Sorry for the delay - this should be the successful encode of the 'misbehaving' episode from my first post
https://pastebin.com/LMqkDL9n
As mentioned, this encoded and played back fine on a different Mac (same Handbrake version)

Re: Scrambled video on some episodes from DVD
The ripped MKV files played back fine.
The plot thickens though - I tried encoding on my wife's MacBook Air (same Handbrake version) and the encodes were fine!

Scrambled video on some episodes from DVD
I've been having some issues converting an R2 DVD of Bagpuss to h264. I have tried direct from the disc and extracting with MakeMKV first. The MKV files created by MakeMKV play back with no issues in VLC. Now some of the episodes encoded fine (from disc and MKV files) but some appeared scrambled/blo...

Another quick bump - the new update of VLC 2.0.2 correctly plays back DTS in mp4

Re: Apple TV3 Optical
I've literally just noticed the same thing (I upgraded from ATV1 to ATV3). Sorted the problem by going to Settings->Audio&Video->Dolby Digital->On. Now when a video is played, press and hold play/pause until the menu comes up, then go to audio tab. The AC3 option should now be selectable (unhelp...

Re: Standard DVD Rip for AT3?
All the attention seems to have moved on to BluRay, but I'm still plugging away with DVDs for my ATV3. Is high profile still the best choice here?

Re: HandBrake 0.9.6 Discussion Thead
Quick question about DTS-in-mp4. The release notes state: DTS Passthru to MP4 container (in addition to MKV) (supported by e.g. VLC, MPlayer) I encoded a chapter of a DTS film with track 1 AAC, track 2 AC3, track 3 DTS using a nightly build from around November last year. Using v2 of VLC the track p...

Re: Handbrake Friendly Media Extenders
I feel your pain on the lack of meta-data compliance on media extenders. It would seem like a simple tweak to check for internal meta data and only then head to the internet if it isn't found. Sadly it doesn't stop there - I was looking at XBMC to process my Handbrake m4v files. I could just about c...

Re: DTS-HD passthru w/Apple TV 2?
Just a quick bump - I've finally gotten around to converting a bit of DTS film - m4v file has AAC, AC3, DTS and AAC commentary track. VLC (v 1.1.12) plays all except the DTS track (as expected). The file is accepted and playable in iTunes (again, the DTS option is not available, but it plays the oth...

Re: DTS-HD passthru w/Apple TV 2?
I don't have my ATV to hand at the moment. If we were to encode a file with audio track 1 as AAC stereo, track 2 as AC3 and track 3 as DTS and feed it into iTunes would the various Apple devices just not play it at all or would they play the AAC and AC3 tracks?

Re: Constant Quality recommendation for Simpson's series?
I tend to use 22-23 for source material like this. For simple animation, even 24-25 may be ok. I try and aim for under 200 MB / episode with the odd episode higher and the odd episode lower.

[Invalid] automatic removal of "phantom" chapters
A lot of DVDs seem to feature a phantom chapter at the end of the feature which tend to last under 5 seconds and contain no information (audio or video). It's fairly annoying yo let one of these slip through and end up with a useless, unnamed chapter. Is there any chance Handbrake could get an optio...

Re: Foreign Language Audio Track not available on Apple TV
Really? I could have sworn I was able to encode multiple langauges from my Miyazaki collection, keeping AC3 for both languages. I'll have to take a look at them when I get home as I probably didn't verify that everything worked correctly. AAC English AC3 English AAC Japanese AC3 Japanese Yep, I did...

Re: AppleTV2, Subtitles & Audio Tracks
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1033694&highlight=commentary Looks like the issue is that the ATV2 isn't detecting the names of the alternate tracks. So if you have labelled the tracks "ProLogic II", "AC3" and "Commentary" they would all appear as "...

Re: AppleTV2, Subtitles & Audio Tracks
I don't have an ATV2, but I've heard that multiple audio and subtitles aren't working on the new model even through they work correctly on the original model. I'm a bit surprised Apple hasn't sorted this out as these were features they added to the original model in the 2.x updates.

Re: iTunes + 1080p + AC3 + Apple TV 2 + Projector.
Yes, an update from Apple. I too don't think iTunes will get 1080p rentals for a few years yet (maybe when the successor to h264 arrives and files get smaller/more bandwidth available). However, forcing a 720p-only output is a bit limiting - and possibly an area where iOS hasn't yet been modified fr...

Re: iTunes + 1080p + AC3 + Apple TV 2 + Projector.
I know there was a lot of tests carried out with 1080p as soon as the ATV2 came out, but I haven't seen any results from testing after the recent software update which seemed to cure most of the 720p frame skipping. Also, I wonder if an update to enable native 1080p output would help (to stop 'wasti...

I can't speak for all digital copies, but most tend to be SD (obviously) and only have stereo sound.

Re: DTS in an M4V container, ever?
Forgive me if I'm being a bit dumb, but if Apple have set out a standard for using DTS and DTS-MA in mp4/m4v, shouldn't that imply that the AppleTV and iTunes/Quicktime etc can play DTS in mp4 but it's just that noone other than DTS knows the correct way to embed the audio in the file. I can't imagi...

Re: DTS in an M4V container, ever?
I guess it's up to Apple. I can't see them moving away from Dolby Digital to be honest - I can't see the financial benefit of paying to licence the DTS codec and paying for the extra bandwidth that the increased file size would need. The only way I could see is if Apple move to support the lossless ...

http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/28/the-next-apple-tv-revealed-cloud-storage-and-iphone-os-on-tap/ Don't know when it would launch - maybe at the September event? Or perhaps once the deals with the studios are done. One thing I really hope is that allows network storage and that it doesn't need iTune...

Re: Apple tv preset= for 2009 ipod touches? Is the true?
The 8 GB 2009 model is actually the same as the 2008 model - it was only the 32 and 64 GB models that were upgraded to the 3GS internals so, like the iphones before the 3GS, the 8 GB ipod touch model remains unable to playback ATV preset encodes.

Re: Commentary tracks on AppleTV/iPhone
Using Subler on the created m4v files you can rename the audio tracks (ie from "stereo" to "Director's commentary") and also tick the box next to the AC3 audio track which then marks it as the default track.

Re: iTunes Extra....
The more I think about this, the more I think this is more an extra feature for a program like Subler or MetaX rather than Handbrake. Handbrake can rip all the extras to separate m4v files (using the preview to identify which extra is which). Then in the tagging program, add all the files (film and ...
