Says in the wiki entry for DRC (https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/DynRangeCompression) that '1.0 uses the compression hints embedded in the AC3 track.'
would i be right in thinking this means setting the DRC to 1 will make the resulting aac file the same as the original ac3 file volume wise?

Re: dolby digital to acc volume change
I can post a log tomorrow, but to be honest I thought this wasn't a one off encode issue and that it was because the DRC is always removed by default when converting from ac3 to aac?
Thanks

Re: best settings for iphone 4 and atv 1st gen?
If you're targeting both devices, you should use the "AppleTV" preset. The iPhone 4 is a more capable device, so you'll have to target the lowest common denominator. And yes, leave on decomb and deinterlace. i assume the apple tv preset will be very good quality for sd anyway right? is it...

Subler can be used to add subtitles to movies post encode. http://code.google.com/p/subler/ I tried adding an srt sub to the m4v in subler, but itunes wont play back the file or even add it to its libary after the srt has been added...works in Quicktime though, which is strange... bug with itunes?
