Re: Parameters to use

i had a similar situation a little while back. In my case I also knew the people who'd want to watch it would probably be doing so on their phones, so an mkv with mpeg2 576i in it would probably not be easily playable (not impossible, but necessary instructions too involved for the intended audience...

Re: Videotoolbox quality

I never had any joy out of videotoolbox before; with only a bitrate control you could basically choose between OK-looking and gigantic, or ok-sized and appalling to look at. I tried again with my new M1Pro MacBook Pro. It lets you select a Constant Quality setting now. I usually use the AppleTV 4K p...

Re: HandBrakeCLI 1.3.2 "Invalid preset" on custom preset.

Aha, yep, that workaround works for me too, in my case with the prefix "Devices/". TBH I don't find that usage onerous so I'll likely keep it even after the fix is in (lets you disambiguate same-name presets in different sets). But obvs it does break existing scripts.

HandBrakeCLI 1.3.2 "Invalid preset" on custom preset.

Description of problem or question: I've been using a script for ages to automate transcoding of off-air recordings. To this end I have a custom preset, defined in the GUI. (It's based on the "Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround" preset with minor changes - to use Yadif-Bob deinterlacing and a...

Building on Ubuntu 19.10 (eoan)

I know I know, it isn't out yet, so it wouldn't be supported. Nonetheless, my previous build of 1.2.2 stopped working as of the upgrade of some of its system dependencies this morning so I went to do a rebuild and it failed. For those doing similar, this is how I fixed it. (I'm building from source ...

Re: HandBrake 1.2.0 Discussion Thread

Noticing this: - Improved quality of the default AAC encoder on non-Mac platforms (FFmpeg AAC), no longer experimental Would you say it's improved enough that those of us not on Macs can skip building a version with fdk-aac? I suppose I'm not really asking for an absolute by-the-numbers "is it ...

Re: HandBrake slows down Ubuntu 14.04

Just confirming the same thing. In my case it so happened it's been a while since I last handbraked, and there were other changes to my system I thought it could be; eg: switching from a system with discrete gpu to one with intel hd4600. But sticking a discrete gpu in didn't help. But the workaround...

Re: Decomb Bob and Detelecine

I think I'm finding that on some sources (off-air BBC HD transport streams mostly) I think the decomb filter may be finding false positives, ie: doing decombing where there's no combing or interlacing artifacts that I can see in the original. With decomb-bob this seems to be resulting in sequences w...

Re: Here Comes Bob!

You are right about your comment about de-telecine. If a show/movie is truly shot on film or with an HD camera is a pesudo 24fps film-mode, then the more elegant solution is to de-telecine back to film rate using the pullup filter. In your case however, since it sounds like you're in a PAL country ...

Re: Here Comes Bob!

One suggestion I'd make is that it sounds like the MPEG transport streams that you are capturing off-air may not be in perfect mpeg compliance. In that case, you could try simply running them through the "quickstream fix" option in a program called "VideoREDO". It will bring you...

Re: Here Comes Bob!

I was reading about rachel's problems with the Plex unit (I've been away for 3 weeks and unable to test Bob until now) but the encodes seems to run fine with VFR and Decomb Bob enabled even on detelecined sources. I'm not noticing any problems. Is enabling Decomb Bob on its own the best solution or...

Re: Here Comes Bob!

Of course it was about this point that I got a 3+GHz core i7 x4 box. :-)

And of course *that* takes its sweet time with this work. You just get reconciled to queuing up a few days of encoding jobs and forgetting you have it for a while... :-)

It's that or compromise. As if... :-)

Re: Option to *NOT* preserve metadata when encoding mp4/m4v

forced to workaround, and still wanting .mp4 output from handbrake, and what with having zero luck with subler in the past; what I'd probably do is use mkvtoolnix on the source *before* transcoding with handbrake, to strip the metadata. Except it only works for HD recordings which are exported witho...

Option to *NOT* preserve metadata when encoding mp4/m4v

Problem: I record a bunch of stuff off-air using EyeTV. If I encode them to .mp4 or .m4v using HandBrake the metadata inserted into the file by EyeTV from the programme guide is preserved - including the thumbnail image. This sounds like a good idea, right? Not always: I use Plex for my media player...

Re: Here Comes Bob!

for my part, I'm increasingly of the opinion that most of my problems are because of trying to do a vfr bob-decomb or bob-deinterlace on a telecined source. These are OK with bob-deinterlace with cfr so I have to stick with that. For non-telecined interlaced sources, the only ones I can try at the m...

Re: Here Comes Bob!

Hmm. High Profile Bob-Decomb Constant Frame Rate still gives me moments of judder even though the info pane on plex shows no dropped frames, no abnormal deviation from the frame rate. I suspect there's a glitch in the apparent smoothness of motion in the transition from sequences when it has to bob-...

Re: Here Comes Bob!

HandBrake always timestamps every frame. So timestamps is not your problem. QT on OSX plays VFR m4v files just fine. QT on the same playback machine playing the bob-decomb test does indeed look better, though I'm still seeing occasional juddering. There doesn't seem to be an equivalent option to se...

Can you explain what "Bob" is and where it should be used? Briefly as it might be offtopic but it's new to handbrake so... (and this is my user's-understanding of it) Deinterlacing turns an interlaced video into a progressive one. There are several methods for doing so, Bob is one of them...

Bob's arrived, yay. I have some tests queued up on material I've previously had to do with avisynth on Windows... But in the meantime... Bob as an option on Deinterlace I get. actually let me clarify, the only movie i used 16 for was lord of the rings. every other one was at 18 or 20. average sizes are def over 10gb using 16. I note current nightlies have high framerates (50/60fps etc) available for selection in the video tab, but no new options in the picture settings->filters->interlacing menu. Has this feature been implemented and I'm just too thick to figure out how to use it, or is it just not there yet? :-) Hm, act...
