Re: Upscaling 480P to 720P

Your image is a terrible example, but the description accurately states each field is 1/60th a second apart for smoother motion.

Re: Upscaling 480P to 720P

It takes two fields to make anything resembling a "distinct image." Deinterlacing does not "destroy half the temporal information." Adjacent fields are not "discarded." Reinventing the English language just isn't I have agree with Jack here. Each field can contain one image to itself. It takes 2 fi...

Re: Upscaling 480P to 720P

I didn't mean for this to turn into a war about deinterlacing methods as I clearly stated 480p in the title. But to clear up the interlace 30 vs 60 fps issue. Back when TV was first produced and the creators were trying to find a way to offer sharp pictures and smooth motion over the small amount of...

Re: Upscaling 480P to 720P

SD was never shot or delivered for 60fps consumer playback, save for the brief appearance of EDTV (HDV-SD) about a decade ago. Until then, progressive frames did not exist above 320x240. NTSC video has temporal information at 60hz, that's 60 fields per second with 2 fields stored in each frame. Dei...

Re: Upscaling 480P to 720P

What is being called 60i today is actually the HD-era term for 29.97i, or NTSC. Likewise for 50i which is 25i PAL. Why would Youtube support a playback standard that isn't used? I guess I misspoke using the term SD. I'm talking about 480P 60FPS EDTV. Like footage from an original XBOX or Wii in pro...

Upscaling 480P to 720P

I know this sounds like a useless idea, but I would like to see the ability to upscale lower resolution videos to 720P. The reason behind this is youtube now allows 60FPS video to be uploaded, but only 720P or 1080P video. My 60fpS SD video gets covered to 30fps on youtube. It would be nice to have ...

Decomb bob reverses field order mid encode

Im putting this in bugs, If it needs to be moved admins, please do. Anyway, I've was trying to encode an old home video. VHS from the 80s converted to DVD. Well in some parts of the video, the field order reverses and the video becomes jumpy. Ive noticed this as well when converting some 1080i video...

Re: Motion judder on "Get Smart" PAL

Decomb "Bob" takes into account every possible frame up to 60FPS. Interlaced video contains 2 separate frames (called fields) in 1 video frame. So in PAL, it runs at 25 FPS but could contain 50FPS of information. Its possible just deinterlacing or decombing is throwing out half the motion informatio...

Re: Movie file is really big

It could be the film grain that older movies are most likley to have. Handbrake tries to keep a constant quality, so when you have scenery that's constantly looking different from an encoders point of view, it adds more bits to make it look like the original. Simplistically Mpeg 4 works by repeating...

Re: Jittery motion

Sounds like missing frames. PBS HD is 1080i I assume since 1080P is not broadcasted. 1080i (or 480i for that matter) contains 60FPS of information. Handbrake can not take interlaced material and deinterlace to 60P. It converts down to 30P giving a slight jitter compared to the original source as hal...

Re: Deinterlace - would you recommend?

No, detelecine will not hurt to have on. If the encoder can't find a 3:2 pulldown cadence, it will just leave the video alone.

Re: Deinterlace - would you recommend?

in most cases, don't use deinterlace unless the source has a interlaced frame every frame (full 60fps materal). Deinterlacing lowers the vertical resolution in half. So 480 becomes 240. Also handbrake can't reconstruct 60FPS material. It will output only 30fps. As Your example with the simpsons was ...

Re: Using Anamorphic encoding with WD TV Live Plus

Im going to keep this answer to the point to explain anamorphic settings and how the WDTV handles them. When encoding footage anamorpically, You encode in the original pixel ratio (to save space), but a tag gets put in that tells the player how wide a video should be. Be it 16:9 or 4:3, the DVD vide...

Re: jittery video streaming to xbox 360

I don't know why, but the xbox has issues playing VFR (variable frame rate) videos. Its not handbrake but the xbox itself. Even VFR videos made on my ipod touch has issues. If you set handbrake to use a constant framerate, the issue goes away. For most movies this is fine, but for some movies, using...

For now, until handbrake gets de-interlace to 60fps (if ever), that is the quickest way to do this on a mac.

Re: Deinterlacing Results in Dropped Frames

Unfortunatly handbrake does not deinterlace 30i into 60p. It only does 30i to 30p by dropping the second field In each frame. Each field can contain a completely separate frame. Its old technology to sqeeze 60FPS into the bandwith of 30. Now if you can convert the footage to dv and run it through js...

Re: Which format to use for big screen

I use the apple "universal" setting. Makes movies that are compatible with apple TV, Xbox360, ps3, WDTV, Ipods.I just turn off the ac3 passthrough track as my only change as it causes issues with anything not apple like xbox or ps3. The quality is very near the original DVDs. If you sit at proper vi...

On OSX, is there any difference between the 64bit and 32 bit other than ones 64bit and ones 32bit? I think I remember older versions of the 64bit version could not rip dvds from disc.

Re: Audio synchronization (lip sync) with interlaced sources

after experimenting, ive come to this conclusion. When doing a video that has to rely on VFR like a movie copied off TV which has to detelcined, is where the problem really arises. QT plays back perfectly in sync, VLC has sync issues, MY ipods play back perfectly, My xbox360 is way out of sync and pl...

Re: burning freeware

My question to you is why would you convert a .vob to mpeg4 and then back to dvd? .vob is the main container of the dvd format and can be burned directly to a dvd if you have the right program (like toast) with no quality loss. Going to mpeg4 will degrade the quality and then back to DVD will degrad...

Re: new handbrake rips play back choppy on xbox 360

I found the issue, but still not sure if its a handbrake or xbox issue. It seems when you leave it on "same as source" in the framerate, i guess handbrake assumes that it is going to be a veritable frame rate output. Now if i set the output to a constant frame rate with the exact same settings, it p...

i have a similar issue with some dvds. One is interlaced, the other is not. Ive also gone back to 9.2 and its still not working properly. It's doing what the other guy said that the audio will be fine and perfectly in sync. In a cut, you'll hear a slight hiccup in the audio and then, out of sync. Th...

new handbrake rips play back choppy on xbox 360

Im not sure if this is a handbrake issue or xbox issue (most likely xbox issue I assume), but video files converted to h.264 in the new handbrake play back choppy on an xbox 360. Old rips from the last version of handbrake work fine. The new files work fine on my computer and WDTV, but not on the xb...
