Re: Video compression.
It occurred to me that when I say there's not much difference in output filesize between presets ultrafast to placebo , I'm just stating my own impression from recently using Handbrake for the first time. I decided to do a quick test[1] using RF=30 for comparison: Preset - processing time - size per...

Re: Video compression.
I was looking for that setting too. Sadly, it's not that easy. There's no one-size-fits all when balancing "maximum" this, and "normal" that. The easiest thing I found is 1) pick a scene in your source. 2) use the "range" at the top right of the screen. Change it from c...

Re: How to match previous RF setting?
If a video was encoded with handbrake, it stores the encoding details which mediainfo will report to you. But, other videos don't have this info. I think anytime you reencode there will be loss. I'm a newbie, I don't know. But, if it were me and wanted to match the input filesize, I would set the vi...

Re: "loudnorm" (ffmpeg) filter?
Thank you for your answers. I understand now. I'm having some challenge translating the gui encode log into a command-line. I may start a new thread. But, this one fits here: --normalize-mix Normalize audio mix levels to prevent clipping. <string> Separate tracks by commas. 0 = Disable Normalization...

"loudnorm" (ffmpeg) filter?
I'm encoding a DVD rip (mpeg2, ac3, ripped with MakeMKV) to h264, aac. Therefore, I thought I could use the audio tab's DRC to normalize the audio. It didn't seem like it was doing anything (more about that in a moment). Googling for other ideas, I found a really informative Superuser answer . Optio...

Re: AMD Vega/Mesa GPU (VAAPI support?)
@s55 , thank you. I googled about it. I'm not brave enough to venture into this (with my Linux desktop). I like stability. It always seems like Linux problems have to do with video drivers and kernel versions (conflicts). I'm not that passionate to go down that route (trying to figure out why VCE/N?...

AMD Vega/Mesa GPU (VAAPI support?)
Description of problem or question: I have an AMD Ryzen 5/Vega 8 laptop (running MX Linux 19.4 which installs Mesa 20.3.4 graphics driver). When I use obs-studio (26.1.2+dfsg1-1~mx19+1) for screen recording, settings>output gives me an encoder choice "FFMPEG VAAPI" (which in turn enables ...

Re: 1.3.3 doesn't access DVDs?
The fob file on the disk is about 900mb. The rip is 860mb. I wanted to clarify one thing. I was happy they were almost the same size (without having to think about quality settings). But, they're more the same than I said above. I was mixing mb and mib (megabyte, mebibyte. About a 1/2% difference))...

Re: 1.3.3 doesn't access DVDs?
HandBrake is a transcoder. If you want the output smaller, different resolution, or with a different video or audio codec, you would use HandBrake. If you simply want a copy of the disc, MakeMKV does that better. I agree and understand. I didn't mean to disparage Handbrake by comparing how long its...

Re: 1.3.3 doesn't access DVDs?
I started to shudder when I found MakeMKV (needs to be compiled.). But, since MX Linux's package installer has a large collection of flatpaks, I looked there. I found it. (Then I worried the flatpak sandbox would be a problem again like it was with Handbrake). It worked great!. The fob file on the d...

Re: 1.3.3 doesn't access DVDs?
John, Mduell: thank you! I didn't realize flatpack had this sandbox thing. I found "flatseal" in MX Linux's Package Installer>Flatpack repository. I installed that & enabled some things for the Handbrake flatpack. Then I was able to choose /dev/sr0 as a source. The dvd drive spun for a...

1.3.3 doesn't access DVDs?
I've been using Handbrake 1.3.0. It detects the attached DVD drive, and displays /dev/sr0 in the file pulldown menu. (If I click that, it populates the chapters tab with the contents of the DVD). I thought I would try 1.3.3 because I read it might have gpu support (I have an AMD Vega 8, mesa driver....
