The AppleTV preset generates smaller files because it uses H.264 features not supported by iPods.

Unless your iPod touch is a 3rd. gen model (introduced in September of this year), you need to use the Universal preset. The AppleTV preset won't work.

Well then VLC was not in /Applications, but in /Applications/VLC (which is not the same folder). (Is it generally a good idea to have programs at the top level of the /Applications folder? So far I haven't had problems keeping a program's ancillary stuff along with the program itself in its own fold...

The difference is that the Universal preset will generate larger files, but work on all iPhones and iPod touches, the iPod classic and iPod nano.

The AppleTV preset will only work on the AppleTV, iPhone 3GS and 3rd. generation iPod touch.

Under Mac OS X, you will find them in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter (where ~ is your Home folder).

Can you try with the exact same settings, but without b-pyramid, to check if it still crashes?

Nope. it used to be in 0.9.3, but CQP isn't really useful when CRF is available, so it was removed.

Weird. Makes sense for QuickTime if your file had the .mp4 extension, but VLC should have seen the subtitles anyway.

It'll be "fixed" when VLC fix their 64-bit bugs and release an official 64-bit build again. There's nothing the HandBrake devs can do about it.

In the meantime, you can either use HandBrake 32-bit or use VLC 1.0.2 64-bit:

What are you using to playback your encodes?

Unless you have an iPhone 3G S , in which case the High Profile preset (minus the AC3 track) should work as well. Also, note that iTunes won't let you sync HD video to your iPhone (regardless of model), so you'll have to make sure your video does not exceed 720 x 576 (up to 25.00 fps) or 720 x 480 (...

It's not a CLI option, it's an x264 option. Works in the GUI's advanced panel too.

Uncheck "Use CoreAudio instead of FAAC for preset default encoder" in preferences (audio tab).
