File size
I am using Handbrake 0.9.9 x86_64. Out of curiosity, I wonder if anyone can explain why, whatever the kind of video content, using the iPad preset I always see 1080p FLV files converted to an MP4 that is larger than the original FLV, file whereas picture resolutions of 830 pixels always produce an m...

Re: iPod Touch / iPhone preset
You know perfectly well you meant to be rude. Now I see why you're so sore - you were the author of the preset. Don't worry, your preset is just fine. We all know it's hard to predict the size of one constant quality transcode, but when you try the settings a few times you can get the idea of whethe...

iPod Touch / iPhone preset
Having just updated to 0.9.4 and transcoded a DVD, I find that the built-in preset for iPod Touch / iPhone gives an output file of about 9MB per minute of playing time, so it takes up more room on my device than before. Under previous versions of Handbrake the iPod Touch/iPhone (notwithstanding the ...

Re: Encoding speed versus Quicktime
Your modesty does you credit. Handbrake is lean, efficient and free. Long may it continue.
Cheers.

Encoding speed versus Quicktime
Handbrake is an excellent program at an excellent price.
I'm curious as to how it manages to be so much faster than Quicktime, for example when encoding a movie in H.264 at 720x576 to the same format at 320x240.

Re: Pixel dimensions when encoding for iPod
Thanks for the comment on power consumption. I understand that it would generally be sensible to increase bit rate to do justice to an increase in source and output pixel dimensions, but with a couple of trials I found little improvement beyond 700kbps encoding a DVD at maximum pixel width (anamorph...

Pixel dimensions when encoding for iPod
I am considering encoding a DVD at 700kbps H.264 for the iPod. As far as I know, the apparent quality of the picture on the iPod's screen would not change if the file were encoded at 720 pixels wide as opposed to 320, if all other settings were the same. As the size of the file is determined only by...

Re: b-frames and CABAC
Thanks for your reply. So bframes can make a difference that a fussy viewer like me would notice on a big screen or projection. [Although I'm sure the iPod will become more capable with each release, for now I think I'm getting close to the best I can from that device: 3000kbps - level=30:bframes=0:...

b-frames and CABAC
iPods apparently do not support CABAC or b-frames. I have read that, for a given output quality, CABAC saves about 15% in bit rate compared with CAVLC. So what about b-frames?

Re: Stuttering on Powerbook
Thanks for the input. On the hunch that certain advanced settings can tax the processor more than slightly raising the bit rate, I'll try the "iPod High-Rez" pre-set, and see if the machine copes when I raise the bit rate a little to try and reclaim some of the picture quality. I would rat...

Stuttering on Powerbook
I tried to play back a file on my Powerbook G4 12 inch 1.5 GHz with Nvidea 64MB graphics card and it stuttered where the action was fast and detailed. The encoding was from DVD with the Quicktime preset at 720*576 anamorphic strict. Is my player not powerful enough ? (Does the processor matter more ...

Choice of bit rate in pre-sets
Most of the pre-sets in Handbrake use an average bit rate. What was the reasoning behind those particular rates? In the case of "iPod Low-Rez" the average bit rate is naturally set fairly low as it is sufficient for the small display dimensions of the iPod, so why does the "Quicktime&...
