whatever you do, don't leave framerate same as source as that tends to make choppy movies! i had to re-encode a bunch of stuff for that reason alone If DVDs are 24fps and movies are too then leaving same as source for movies would be ok no? I was doing the deinterlacing option for tv shows but it w...

ipod preset creating files that won't transfer from itunes

I use handbrake 0.8.5b1(2007042301) on a mac mini intel. I am ripping the Live8 4 DVD set with mac the ripper and then converting with handbrake using the ipod preset. The only change I am making is putting 2-pass encoding and deinterlace. The DVD1,2 and 3 won't transfer to the ipod The DVD4 transfe...

Yes, well I haven't bothered to rip more than a couple of my DVD's. That's because I'm waiting for the ultimate solution, I want chapters with the original name. And of course multiple subtitles with the option to turn it on or off. We'll probably see that soon and also probably cheaper and cheaper...

My backup is the DVD disc :D I really would'nt want to re-rip 100+ DVDs Maybe I'd like to re-rip all my CDs. Some of them are 128, some 192, some 320 and a couple are vbr around 200. If I had to start from scratch I'd rip everything to 192. It's good enough that I don't hear a difference with highe...

I think that wether you use the ipod's screen or not is irrelevant. The ipod CPU just won't play anything above h.264 1500kbps or mpeg-4 2500kbps. You will get better results with mpeg-4 if you go above 1500 kbps. Also I never tried it but I doubt that the ipod will play anamorphic files even if you...

Does this means that h.264 is a better compression than h.264 ipod at the same bitrate?

Does this mean it's front row friendly too? If so how do I know when to use anamorphic and when not to use it? Is there a FAQ or sticky on this somewhere?

Thanks.

The ghosting is probably there on the ipod screen too but the screen is so small that it does'nt show as much. To get great results that will work on the ipod(assuming ipod 5g) you will need to rip at close to 1500bps h.264 or 2000-2500bps mpeg-4. I used to connect my ipod to my 50" TV and that...

When you start talking about storage for a media library full of movies, even well compressed x264 movies, a true backup simply isn't a viable option for home users. What I do is that I always buy drives in pair. So I got two 500GB external drives instead of just one. But if you really like swappin...

Yes firewire-400 is faster than usb-2. I have both and I still use the usb-2 simply because it's fast enough for anything I do. Ripping a DVD to HD. DVD is the bottleneck. Compressing DVD to mp4. CPU is the bottleneck. So if you don't really need fast disk access you may as well buy a cheaper usb-2 ...

Really look at the resolution before clicking "start&qu

I read the sticky on how to encode for ipod5.5 but maybe a little too fast. I assumed that by setting x264 and x264(ipod) it would make a file that would work on the iPod. Well it turns out that auto-resize to 640x480 was turned off in my preferences so I spent 2-3 days making files that won't work....

Very few DVD videos need to be deinterlaced. The only one I found up to now have been the "baby einstein" DVD series and the "Asterix et cleopatre" movie.

I usually do everything with deinterlacing and just check it when there is visible problems on the resulting file.

Is there a way to "auto-set" aspect ratio on windo

When I use handbrake on OS X it will set the aspect ratio for me in the h.264(ipod) setting. The windows version does not do this.

Is there a way to make it do it?
Or if not if these a simple table of which resolution to use for given aspect ratios? 1.33,178.etc?

Thanks

Why no maximum bitrate on h.264?

Most of my DVDs have been copied to my drive using mactheripper and then converted to .mp4 with handbrake .7 mpeg4 2000kbps. The DVDs are still on the disk and now that handbrake can do ipod h.264 of more than 768kbps it becomes very interesting. So what would be the best setting to have a file that...
