Re: Xbox 360 and 5.1 help

As you probably know, the Xbox 360 can not play mkv files, much less 5.1 in mkv files. The only formats that the Xbox can play with 5.1 are WMV and avi subject to the caveats here: http://blogs.msdn.com/xboxteam/archive/2007/11/30/december-2007-video-playback-faq.aspx So have you tried encoding to a...

Re: Subtitles

It may be an unusual case, but some movies have the subs hard-burned into the black letterbox beneath them. Therefore, you cannot crop the bottom letterbox and still have subtitles.

Re: [snapshot build]XviD + 2 Audio Tracks produces bad AVI files

I used to have success with two mp3 audio tracks in an avi container in maybe .9.1.

This is probably old news, and only indirectly related to Handbrake, but I ripped PAL Stranger than Fiction as movie-only using MTR and burned it (can't remember if I had to use DVD2OneX to shrink it). Some time later I actually sit down to watch it and the opening Village logo just loops indefinite...

G4 1.25ghz - can it handle anamorphic h.264 (@TV preset)

Hi folks, I see on Apple's system recommendations for 480p h.264 playback that a 1.25ghz G4 with 64mb graphics card is the minimum: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/guide/hd/recommendations.html Is that a realistic minimum for playing back anamorphic h.264 encodes using the @TV preset - on PAL DVDs in...

VisualHub from techspansion.com is a great tool that will do this very quickly and in batches (as well as a whole bunch of other things if you want it to). ffmpegx.com will also do it, but is less intuitive to use.

You can also choose movie properties in Quicktime and click on the video track to adjust its display resolution if it is looking vertically stretched, etc.

I have tried both the mplayer.dll etc linked to here, and just installed the latest T3CH XBMC, but neither allows my Xbox to play an h.264 file created in Handbrake with the iPod (baseline) default OSX setting at 1600kbps... just stutters to a halt. Any tips? Edit: just tried encoding the same file ...

It seems to depend on the DVD. The last couple I looked at had simple menus with a video playing behind static buttons - this whole thing was stored in one of the vob files, and I converted it using ffmpegx.

Handbrake x.264 avis and standalone avi players / DVD conver

Hi, I did a 1000kbps x.264 on Handbrake 0.7.1, with passthrough of the 5.1 track and prologic commentary. Are standalone avi players generally coping with x.264 these days (eg. via firmware updates)? On another issue, a friend I gave it to tried to convert it back to DVD with 'Ulead Movie Factory 5'...

Possible feature: finding 'hidden' extras

On most DVDs I've seen, extras (deleted scenes etc) are in separate tracks that Handbrake finds and lists in the dropdown menu for possible encoding. However, a DVD I played recently featured a commentary audio track, with branching points where a graphic appeared on screen allowing you to press 'en...

Preserving letterboxing for burned-in subtitles waste space?

Hi folks, I would like to convert a 2.35:1 DVD movie I have to avi. In a few scenes it has a brief subtitle appearing underneath the movie frame, which is 'burned in' (ie. can't be switched on or off). For simplicity, I was going to encode the movie to avi and only crop out the top letterbox. I am a...

Using ffmpegx to mux second audio track? or some other way?

I know people have been posting about the sad loss of the two audio track feature, but I haven't seen this question come up. That is, ffmpegx.com describes its ability to mux an avi file with another audio track. Ideally, I would use MediaFork to rip H264 with passthrough AC3 audio, then mux in the ...

So, if I get some jerky pans in movies where ffmpegx reports the original VIDEO_TS as 29fps, I should set Handbrake's fps to 29 too? My first attempt using 'same as source' produced a 23.9fps avi, and I noticed one pan in particular was pretty jerky. How about where ffmpegx reports the original as '...

ffmpegx.com has a gui for them.

I am pretty hard-pressed to discern any difference above 1500kbps on 264 (main) 2-pass encoding at 720x368 (anamorphic), with AC3 passthrough; and I've compared it to 2000kbps, 2500kbps, 3000kbps. I've noticed that ffmpegx recommends a 'best bitrate' of about 750 for this resolution, so wonder why t...
