Re-encode 6-channel discrete audio to stereo

Hi, I have a couple of HD movies (1080p) encoded with 6-channel discrete audio. When re-encoding them for my iPad, the only option available is AAC Stereo. The result movie file, though, is three times as long as expected. It obviously joins two of the six audio channels to create stereo sound, addi...

Older movies generate larger files

After encoding a couple of HD movies using Handbrake, I noticed that older movies tend to create much larger files compared to newer movies of the same size (while the perceived picture quality of the newer flicks is usually much better). Is there any difference in the transfer process from analog s...

Re: How come no DTS or 5.1?

Then I read about eac3to being able to convert DTS to AC3. Is it worth to take the extra step just to use AC3 passthrough instead of AAC? If your receiver can decode AC3 5.1 and not AAC 5.1, then yes. I believe eac3to is using libav to decode the DTS and encode it into AC3, unless you buy the Nero ...

Re: How come no DTS or 5.1?

I have a very similar question: I used AnyDVD HD to rip a BD to disk. When I tried to encode the main feature (.m2ts) with Handbrake, it complained "No valid source found". I used Tsmuxer to "downconvert" to the DTS core from the DTS-HD track, and Handbrake happily accepted the resulting m2ts file. ...

Input/output error copying a HB-generated file

Hi, I experienced a very strange issue today: After encoding a couple of movies with HB 0.9.4 with different settings, I finally settled for High Profile preset. This works great, but there is one output file which cannot be copied. It plays fine, and I even re-encoded the movie (using the same sett...

Re: High Profile Preset - x264 options

Many thanks – I should have known that the profile settings were not chosen for no reason.

I'll stick with the default High Profile settings then.

Thanks again,
Jan

High Profile Preset - x264 options

Hi, the High Profile is supposed to have "all the bells and whistles" of the H.264 codec, but some of the parameters which enhance the output quality (at least according to their descriptions) are disabled: - Pyramidal B-Frames - Motion Estimation Method: Uneven Multi-Hexagon (uses Hexagon instead) ...

Re: Old Apple TV Preset vs. New Apple TV Preset

Sorry: By "smoother" I mean that most surfaces (i.e. human skin) look more natural (they exhibit less pixelation) in the 0.92/ABR with 2 passed variant. And are you comparing still frames or motion video? Because still frame comparisons are pointless. I compated short scenes following the first fra...

Re: Old Apple TV Preset vs. New Apple TV Preset

"Less smooth"? What does this even *mean*? And saying "output is a little brighter" without mentioning what video player you use is pointless. Sorry: By "smoother" I mean that most surfaces (i.e. human skin) look more natural (they exhibit less pixelation) in the 0.92/ABR with 2 passed variant. I c...

Re: Old Apple TV Preset vs. New Apple TV Preset

Just like the original poster, I used the AppleTV preset in Handbrake 0.92 (with 2 passes/turbo first pass enabled). Now I encoded The Two Towers (LOTR) with the new AppleTV preset in 0.93, and again with the same preset and the quality level raised to 65%. In both cases, the new preset's output is ...
