Re: Encoded video terrible color and sharpness

Issue 2561 was fixed in 1.3.2 and is the only one that should affect this particular encode. Issue 2859 should only be triggered when crop/scale and one of our other filters are both enabled. The encode in the posted log does not crop or scale. So if a nightly build fixes this, I would be a bit conf...

Re: Best settings for bluray rips?

Does your playback environment support h.265 10bit? If so, do some tests with x265 10bit encoding. It will generally reduce blockiness that often shows up in darker scenes with 8bit encoding. For the samples that encoded on the larger side, try those samples again with the NLMeans denoise filter. Ev...

Re: Best Settings for Home Movies

I'm surprised how large your test encode at reduced resolution is coming out. May need to reduce the quality a bit on the RF slider. Is the camera generating grainy video? Low light can result in a lot of grain. If so, the NLMeans denoise filter will clean that and reduce file sizes. Even if there ...

Re: Not so much 4K video compatible.

It should be noted that both versions will play fine from a computer. They will need to be observed via a streaming device such as AppleTV on an external display to see the differences (I hope). Do I understand you right? You are saying there is no distortion when playing back on your computer and ...

Re: Handbrake-CLI - Invalid preset

Should be fixed in the next nightly build https://github.com/HandBrake/HandBrake/commit/6fbe60b266fed099f49616ecef34db88b6bb3f4b We may want to spin a 1.3.3 release soon since this is an interface bug that will affect pretty much everyone useing the CLI. Turns out I didn't really bust it. It was alr...

Interesting, it should work without the full path (category prefix). Will investigate. Glad you got it working with the workaround. :) Oh, *insert favourite expletive*. I may have inadvertently busted this. I made a "fix" to how presets are searched for and didn't test this case. *expletive**explet...

Re: Settings to Optimize for Grayscale?

Seems like a lot of bandwidth could be saved when I know the material is gray-only Only if it's "dirty" gray. I.e. if it's an unclean transfer that has significant low level noise in the color components, then it'll use quite a lot more space if you don't enable the grayscale filter. But if it's cl...

Oh, and FYI, you are the first person to report success using NVENC on linux that I know of. None of us have tested it  I've never tested because I don't like installing proprietary drivers. I use Fedora and they do not provide packages. Since drivers must be EFI signed, not having official...

Re: nvenc unavailable on Ubuntu 20.04

The GUI Flatpak includes the CLI. To run it:

Code: Select all

flatpak run --command=HandBrakeCLI fr.handbrake.ghb <cli arguments>
That should solve your problem of using GUI presets

Re: VHS to MP4..enhance quality

You'll also want to deinterlace or detelecine. Are these home videos, tv shows, or movies? Depending on the type of video, you'll want to enable either decomb, or detelecine. For home videos and tv shows, you'll want decomb. For movies you'll want detelecine.

Possibly an extremely old blog post. AVI output was removed from HandBrake 10 years ago because the format does not support many of the features HandBrake now has.

Re: Re-Encode size LARGE

In all this, nobody bothered to mention that the file size problem is due to his choice of RF. RF 0 means encode losslessly. The encoder it attempting to preserve every last detail and that requires lots of bits. So, don't "futz" with the RF. If you require BD spec compatibility, you will have to fu...

Re: Application crashes on selecting source to scan

It also seems like you've tried everything but the latest stable release 1.3.1. 1.3.0 had the DVD problem you reference. Nightly builds have some more extensive new feature work going into them right not so may not be stable. So 1.3.1 would probably be the best choice at this point in time.

Re: Any Reason for GPU encodes if Quality is Priority

I'm not very familiar with the nvenc options but I believe it has a few "encoder presets" (on the video pane in the HandBrake gui) that are meant to tune the quality for size tradeoff. IIRC, people have commented that on some hardware, some presets don't appear to change the output in any meaningful...

Re: Getting washed/ faded colours videos after compressing

Minus the snark, there are always bugs. Bugs are the reason we do a series of bugfix releases after each major update. x.y.0 is a major update, x.y.1 would be the first bugfix release of x.y.0. We really should push out another bugfix release soon as we've had a number of fixes go in since the last....

Re: How do you select to copy video?

Did HandBrake use avcodec at all until Van implemented it (IIRC somewhere in the 0.9.x run)? First entry in git is for v0.1 which is using libav for mpeg4 encode. You are correct, it's using libmpeg2 for mpeg2 decode, I didn't look close enough at the decode code. The decoder is using avpicture_dei...

Re: How do you select to copy video?

Handbrake is in various places listed as a front end for ffmpeg, I'm not sure if this is still the case. HandBrake was originally designed for BeOS. It originally use libavcodec (one of ffmpeg's libraries) for mpeg2 decoding and mpeg4 encoding only . Some additional history is in our docs. Over tim...

Perfect, thanks.

Your videos are using a "full range" color space. There is a bug in the current release that causes full range color to be converted wrong. Can you give the nightly build a try?

If it hasn't changed recently, unraid is based on slackware. A google search shows that slakware has a flatpak package. But I don't know what version of slakware the current unraid is based on and if that version supports flatpak. So it might be possible to install flatpak then install the flatpak v...

Re: Calculate New Video Bitrate

RF 20. Quality is as good as 2-pass ABR and bitrate is always "optimal". I.e. you don't need to tweak the bitrate for every source. Just use the same RF for everything. If the quality isn't good enough for you use a lower RF, but 20 is generally agreeable to most people.
