I am toying with the idea of just ripping to video_ts for the same reasons. at about 35 cents/GB, many dvds have a movie-only size of about 3-5 GB. or $1.75 HD space. Is it worth my time to save $1.00's worth of HD space (and decrease video quality (slightly) and lose proper surround*)? Hmmm ... thi...

... only change the "average bitrate" to 1000 and the codecs to AVC/H.264 The you choose AVC/H.264 you are encoding with a more advanced/efficient codec that also takes significantly (several times) longer. If you leave the video codec as mpeg4 using the ffmpeg encoder, you'll see much faster encod...

hi katrock79 Sorry, I shouldn't have answered since I don't really have the time to guide you right now. Anyways, forget Handbrake for this project. Download Mpeg Streamclip from http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html drag one of the larger .vobs from the video ts onto the streamcli...

convert your vobs to .dv (not mp4) for editing in iMovie.
Use mpeg streamclip to do it.

Hi jbrjake, The activity log above was from an encode of the first 3 chapters, not the entire title. Below is the activity for an encode of all 8 chapters. Can you see more missing frames in this log? Anyways, in the first 3 chapters there are more than 2 missing frames (maybe 10 or so). I'll count ...

Here is an update. Used Fairmount to copy Video_TS, looked for zero cells using dtox but none were found. Ran HB on using classic settings. Same result - missing (not dropped in playback) frames. Tried Visual Hub on same Video_TS using its default settings - no frames missing (also no chapters, surr...

I think the answer is 'yes', use anamorphic par on 4:3 content if you are going to be scaling up the video.

In my case 4:3 material gets scaled to 960(w) x 720(h) to be viewed on a 1280(w) x 720(h) hdtv.
Scaling 720(w) -> 960(w) is better than scaling 640(w) -> 960(w).
Right?

Missing Frames in HB encodes

On season 6 of the Sopranos, I've found multiple missing frames in every HB encode. I'm not saying 'dropped frames' during playback but 'missing' altogether. See the following sequence: http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/6893/screengrabchaps13ic6.gif There is supposed to be a frame between these two...

I say go for it!
All my encoded video gets blown up to view on my TV (4:3 stuff gets blown up to 960x720) so for me I guess it'd make no difference.

I just wanted to report I've applied the patch above to an svn of HandBrake and tested on 30 Rock season 1 - (its hard-telecined to 29.97 fps - at least the episodes I've looked at) I encoded using ffmpeg encoder into mp4 container (mp4+aac) and chose 29.97fps and de-telecine as recommended. The res...

Thanks Hawkman. I got the patch working in a recent SVN - it turns out there were some line breaks where there should have been none. My main goal here is to used HandBrake on dvd titles containing both hard telecine and soft telecine (ie progressive with 2:3 pulldown). I tried using mp4 container, ...

hmmm. I think you are referring to the ""Same as source" FPS Improvements"?

I'd love to test it, but I'm not familiar with how to add your patch. And forgive me, but I suspect learning it may require more time than I have right now.

Unless its easy?

Great! So Handbrake's detelecine filter will just leave the progressive film stuff untouched? Is the discarding of duped frames something in active development, and we may see in an upcoming release? I have the latest SVN, but can't select de-telecine on these titles (no matter what framerate option...

the CG stuff rhester is talking about is a different frame rate (29.97). When you change the frame rate to 23.98, you must drop 6 frames/sec and it will look choppy. Simple as that.

You may want to look for an encoder that can do frame blending if you really want it to be 23.98 fps.

It's a video from a band called Technotronic - Pump Up the Jam. Lots of lights, movement and very bad source from the actual video shot in 1989 with cheap film and bad animation. Funny thing. rhester - how close? is this due to A/V sync? ie. if audio track is 0.5 sec longer than the video track in the first mp4, will the audio be 0.5 sec behind the video for portion of the combined mp4 that came from the second mp4? wow, it makes sense in my head - do you know what I mean? thanks, --sdm.

detelecine partial title

I searched and couldn't find this requested before or in the plans. Please forgive me if I missed it. Sopranos Season 5 has the first chapter (intro) hard telecined to 29.97fps. The bulk of each episode is 23.98fps with 2:3 pulldown flags. The credits seem to be fully interlaced at 29.97fps Seasons ...

with some learning and disk space, AviDemux can do inverse telecine and output to .avi (mjpeg+wav) OR for even better quality use .avi(ffhuffyuv+wav) if you have a couple hundred free gigs and Perian installed.

That can then be imported into FCP (but will still need rendering) and edited

If you are wanting to edit in final cut pro, you should: 1. rip the dvd to your hard drive (with 'mac the ripper') 2. convert to .dv (mpeg streamclip is a good way) 3. import .dv into final cut pro 4. edit your video 5. export to more compressed video codec using compressor or mpeg streamclip you'll...

mpeg streamclip with negative cropping
- i.e a negative value for top and bottom crop values.
'-56' will work might be the right value.
just tried it to make a 640x368 become 640x480 with black bars top an bottom.
