn you all that this will bloat crf file sizes and bitrates. However, you can use a lower cq value and get a better encode. I notice the VAQ definitely reduces the blocking in flat areas of the picture!! and it definitely bloats the files size ...

Re: how much extra file size does the add'l AAC track add?

For many of us, the comma in your number is quite misleading.
Where I come from (Canada), you'd write 112.5 MB and 140.625 MB

Hope that helps sierramadre.

I've been having problems with it lately too. On an intel machine.
It crashes if I make any sudden movements. Put too many files in etc.
If I just take it easy, it works okay.
