Re: Bug encoding closed captioning

Well, I can't reproduce your issue fully with the sample. The file plays in QuickTime (7.6.4) and iTunes, no matter which subtitle track is selected. In VLC, I only see one subtitle track (the SRT file's subtitle track). Also, the file will play on my iPhone as long as I don't select the first subti...

Re: Whats difference between Apple Universal and Apple TV preset

The AppleTV preset generates smaller files because it uses H.264 features not supported by iPods.

Unless your iPod touch is a 3rd. gen model (introduced in September of this year), you need to use the Universal preset. The AppleTV preset won't work.

Re: Problem with Handbrake 64 bit & VLC 64bit

Well then VLC was not in /Applications, but in /Applications/VLC (which is not the same folder). (Is it generally a good idea to have programs at the top level of the /Applications folder? So far I haven't had problems keeping a program's ancillary stuff along with the program itself in its own fold...

Re: Whats difference between Apple Universal and Apple TV preset

The difference is that the Universal preset will generate larger files, but work on all iPhones and iPod touches, the iPod classic and iPod nano.

The AppleTV preset will only work on the AppleTV, iPhone 3GS and 3rd. generation iPod touch.

Can you try with the exact same settings, but without b-pyramid, to check if it still crashes?

Also, can you post a crash log?

Nope. it used to be in 0.9.3, but CQP isn't really useful when CRF is available, so it was removed.

Weird. Makes sense for QuickTime if your file had the .mp4 extension, but VLC should have seen the subtitles anyway.

Re: How to include closed captions (Quicktime/iPhone)

I am using 0.9.4 and have tried to select the closed caption track but when I view the file in Quicktime, the "View --> Show Closed Captioning" option is grayed out (I also don't have any subtitles available to me to choose from, in case it was hidden there). Actually HandBrake does place...

HandBrake's constant quality mode for x264 uses CRF, not CQP.

Re: How to determine bitrate?

As I understand, a particular video when encoded with CQ and 2 pass ABR have the same sizes then the 2 pass ABR would have better quality Not really. At the same bitrate, 2-pass ABR and CRF will produce very similar encodes (according to x264 developer Dark_Shikari, nearly identical). The choice is...

Can you provide a log with verbosity above or equal to 2 (you should be able to set it in HandBrake's preferences somewhere)?

Re: Advanced Option String not always as expected

Will this have any impact on my encoded files? I see the 'extra' entries are "=0" so I'm assuming not. =0 means an option gets disabled, so in most cases it would affect the output. In this case though, it's only a "comestic" issue: since b-frames are disabled anyway, weightb=0 ...

Well, I exported the clip in QT Pro, and that works as you say, but for the whole movie, which is 3.5 hours long, that takes about 6 hours. Time I prefer not to have to waste. And I then I also lose the chapter setting on the iPhone. I never said export . A simple Save As worked for me with your sa...

Re: No 64bit VLC. What now smart guys?

It'll be "fixed" when VLC fix their 64-bit bugs and release an official 64-bit build again. There's nothing the HandBrake devs can do about it.

In the meantime, you can either use HandBrake 32-bit or use VLC 1.0.2 64-bit:

Re: Format in 0.9.4 that works with Iphone & PS3

Unless you have an iPhone 3G S , in which case the High Profile preset (minus the AC3 track) should work as well. Also, note that iTunes won't let you sync HD video to your iPhone (regardless of model), so you'll have to make sure your video does not exceed 720 x 576 (up to 25.00 fps) or 720 x 480 (...

It's not a CLI option, it's an x264 option. Works in the GUI's advanced panel too.

Uncheck "Use CoreAudio instead of FAAC for preset default encoder" in preferences (audio tab).

Though I'm not sure why you'd want to do that - Core Audio is a much better AAC encoder than faac.

1.85:1 movies are very close to 16:9 aspect ratio and should fill a properly configured 16:9 TV. 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 movies, on the other hand, are wider than 16:9 and therefore should fill a 16:9 TV's width, but display with letterboxing at the top and bottom. Either way, you should not see any pillar...

I liked the older version where Closed Caption was being able to be burned onto the video and now with the new update, its not doing what i wanted it to do.
