Re: Apple TV supports Dolby Digital 5.1 / AC3

What you have to remember is the DTS file you downloaded has been re-encoded to a WAV file, which the Apple TV will play. At the moment it will not, unless hacked, play a direct DTS stream. So, yes, you could play a DTS file without hacking the box, but to get that point you have to hack the origin...

Re: Mac OS X tools for dd-wav conversion

I did a bit of digging around in the DGMPGDec source and I at least dug up the function which calculates the delay (or at least, the delay which appears in the file name when the project's saved). It's in the dgindex148src folder within the main source zip file, in the getbit.cpp file: int PTSDiffe...

New dd-wav tools for Mac OS X

A new version of the dd-wav conversion tools for Mac OS X is available. I've fixed the problem with the center channel being in the right speaker (actually worked around is a better description). With the previous version, all of the channels were shifted. Instead of being L / C / R / SL / SR / LFE,...

Re: Mac OS X tools for dd-wav conversion

I fixed the sync issues in my procedures, and have an update at the bottom. http://www.garcias.com/TheGarcias/Dad%27s%20Blog/9E500240-D005-499D-9E44-74B50E96FE4E.html It involves yet another windows app, but I don't know any other app that will demux ac3 and tell you the delay. That's good news. Th...

Re: Mac OS X tools for dd-wav conversion

They work like a charm, except that in the two ac3 files I attempted to convert (one from a clip of a TV show from my cable box, the other from a DVD Rip [Stranger than Fiction]), it appears that the right and center channels get swapped at some point in the process--the center channel (narration) ...

Mac OS X tools for dd-wav conversion

OK - here they are... tools to convert raw 48kHz AC3 files to 44.1kHz dd-wav encoded wav files for Mac OS X. http://www.macseven.com/appletv/e71_AppleTV_ddwav_tools.dmg Thanks to randyharris for hosting them. There are two utilities in the package. The first is a modified version of ffmpeg that can ...

Mac OS X tools for dd-wav conversion

I have gotten a set of tools running on Mac OS X that will resample 48kHz AC-3 raw streams to 44.1kHz and then convert that to a dd-wav. So now all of the steps needed to get Apple TV to play back 5.1 AC-3 audio can be performed in Mac OS X instead of Windows. However I need a place to host the two ...

Re: AC-3 playback info

Actually, the .mov format can support any format. It essentially just states that it has n tracks, and their formats, and then proceeds to have file locations for samples along with time and duration information. There is nothing in .mov which limits it from carrying AC3 data. I stick AC3 data in ....

Here's what concerns me: 1) #4 ... which container will hold that elixir, and what would it take for AppleTV to not just recognize/accept it (a Perian-type solution?) but of course also deliver it unscathed out the S/PDIF ? And then there's iTunes and metadata to consider. So far, I believe only .m...

AC-3 playback info

There seems to be some confusion as to how AC-3 playback works and why the Apple TV has problems. To understand these issues, we need to look at two components: Get the AC-3 stream into the Apple TV Transfer the AC-3 stream from Apple TV to the stereo / TV during playback Each of these has their own...

DD-WAV file format?

I'm interested in starting to look at what it would take to add support for directly converting AC-3 5.1 tracks to an embedded dd-wav track in the final video file. There are a couple of PC / Windows utilities that will convert an .ac3 file to a dd-wav file and the rest of the process is fairly unde...

Re: Problem with presets

[*]Instead of editing the raw preset, you can just click on the "Picture Settings" button each time after applying the custom preset. Then click the "Close" button on the picture window. That should allow the actual picture settings to be applied. ... I don't *think* that worked...

Re: Problem with presets

I've had a look at the code and the built-in AppleTV preset uses a setting designed to allow it to use the max picture size from the DVD at the time the preset was applied instead of the one when the preset was created. Unfortunately there's no UI to enable that setting for any custom presets. Err....

Problem with presets

I've found a problem using a customized preset instead of the built-in HB-AppleTV preset. When following the instructions above for creating a customized preset for Apple TV, the new preset ends up inheriting the width, height and crop sizes from the current DVD. As a result, when the preset is appl...

Any chance that any of the supported video container files support an audio stream that can contain DTS? Since the Apple TV can output DTS over the optical S/PDIF interface when embedded as an uncompressed 16-bit stereo signal, in theory, it should be able to do so while playing back video. But that...
