Thanks, Scott. I will suggest upgrading, but we are a bit dated ourselves and don't care so much about stuff like that! Especially when we don't use it as our usual browser.

Just to make it clear, when I start the installer I get this message:

Handbrake cannot be installed on systems with Internet Explorer version smaller than 6.0

That's why I'm asking why IE 6 is necessary.
