I'm putting money on the AppleTV using AAC with 5 channels in the .m4v file... same as the movie trailers from apple.com/movies

AAC -> AC3 on the fly over toslink + HDMI

might be able to set this up pretty simply (without writing any code) using Automator... its basically a GUI to applescript.

We are not talking about a AppleTV here... just a macMini loaded with BackRow (appleTV software). MacMini's firewire port works just fine

i did this when it first came out and really, I cant recommend it more. Don't really care if it voids my warranty... its a pretty cheep box.

you should be able to do this pretty simply with apple script. then go to your dvd-prefs and tell it to execute script on dvd detection.... just remember... no one setting is perfect for all dvd's. documentaries and tv shows will very often be interlaced. you would have to decide how you want to han...

BTW: I still don't get why Apple doesn't output 6 Channel AAC as 5.1 PCM over HDMI at the AppleTV. That would be a perfect solution. What is the difference between Apple feeding the audio thru HDMI or out the digital port? bandwidth limitation on optical (if i remember correctly?). AC3 is really on...

Those audio ports are just mini jacks afaik.
