Re: Apple TV 2
Following a sojourn into ATV1 + XBMC + CHD I went back and ran a couple more 720p tests on the ATV2 in an attempt to find some practical decoding limits. I say “practical” because I’m sure there’s a way to kill the ATV2 with constant quality encodes at RF 10 or something equally ridiculous but that ...

Re: Apple TV 2
As for 720p content, the last transcode I ran was the following: HandBrake High Profile, 720p loose, RF 18, and the following x264 options: b-adapt=2:rc-lookahead=50:me=umh:subq=10:trellis=2:aq-strength=1.1:psy-rd=1.2,0.10:ref=4:bframes=4 This plays smooth as silk in all my test videos. I’m trying t...

Re: Apple TV 2
Firelight, I tried your suggestion of transcoding both scenes with the Apple Universal preset. Even without CABAC or B-Frames there were dropped frames. Now, these encodes were also the largest yet (the Planet Earth scene was 22 Mb/s average) so maybe that had something to do with it. It’s weird, wh...

Re: Apple TV 2
I’m continuing to test with 1080p encodes. This new ATV is extremely graceful at dropping frames, there’s none of the choppiness one finds when pushing the ATV1 beyond its limits. Often, you can only see the frame drops in your periphery vision. I know that my girlfriend did not notice it until I sh...

Re: Apple TV 2
AugioMendoza, Yes, the AppleTV 2 (2010) can stream 1080p content. And, yes, the AppleTV 2 could be smart enough to output to the highest possible resolution. It occurs to me the original AppleTV needed the option for resolution in Settings because it also had Component video output which would not b...

Re: Apple TV 2
Like Terc I’m running a variety of tests on my ATV2 to find its limits. One very interesting thing I’ve found so far is that iTunes accepts 1080p content and it can be streamed to the ATV2. In fact, the only thing I’ve been able to get the ATV to stumble on has been 1080p material. With the original...

Re: AppleTV Advanced Settings (Post PsyRDO)
Indeed, as has been pointed out, weightp does not work on the stock AppleTV regardless of the material (be it SD or HD). There isn't just excessive blockiness but the picture can be completely washed out color-wise for periods of time, it's a complete disaster. My test was to see if Perian's decoder...

Re: AppleTV Advanced Settings (Post PsyRDO)
I was discouraged about the AppleTV's latest abortion, read: weightp fail, and talked with Dynaflash about it in IRC for a bit. We covered a few issues but principally the need for a more efficient h264 encoder for the ATV's version of QuickTime. I recalled that Perian, installed on a Mac, will use ...

Re: Crash With Logging Pref. & Target Location is Out of Space
Dynaflash, I'm not suggesting HandBrake try to figure out if there's enough room for an encode. Obviously, that's impossible for the reason you give — there's no way to know what size the final encode will be. I'm merely suggesting that when the target has 0 bytes free that Handbrake make that annou...

Crash With Logging Pref. & Target Location is Out of Space
I would be surprised if this hasn't been mentioned before but I did not see it listed in the TRAC nor did I see it doing a search for "space" in the Bugs forum. The bug is very simple and doesn't really require a verbose log or many of the specifics jbrjake requests in the "READ ME be...

Re: ATV 2.2: What you can and can't do with multiple soundtracks
kiran_mk2, I don't believe soft-subtitles are going to be available anytime soon, they're not even on the roadmap until version 0.10.0. The audio track naming should be coming to the GUI soon, however, now that it's available at the command line and that's something I'm looking forward to myself. -B...

Re: ATV 2.2: What you can and can't do with multiple soundtracks
djdeejay, Back before AppleTV Take 2 there were many discussions about how to insert AC3 (Dolby Digital 5.1) into AppleTV compatible videos. I covered the options at the time in this post: http://forum.handbrake.fr/viewtopic.php?p=9897#p9897 That thread in general covered all the thoughts and attemp...

Re: Per-track audio configuration.
Tiny bug in the Audio Track UI on the Mac side: If you select an AC3 source HandBrake properly greys out the Samplerate and Bitrate options for that source. However, any subsequent changes to other sources will de-grey (or, make available) the Samplerate and Bitrate on your original AC3 source. Furt...

Re: Can't build x264 anymore? Get yasm.
Thank you, mac_man_ad, that worked like a charm! To anyone else who may have difficulty with this on an Intel based Mac let me supplement jbrjake's instructions (some of this may be overkill but it worked for me). 1. download and unzip the source code jbrjake links to 2. open terminal and navigate t...

Re: Can't build x264 anymore? Get yasm.
Running a Mac Pro I was having just such a build problem. I downloaded the yasm source you linked and built it successfully. Unsure what to do next I just put the yasm binary in the same folder as the nasm binary (/developer/usr/bin). However, I'm still failing to build HandBrake. I'm sure there's a...

loyalty_anchored, I stand corrected on the Con I mentioned in my first option. That's very interesting news about the progress of ATVFiles. And while it would help my situation (if I could just get my AppleTV to boot from my external drive past the Apple logo, dang it) the difficulty of installing p...

josephlew1s, There are a couple of ways at the moment to get true 5.1 audio out of your AppleTV and there are non-trivial caveats to each. If, however, you are comfortable with the 5.0, non-discreet surround provided by Dolby Pro Logic II then you are already good to go. I'll discuss the various opt...

ragboy, I put your DTS_Leader_DTSWAV.mov and DTS_Leader_stereo.mp4 files on my AppleTV and played them through my receiver (Onkyo TX-SR674). The stereo track played as expected but, unfortunately, the DTS track was just static. I guess the receiver couldn't figure out it was a DTS encode. Incidental...

I attempted to encode three movies yesterday with a build from ~9am CST yesterday (12th). Two were MacTheRipper rips on my harddrive and one was to be ripped/encoded from the DVD drive. All three movies were to be encoded at an average bitrate of 2,700kbps in full anamorphic video with two passes. A...

I believe we're exclusively discussing storage options for an AppleTV server that streams content. Since the AppleTV's file bitrate bandwidth maxes out at 5mbps (though you can push it near 6mbps) and you can only attach up to 5 AppleTV's to a streaming server the maximum amount of data all the Appl...

maurj, Your 5_1_DOLBY_dpl2_160kbps.m4v loads in iTunes, streams to my AppleTV, and plays in a Dolby PL II 5.0 mode as expected on my receiver. Great, great work! Also, all my movies have been encoded with AAC 5.1 at a bitrate of 256 or higher so I also concur that the 160kbps of the previous files w...
