Re: Locking up during Encoding...

The sample you gave me has a different problem. Fails to scan. So I improved our probing code to fix the scan issue, but I still can't reproduce the problem you are having with it. Are you sure this file causes the problem you are seeing? Here's my log for comparison ./HandBrakeCLI -i ~/Videos/Sampl...

Re: Locking up during Encoding...

Your sample video file seems to be pretty small. Would you be willing to provide it so we can do some debugging?

Re: x264 10-Bit: encode 10 Bit, output 8 Bit?

The point I was making above is that even though the low 2 bits are zero when encoding 8 bit to 10 bit, due to the quantization of coefficients that occurs during encoding the lower 2 bits after decoding will no longer be zeros. It's not a perfectly random dither, but it does provide some visually a...

Re: x264 10-Bit: encode 10 Bit, output 8 Bit?

Also keep in mind that what you are quantizing in the h.264 stream is in the frequency domain. When converting a frame from spacial to frequency domain (and vice versa during playback) there will be rounding errors. The size of the rounding error depends on the number of bits kept in quantization. I...

Re: Reduce Lag From Captured video (?)

HandBrake does not have any facility to manually adjust lag. But it does automatically fix some types of A/V sync issues. The only way to know if your issue is one of the types that can be automatically fixed by HandBrake is to give it a try. Once you've tried it, if you post an activity log of the ...

It should work, if it doesn't it's a bug. I'll move the thread to the bug section.
The plist format on windows was not the same as on Linux and OSX. So importing from old windows releases doesn't work.

These are not created by HandBrake, but I get them on my system as well. They are created when I run dvdbackup here, so presumably one of its support libraries.
Thanks for the info. Now I know what to tell the next person that has this problem

Yep, looks like a completely valid use case for it. I'll add it to our issues list as a feature request. Can't guarantee any ETA.

Re: Using "Unknown" audio as defaults

So you want to distinguish "Any" from "Unknown"? I.e. you want the ability to select *only* the unknown tracks and *not* tracks that have a specific known language. In my experience, it's rare for a source to have unknown language tracks together with some known language tracks. Do you have an examp...

Re: Creating a static build for CentOS 7?

On Linux, several system libraries are used. If you install the static versions of this libraries instead of dynamic, it should link them statically. But in some cases, Linux distributions don't supply the static versions of libraries. I don't know if this is the case with CentOS, but if it is, you ...

Re: Hanbarke Newbie

The container (mp4 or mkv) has virtually nothing to do with the size of the file. The quality of the audio and video and the efficiency of the encoders are the only factors that matter when it comes to file size. If you want smaller files, encode with lower quality, lower bitrate settings or a more ...

Re: Working with a 30 fps disk that came from 24 fps source

Thanks. I think the detelecine filter is the right advice here. Most of the time, 24fps content is signalled with special flags in the video that allows HandBrake to convert from the native 29.97 DVD framerate back to 24fps. So the detelecine filter is not needed in these cases and can actually caus...

Re: Hanbarke Newbie

Thank you. Do I need to remove the installed version of Handbrake before installing the version from the Handbrake Site via a PPA?. To be on the safe side, you should probably remove the old version. If the package names are the same, the PPA version should override the old version, but I don't kno...

Re: Best settings to convert old VHS footage

What makes you think the audio is 64kbps? According to your log it's pretty much spot on. See "track 1" [00:14:30] mux: track 0, 12900 frames, 242214736 bytes, 3754.98 kbps, fifo 1024 [00:14:30] mux: track 1, 24185 frames, 16593733 bytes, 257.25 kbps, fifo 2048 That bitrate is calculated based on th...

Re: Bitrate question just for basic understanding

Since the video plays correctly, it's just a matter of tuning your settings to get your preferred file size to quality trade-off. You might try stronger denoise setting just to see if it helps. You can also try a slower video encoder preset (e.g. medium or slow instead of fast). Slower encoder prese...

Re: Bitrate question just for basic understanding

Have you looked at the encoded file? Does it play correctly? Even home made DVDs usually have encryption. And your log indicates you have nothing installed to decrypt the disc. The encoded video may be garbled. Encoding video that hasn't been decrypted will result in large files. If the video isn't ...

Re: Bitrate question just for basic understanding

As Woodstock said, we need to see your log. We don't know if you changed any of the "Fast 720p30" settings. Your other statements about bitrate etc indicate that you may have. 4000kbps is higher than necessary unless you are attempting to make an archival copy to preserve the video without losing an...

Re: Working with a 30 fps disk that came from 24 fps source

So lets say I have a DVD that is 30 fps, and it was originally a 24 fps source. I can see, very consistently: two copies of one frame, a frame that is a mix of 2, and then three copies of the next frame. My goal is to output a 24 fps video that has just the 2/3 pattern, skipping the mix frame. How ...

Re: Mp4 Encodes suddenly stopped working / Win 10

It appears your source file only has Nero style chapter markers. I recreated your chapter problem and discovered a very old bug in how we handle chapter markers like these. It's pretty much never worked, so when you say, "t no longer shows correct times for chapters/titles", you must have been using...
