Re: XBMC on Apple TV

cvk_b, I just wanted to thank you for these settings. I switched to XBMC on my Leopard HTPC and have been laboriously re-ripping my dvd collection (I should have saved the rips last time...am this time...) and running them through handbrake again. Your settings have given me files that have amazing ...

Re: Q6600 2.4GHz to X3320 2.5GHz upgrade - encodes slower

Just a quick update. Shiny new motherboard arrived today. With a proper air cooler and a replacement board, I got 30.710022 fps with the same source and settings as above. So the X3320 definitely performs better than the Q6600 even with a smaller cache.

Thanks again for your help TedJ. :)

Re: Q6600 2.4GHz to X3320 2.5GHz upgrade - encodes slower

Nope, it's all my fault. I went with a custom HTPC cooler...and I should have looked at the 15 pieces required to mount it on my board and thrown it out. Awh well...I'm happy that I'm replacing a $120 motherboard instead of a $350 processor. The motherboard did the right thing and didn't let my proc...

Re: Q6600 2.4GHz to X3320 2.5GHz upgrade - encodes slower

Hi Ted; Thanks for the reply...but the issue has turned out to be more elementary then that. The X3320 does outperform the Q6600 in general (according to my research at least) but the problem turned out to be a god-awful heatsink. Long story short, the motherboard is intelligent enough to ratchet do...

Re: Q6600 2.4GHz to X3320 2.5GHz upgrade - encodes slower

I forgot to mention I'm running OSX Leopard 10.5.6 with all current patches installed. This is a retail install of Leopard as well. Not a hackintosh type install.

Q6600 2.4GHz to X3320 2.5GHz upgrade - encodes slower

I'm stumped. I just upgraded my machine from a Core2Quad 6600 at 2.4ghz to a Xeon X3320 at 2.5ghz. All the other components in the system are identical. I'm encoding "House of Flying Daggers" to h.264 in mp4. I figured that putting in a Penryn based processor, with a faster bus, new instru...

Re: AppleTV and your movie collection

I'm in the process of converting 400+ DVD's to ATV. Storage is provided by a 1TB USB drive attached to my ATV 2.0.2 that's been patchkeyed. I use Sapphire as my media player. I don't synchronize any of my movies through iTunes. I only use iTunes for my music collection. Movies I move after converted...

Re: eSata AppleTV Mod

Hmm...good to know! I'm going to build a dual socket 5410 xeon box for my encoding...I need every bit of horsepower I can muster since I've got about 400ish DVD's to convert...and I'm currently using XP x64...so I'm debating either switching to OSX (though I doubt it'll support the server board I'll...

Re: eSata AppleTV Mod

heh, fall backs are always good. Far too many people do things thinking "it's a good idea" without thinking about what will happen in the worst case...It's the shiny syndrome...I must admit it's afflicted me more than once... ;) And no...though technically it IS possible to boot from USB (...

Re: eSata AppleTV Mod

AH! I gotcha. If all you're looking for is to move the iTunes collection to the external drive and get both the ATV and iTunes to recognize the larger capacity, you just need to move /mnt/Media to your USB device, which is mounted in /mnt/Scratch/Volumes/USB1T and then symlink /mnt/Scratch/Volumes/U...

Re: eSata AppleTV Mod

You're right, USB2 is slower than ATA100 or (e)SATA, however this is one of those cases where it doesn't need to be. I've hooked a powered USB hub and an external 1TB hard drive to my ATV. Works like a hot damn. Now, if we look where the bottle neck is, it's not the USB interface. The max bitrate th...
