Hi all, I've had cropping set to Automatic but noticed when I encoded Star Trek Into Darkness is cut off the top of the picture.
What's the recommended setting for cropping? I re-encoded it using "None" and that worked better, but should I still leave it as Automatic by default?

Re: Quality RF levels
I understand how the slider works, my question is why would 2 films where the end result is 10Mbps yield one that looks great (RF24) and one that looks terrible (RF30) - they're both 10Mbps so they should look equally good quality?

Quality RF levels
Hi all, Bit of a noob question so be gentle! When encoding films in handbrake I always aim for a bitrate of 10Mbps. Most films can achieve this without needing to move the RF number above 24, some need it pushing to 26, but on a few I've noticed that I have to go as high as 30. Anything beyond 26 se...

24GB in tmp folder
I've currently got 24GB of data in fr.handbrake.HandBrakeXPCService > Data > tmp with sub-folders starting "HB." followed by a number. Are they needed or can they be deleted??

Unfortunately have to say goodbye to Handbrake
So after having nothing but problems with handbrake since upgrading to a M2 Mac Studio a few months ago I'm unfortunately having to give up with Handbrake and give up encoding my own films. I've been using Handbrake for around 5 years now and until I switched to the M2 Mac Studio I never had a singl...

Audio out of sync on finished film
I've tried encoded a film, Green Book, but each time I try the audio is out of sync when I play it using VLC/INA player, it starts ok, but as soon as I skip forwards/backwards, the audio goes all over the place. I'm using v1.6.1. Activity log as follows: [11:59:38] macgui: Handbrake Version: 1.6.1 (...

But I did two films before this that came out at around 8GB with the same RF.

Converted file coming out bigger than source?!
I'm having a weird problem trying to convert Aliens, the source file is 32.6GB but when I run it through handbrake it comes out at 41.2GB?! I'm using v1.6.1 and my preset settings are as follows. Activity log is at the bottom: Preset: Plex (1080p) Source: /Volumes/T7/Encoding Queue/Aliens_t09.mkv De...

Why is my converted file sizee bigger than the source?!
So I'm trying to convert Aliens which is a 40gb file using the following settings, but the converted file is coming out at 56gb! Does anyone know why this would be?? Re: Consistent problems completing encodes
So this is definitely a problem with Handbrake, I've just set the same file going on my Mac Studio (which is where I'm having the issues) and and my MacBook Air, the Mac studio failed after encoding 30 mins of the film, the MacBook Air finished no problem whatsoever

Consistent problems completing encodes
I've been having consistent problems completing encodes and someone has previously suggested it was because of a "bad rip", even through makemkv reports a successful rip and used other sources. Here's the activity log from my latest attempt, can anyone offer any alternative other than &quo...

Here's the activity log from two files I tried to encode today, both of which failed part way through: [18:22:16] macgui: fr.handbrake.HandBrakeXPCService scanning specifically for title: 1 [18:22:16] CPU: [18:22:16] - logical processor count: 12 [18:22:16] hb_scan: path=/Users/benherbert/Documents/...

Scream (2022) stops after 1hr 14 mins
I've been trying to convert Scream (2022) from a mkv file which I've done a thousand times, but every time I try it stops 1 hour 14 minutes through the film. I've checked the source file and it's complete so I can't work out why it keeps stopping the encode at the exact same point. The file is on th...

Encoding directly from external ssd - fast enough?
I’m looking at getting a Mac Studio and don’t know whether to go for 512gb or 1tb hdd. I need the extra storage space as I do a lot of work with Handbrake. My question is, I have a 2tb Samsung T7 external hdd, will this be fast enough to encode files directly from with handbrake? This is what the we...

Average Bitrate vs. Constant Quality
Does anyone use "Average Bitrate" under Video when encoding over "Constant Quality"? All the videos I've seen recommend adjusting the quality slider, no one really talks about average bitrate. I like to keep my encodes around 20-25Mpbs and think that using average bitrate might b...

Re: Best Preset for 4K using MacBook M1 Pro
x265 is a higher efficiency software encoder, but it's slow. VTB is a lower efficiency hardware encoder, but it's fast. Apple 4K preset, with your choice of encoder, is a good starting point. So presumably lower efficiency also means larger files? Also, when you suggest using the Apple 4k preset I ...

Best Preset for 4K using MacBook M1 Pro
Hi all, I have a MBP M1 Pro. I use handbrake to encode films and store them on my Synology NAS and then watch via Plex on TV's in my house. I'm curious to know what presets people use on an M1 MBP, specifically what's the difference between H.265 and H.265 (VideoToolBox)? My main goal is to rip 4K v...
