Re: too many titles returned for a small minority of dvds

Titles on a DVD are not a 1 to 1 mapping with actual stream content on the disc. A title is like a playlist. I provides a list of files that when played end to end represent some content. Some producers of DVDs create lots of dummy titles that, when played, show the content in the wrong sequence. Th...

Re: Ubuntu PPA out of date?

I hadn't realized that the flatpaks were the current way to go. I've been easing them in. Doing a fairly soft push to get people to switch. I'll still be producing Ubuntu releases for quite some time I think. But the flatpaks let me address all the rest of the linux distros that I've never had a go...

Re: Ubuntu PPA out of date?

Another reason to prefer flatpak. I wouldn't have to follow any distros release schedule and create new HandBrake builds for every new distro release. Imagine how much more actual work on HandBrake I could do if I could get rid of these janitorial chores

Re: Ubuntu PPA out of date?

due to the massive storage overhead for the runtimes That is a one time thing. Runtimes are shared between flatpak apps, so if you run multiple flatpaks (as I do) the overhead is nominal. Could I prevail upon you to add a disco (Ubuntu 19.04) release to your configuration on it? I honestly didn't r...

Re: Large Files

some Blu-ray’s are encoded with higher and better quality? No. Some video is harder to encode than other. Noise and motion are just a couple of things that can make video harder to encode. Harder to encode video requires a higher bitrate to achieve a given quality. Trying to match "iTunes quality" ...

Re: Large Files

When it comes to file size, you can't compare and encode of one source with an encode of another source. HandBrake uses constant quality encoding by default, which means it uses whatever bitrate is required to maintain consistent output quality. E.g. a video of a talking head with very little motion...

Re: Is it possible to fix my subtitles being cut off during a hardsubbing session

I've tested it with a different source video and the subtitles are all there.... Does this mean the problem lies with the video source? The video definitely has a problem. But it's possible the problem could be handled better. It really depends on just how bad the video is in the area this is happe...

Re: Ubuntu PPA out of date?

I still have a VM that runs ubuntu nightly builds, but I don't pay a lot of attention to it. It's been down for a while. I just kicked it back to life, so updates should appear again. But as Woodstock points out, the flatpak is a better option. And as of yesterday, we are also distributing a flatpak...

Depends on what preset you use. Presets intended for web delivery or streaming have this enabled by default.

Re: OT: How to get properties

mediainfo can also be used to query individual properties with it's '--Inform' option (at least the linux version of mediainfo can do this) e.g. $ mediainfo --Inform=Video\;%CodecID% test.mkv V_MPEG4/ISO/AVC Syntax of the command line will differ somewhat since you are on windows. Above is what is r...

Re: Video/Quality settings

IMO, it's best to use constant quality encoding. Animation requires much much lower bitrate to produce good quality than grainy action flicks on film. Constant quality encoding will automatically adjust the bitrate lower for animation and higher for other more difficult sources. Depending on the rat...

Re: Video/Quality settings

Why are you using average bitrate rather than constant quality encoding? Constant quality encoding will be faster since it doesn't require an extra pass and will result in more consistent quality from one encode to the next. Different source material can require vastly different bitrates to get equi...

Re: Is it possible to fix my subtitles being cut off during a hardsubbing session

So meaning in other words, unless I change the source video, it is impossible to fix this missing subtitles issue? There are a lot of possibilities for what is going wrong here. It could be HandBrake dropped the subtitle. It could be that HandBrake rendered the subtitle into a video frame that had ...

Your source video has a lot of errors in it... Ah, right, if the output is 1080p, the output level should be at least 4.

Re: HEVC Encoder Level?

Even if you can't set it, I'm curious to see logs why OP's content would be L2 when he wants L4.1. Seems like auto should DTRT. When the level is unspecified, x265 sets the level to the appropriate value given the other provided settings. When the level is specified, it checks if the other provided...

Re: HEVC Encoder Level?

It appears that support for setting encoder levels was added to x265 a few months *after* initial support for x265 was added to HandBrake and nobody ever caught it and implemented x265 level support in HandBrake. You can manually add it to the "More Settings" box on the video tab, e.g. "level-idc=5....

Re: Size/Scale issue with "Vimeo" preset ? GHB GUI (good) vs HandbrakeCLI (wrong)

I'm surprised that's not been caught previously. There is a flag in the preset that tells HandBrake to keep the display aspect ratio of the source. The CLI is ignoring that flag  Should be fixed in the next nightly build https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/commit/51db96b48206a4316297feec99d...

Well, it looks like we are already doing what I was thinking we should do :P If the gap between start times at the beginning of the streams is less than one frame period, we are extending the start time and frame duration to fill the gap. If the gap is greater than a frame period, we insert black fr...

Ah, never mind. No need for a sample. I see why the log indicates that both streams start at 0. This log indicates the state of the buffers output by sync, not the input to sync. Everything makes sense now 8)

Re: First frame of encoding is black

Seems reasonable. Except that I can't reproduce the issue. So I'm not exactly sure that the problem is here :? Audio pre-roll isn't factored in till *after* sync (in the encoder) so it's not that. Sync sees that the streams start at the same time, so I have no idea why there would be a blank frame....

Re: First frame of encoding is black

Disable the Align A/V Start setting on the Summary tab. Doing this could ruin audio video sync if your video has MP4 edit lists. I thought about mentioning this, but the log indicated that audio and video streams both started at PTS 0. So there should not have been any initial blank frames. But now...
