UTF-8 .srt subtitles
Looking at HB 0.9.9, I see the default English .srt character code setting is ISO-8859-1 Since (I think) ISO-8859-1 is a subset of UTF-8, I am wondering if it might be a good idea to make UTF-8 the default. The reason I make this post is that I encountered a UTF-8 .srt file I wanted to add to a vide...

Re: VOBSUB subtitles in MP4 as a private stream
I experimented with this on Mac + HB 0.9.5 * Encode non-subtitled MP4 * Encode non-burned in Subitled MKV * Open MP4 with Subler and click "+" * Open the MKV and only check the subtitle track, then click "add", then save. VLC player can display the optional Subtitles, but not iTu...

0.9.5 - Title not copied to iPod ... cannot be played ...
After updating from HB 0.9.4 to 0.9.5, I discovered I could no longer copy my videos to my 2nd Gen iPod Touch. When trying to drag videos to the iPod, I got the error: Title could not be copied to the iPod ... because it cannot be played on this iPod. I had been encoding videos using presets that ha...

Re: quality of DVD -> iPod Touch is better in 0.9.4 than 0.9
I don't understand the "Picture Settings" > "Filters" > "Decomb <-> Deinterlace" slider switch. Can you only Decomb or Deinterlace, but not both? OK, I guess that is the case, from reading https://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/DeinterlacingGuide Decomb or Deinterlace, but not ...

Re: Can Closed Captions be preserved, transcoding MP4 to MP4
Now I'm wondering if there is a way to get the captions from a .MOV file. Subler will not open .MOV Sometimes I edit out commercials using SimpleMovieX, but the only way I can preserve captions after editing is to save as a .MOV file. If I convert the .MOV to .MP4, the captions get lost and Subler c...

Re: Can Closed Captions be preserved, transcoding MP4 to MP4
Cool! Thanks.
Looks like Subler can bring over, not only the Closed Captions track but also the Chapters track from the previous MP4 file.

Can Closed Captions be preserved, transcoding MP4 to MP4
I want to transcode an existing MP4 file 640x368 to 480x272, to optimize the video file size for iPhone. The MP4 includes optional Closed Captions (tx3g) When I transcode the MP4, using HB 0.9.4, the Captions are not copied over to the smaller file. Is there some way I can demux the captions from th...

I'm not sure what you mean by "iTunes server". If I access a web optimized movie (tags edited with Meta X on Mac OS), from a web server (http protocol) using the QuickTime plug-in in a web browser, the movie starts to play shortly after the download begins, and I can see the download bar m...

Re: Web Optimized
I'm interested in using "Web Optimize" but wondering if there is any downside to using it. The tags referred to are outside my sphere of knowledge. I use MetaX on Mac, to add artwork and a description to the Metadata. Will this be slower if the video is encoded "Web Optimized"? I...

svn2907 Intermittent crash, KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS
Just FYI, in case it may be helpful. Maybe it's an OS bug? I looked in the TRAC but not sure if this type of crash has been reported. There were some similar reports in the forum, but supposedly they had been fixed?? Occurs once in a while with different encodes. Work-around just seems to be to rebo...

Invisible director's commentary track
I have a DVD which includes a director's commentary track. VLC player has no problem selecting between the soundtrack and the commentary track, however, HandBrake svn 2907, NicePlayer, nor the Apple DVD player program, can see the director's commentary audio. These programs only show the soundtrack ...

[Fixed] Ö character in captions crashes iPod Touch playback
I'm please to report that svn2907 appears to fix a playback issue on the iPod Touch 2nd Gen OS 3.1.2 Playback of an svn2845 encoded movie would crash on the iPod when a Swedish Ö character was encountered in the optional text captions. Encoding the movie with svn2907 appears to fix the problem. The ...

Re: Any way to disable the encoded subtitle track, by default?
Thanks for the explanation. Kind of funny how Quicktime player and NicePlayer are polar opposites in this respect, if enabled NicePlayer can't turn subtitles off, if disabled, Quicktime Player can't turn subtitles on. I tested iTunes 9.0.1 and iPod Touch 3.1.2 and they don't have any problem with th...

Any way to disable the encoded subtitle track, by default?
I've been experimenting with rendering the optional closed captions with the svn2845 64bit build. When I play the resulting .m4v file in "NicePlayer", I get the captions, but have no way to turn them off. (VLC, Quicktime Player and iTunes turn the subtitles off by default. NicePlayer is th...

Save Deinterlace setting in custom Preset
I notice this in 0.9.3 and also observe in SVN 2845, that the Deinterlace setting is not saved in the custom presets created by the user. I think it would be nice if it saved. Most DVDs seem to be interlaced and I like to deinterlace them. I always click my custom preset, but I often forget to manua...

Re: Obscene Handbrake Speeds *g*
I have the problem with HandBrake 0.9.3 and Leopard 10.5.6 All my RAM is going Inactive. Slows down my machine, though nothing crashes. This article suggested that disk reads for large media files could be non-cached, which might alleviate the problem. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?thread...
