Re: iPhone can now use Apple TV Preset
I just picked up the 64GB version of the 3rd gen Ipod touch and dropped a recent rip to it to see if it would work. I ripped the full screen version of "An American Tail" and cabac was enabled. Here is a summary of the rest of the settings: ref=5:me=umh:b-adapt=2:trellis=0:bframes=6:direct...

question about x264 options
does using bime=1:b-rdo=1
have any value in .93 and the latest svn's?
I have used them in the past starting in the .91 days and they helped on quality vs. size then. I was wondering since there have been significant improvements since those days.
BTW, kudos for a great tool.

Use the apple tv preset and check the decomb option.
See if you are happy with the results.

Re: How do you handle TV shows in your library?
I use MediaPortal instead of Apple TV.
The TV Series plugin pulls information from thetvdb.com.
Another poster already mention the tvdb.
A great thing about it is that you can update the info if need be.

I was hoping to automate the commercial removal/marking and pass off the output to handbrake with something like comskip.

Commercial Free TV?
Here is my desired outcome. I want to take my saved .ts files that my HTPC (MediaPortal) records from an ATSC source and convert them with handbrake to a much more manageable size, minus the commercials. I run on Windows XP Pro. I've tried MCEBuddy and haven't been pleased with the encodes. It depen...

for your goals, the film and tv presets are appropriate. The only modification that you may want to do is change from average bit rate to constant quality. A setting of .62 would meet your goal more than likely. Try it and see what you think.

Re: Improve quality of PS3 Preset?
The high profile option will take substantially longer due to the use of b-frames, pyramiding b-frames and other options. The constant quality option for the PS3 will work in most instances. As stated elsewhere in the forums, .62 should be sufficient quality for most purposes. Others will say .59 is...

Re: Encode Settings for an Apple TV, etc
Since file size is not an issue, go with the Apple TV preset. Adjust the quality rate to your taste based on the results (i.e. if the default .59 doesn't suit you then bump it up to .63 or .65). Keep in mind on CQR anything above .7 will give you huge files with negligible improvement in most cases ...

Re: .93's cqr and 2 pass encoding
Fair enough. I am guessing 2 pass since it did 2 passes. I saw the same behavior in the CL version.
What is the constraint in constant quality that inhibits multi pass encoding. Excuse the ignorance, just trying to learn.

.93's cqr and 2 pass encoding
I use handbrake on Windows XP SP3. Previously on .92 I could specify a quality level ( .65 or something similar depending on source) and still use 2 pass encoding. I notice that in .93 if I choose a quality level the 2 pass encoding option is not available. I realize that it previously borked the jo...

Re: Improve quality of PS3 Preset?
Additionally it looks like on the advanced options you can set references to 3 and enable mixed references as well as bime.
ref=3:mixed-refs=1:bime=1
This will definitely increase encode times. However it isn't anything outrageous.

Re: Improve quality of PS3 Preset?
The first thing to try is to enable 2 pass encoding and using turbo on the first pass. That shouldn't break anything and will improve the video quality. It will have little to no effect on file size.

Re: converting help for ps3, xbox, and zune
The good news. All the devices you mentioned support H.264 in an Mpeg4 container with a .M4V extension. The bad news is that the settings that will look good on your PS3 or Xbox 360 will not work on the portable players. While the settings that will work on the portable players will work on the game...

I have a q6600 based Windows PC and a standard encode for a 2 hour movie runs about 3 hours. "The Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe" took just over 3.5 hours and is about 2 GB.

I guess since no one had anything to add, your's is the consensus answer.
I will look forward to greater flexibility in future releases and enjoy the heck out of the current release.
