Re: Auto Crop...?
occasionally I'll encounter a title where most of the images are slightly corrupted with a grey wash... this throws off the edge detection for autocropping. In this case, you'll need to manually adjust the cropping yourself. Ah ha, I have noticed that... sounds like that's exactly my issue. However...

Re: Auto Crop...?
I guess I'm still a little confused Ted... so is removing the black bars an anomaly to 2.40:1 features? Because on V for Vendetta and Watchmen this happened... but on my other blurays it has left black bars. For instance, when setting crop to Auto I get these two settings Tropic Thunder Source: 1920...

Auto Crop...?
Hey all. So I've been ripping all my blurays into MKV files by using MakeMKV and then running that resulting file through Handbrake to knock them down to reasonable file sizes. During this process I have stumbled upon another question... I have Cropping set to Automatic, but what exactly does that d...

Re: BluRay artefacting advice
Huh, well isn't that curious. I was using VLC but booted it up in Quicktime X and that section actually looked better, the scrambled web was gone (although the sky in the background was a tiny bit more 'striped' where the colors fade from dark to light). Didn't realize it could be how the player was...

BluRay artefacting advice
Hey all, working on shrinking my bluray MKVs from MakeMKV to a more reasonable size with handbrake, and noticed some artefacting issues with my conversion of Coraline... was looking for any ripping advice on improving this. Here's my encode log: HandBrake Activity Log for /Users/Bryan/Desktop/Corali...

Re: Bluray encoding + DTS sound question
Hey guys thanks for all the help... it had to be the DTS-HD that was messing things up. When I looked at the log from before it was a disaster list of 1000 fail errors, haha. So I went with the 3/2+1 track and just got a great rip of Moon down from the original 20GB to 4.25GB, and that was with an R...

Re: Bluray encoding + DTS sound question
It's the lossless track that causes the problems. Ok got it, thanks. Come to think of it, I believe my MKV rip I did above that muxed all scrambled was using the DTS-HD track, maybe that's what messed up the whole thing? I'll try again with the 5.1 later (and still toss up my log of the other just ...

Re: Bluray encoding + DTS sound question
Thanks Rodeo... so when I pull up MakeMKV I see this: Video - Mpeg4 [ ] Audio - DTS-HD Losless ....[ ] Audio - DTS 3/2+1 Do I check both of those boxes or just the latter? And I'll look for that log tonight on the one that had scrambled video (oh and I'm on a nightly, though it's a few weeks old so ...

Re: Bluray encoding + DTS sound question
High Profile preset, change the container to MKV, disable the filters, reduce the quality to RF 23, and drop the AAC track. Sweet thanks mduell, just one clarifying question. Disable filters as in switch detelecine and decomb to off, correct? I did not do this last time I chose the MKV container, c...

Re: Bluray encoding + DTS sound question
Post your encode logs, which are all stored to disk as explained in the announcement at the top of every forum. For the Mac version, they are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/Handbrake/EncodeLogs Missed that footnote! Thanks for the heads up, just assumed they were deleted each time I quit t...

Bluray encoding + DTS sound question
Hey all, I've used handbrake for years for DVD encoding, but now am working on learning the ropes for bluray encodes on my iMac... one big question right now-- I'm trying to create quality 1080p w/ surround sound rips that are in the 5GB range to play on my Acer HTPC running XBMC (so I have no need ...

Handbrake finalizing encode too early
Hey all... posting a new thread with activity log re: Rodeo's suggestion. Here's the story: For my Planet Earth blurays when I have tried to rip the M2TS files for Seasonal Forests (00009) and Ocean Deep (00014), handbrake stops approximately halfway through the encode and the muxes the file so I en...

Re: Handbrake Quits on certain files but not on others...
For my Planet Earth blurays when I have tried to rip the M2TS files for Seasonal Forests (00009) and Ocean Deep (00014), handbrake stops approximately halfway through the encode and the muxes the file so I end up with a functioning MP4, but it is only about 22 minutes long instead of 50. All the oth...

Re: Just another quality setting thread
Deep end? Haha... my settings too refined for your tastes? :P Gotta have a good rip if you're running a 1080p 50" TV... (well ok, I'm only on a 42" 720, but it's getting upgraded soon). And my 2 TB hard drive is almost 2/3rds full already... crazy how quick storage can vanish with video. B...

And since people get confused by the RF and percentage thing easily, I'll just say now, don't bother going below 17.

Re: Handbrake finishes conversion, ITunes can't open
Oh yeah, those settings could use tweaking for sure. Where did you get those to start with? Are you encoding for playback on TV or other devices? For one thing, as you might read other places around here, the "percentage" for quality is a useless number and I believe is getting eliminated....

Re: 2 Audio Track question
Thanks Ted, that definitely helps. I think for future 2.0 and 1.0 sources I will discard the passthru as well... no reason to take up the extra space when the mixdown should be sufficient. So I think I solved my second question through a few tests. I tried to rip a chapter of a 5.1 movie with only a...

Re: Handbrake finishes conversion, ITunes can't open
Haha, yes. You must check that box if your file ends up being more than 4GB. That is undoubtedly your problem (and a rather frequent one around here it seems... sometimes I wonder if the devs should just enable that by default). On a side note, what the heck settings are you using that is giving you...

Re: blue ray makes handbrake crash
So you're using the CLI and not the GUI? I've only ever used the GUI, so my only advice there would be to ask the obvious question, was the "Large File Size" checkbox checked? I'm not sure how that is handled in CLI.

Re: Size settings for 720p
Oh right. My bad, I didn't think that one through very long and just tested a Planet Earth source which is full 16:9... but if you're dealing with a wider-widescreen, like 2.35:1, then the story is different. I think you'd still do the same thing, convert the width down to 1280? But I'm honestly not...

Re: CoreAudio or faac ???
I was experimenting with encoding using the other presets and Universal and iPod Legacy encodes will transfer to my iPod. Normal and High Profile will not. TBH, they all the clips look exactly the same quality to each other when played in iTunes and to each other on the iPod. Can you tell me if Uni...

Re: Size settings for 720p
If your source is 1920x1080 and you choose Anamorphic Loose and then scale down the Width to 1280 you should have an output of 1280x720... I just tested with one of my BluRay sources and got it to work. Not sure why you're getting 528... (that should be 944x528...) Don't know if this is helpful, may...

2 Audio Track question
This has maybe been asked before, and if so, my apologies. I'm just curious, on the Universal and Apple TV presets, handbrake defaults to having 2 audio tracks. The first is an AAC Mixdown and the second is an AC3 Passthru. Since this is how the devs set it up, I also made my Custom DVD preset the s...

Re: Just another quality setting thread
As most will say around here, it'll come down to personal preference. But if it's of any help, this is the most recent setting I have used for the 400+ DVDs I've been ripping the last few months. CQRF - 17.5 Anamorphic - Loose / Detelecine - Default / Decomb - Default Advanced String: b-pyramid=1:b-...
