Problem solved: I used… 1. Handbrake to turn the VOB+IFO files into a single MP4 2. VobSub to extract the subtitles from the VOB+IFO into SUB+IDX; They are bitmaps not text 3. Subtitle Edit to read the SUB+IDX, run the material through the provided OCR eg. Tesseract, fixing the inevitable glitches, ...

So apparently, a DVD doesn't hold subtitles as text, but as bitmaps.

So the next step, is extracting those as SUB+IDX, running those into an OCR using eg. SubtitleEdit, fixing the inevitable errors, saving the output as an SRT file, and finally converting the VOBs into an MP4 file.

Without knowing what I'm doing, I tried VobSub to get idx+sub, and then SubRip… which requires me to confirm each letter to turn them fro bitmap to text :-/
