Re: MP4 to Avi

Oh no, Vegas Pro is an editor of choice for those who use Handbrake as their encoder of choice. Done it commercially for a decade. You just have to give Vegas the RIGHT mp4 files, and that does not include Variable Frame Rate! It does have other AVC limitations and we can tell you exactly how to set...

You are ten years late to use Handbrake as a ripper. Follow @Woodstock's advice.
Maybe clean your disc too.

Re: NVENC using constant bitrate

I get a "mediocre" approximation of RF20 software at CQ13 hardware, so yeah.
I don't use it because the file size is larger and I would never publish it to YT or anywhere.
Would prefer a fast chip without GPU encoding.

Re: Re-Encode size LARGE

In all this, nobody bothered to mention that the file size problem is due to his choice of RF. RF 0 means encode losslessly.
He pointed out the error without giving an explanation :)

The same 2 of 3 tradeoff still applies, you're just picking speed when you pick a hardware encoder so you only have one choice left between size and quality. You can't not pick speed with the hardware encoders.
+1. Well said.
I would say "limited quality" in reference to software x264/x265.

Re: Which Version supports ALL CORES rendering?

How about if Handbrake used enough (optimal) cores instead?
x265 is better at utilizing >8 logical processors than x264, but forcing all cores can actually slow things down from overhead collateral.

Re: Re-Encode size LARGE

Yes, there is a distinction. You will not author a BluRay without using BluRay authoring software, which can be as simple as a single movie or slideshow (BDAV), or as complex as commercial movie discs (BDMV). An mp4/mkv file burned to a BluRay blank is an example of a data disc. Compliant authoring ...

Re: Re-Encode size LARGE

Sorry to make the distinction again, but it comes up periodically. One can drop just about anything Handbrake can render onto a BluRay blank and it will play, as a data file. Authoring a BluRay, with interactive titles, menus, chapters, angles, and multiple audios and features, is a different matter...

Re: Any Reason for GPU encodes if Quality is Priority

You can get "closer" at CQ 13-14, but the files are larger than x264 and not good enough for me. I haven't felt a need for hardware encoding in almost a year. To give to my enemies, maybe. The oldest advice is sometimes the best. "Size, Quality, Speed, Pick two." With hardware encoders, it seems red...

Re: Re-Encode size LARGE

Just try the "HQ 1080p30 Surround" profile Yes, that sounds like a great place to start. Handbrake presets do what they say, and get it right every time! Stay off other internet sites, pick a preset AS-IS, and see what you get. Futzing is Futile. BTW, the title of the page you linked is "Authoring ...

Not unless you're in a hurry. For "comparable" quality, your NVENC files may actually be Quite a bit larger than with x264.

Really, with your SD source, Main profile with 3 Ref/B frames is plenty. Depending on your Level, there are restrictions on the number. The presets are always right, and optimal speed/compression tradeoff, so stick there.
