Just a quick update. Shiny new motherboard arrived today. With a proper air cooler and a replacement board, I got 30.710022 fps with the same source and settings as above. So the X3320 definitely performs better than the Q6600 even with a smaller cache.

Nope, it's all my fault. I went with a custom HTPC cooler...and I should have looked at the 15 pieces required to mount it on my board and thrown it out. The X3320 does outperform the Q6600 in general (according to my research at least) but the problem turned out to be a god-awful heatsink. I forgot to mention I'm running OSX Leopard 10.5.6 with all current patches installed. This is a retail install of Leopard as well. Not a hackintosh type install.
