Re: HandBrake NTSC-PAL question
Awesome. I noticed something else too so I'll add it here just in case it helps someone else in the future. After ripping the entire disc with MakeMKV, when I tried to play the movie files themselves in VLC, they constantly flashed off and on. Actually it seemed to be constantly flashing between the...

HandBrake NTSC-PAL question
So I am in the UK and so we use region 2 PAL here. I just bought a DVD from the US which is region 1 NTSC. I didn't expect to be able to rip/encode it at all. But I tried anyway. I fired up MakeMKV and ripped the disc as usual. MakeMKV showed lots of errors while ripping - "Region setting of DV...

Re: What is this defect called?
Sorry, I ended the post a bit early there. But what is the correct term for these colors? I can't research it because I don't know what it's called. And is there any way to get rid of those defects? Using deinterlace always on, Bob mode and FPS same as source (50fps) fixes it but loses quality elsew...

What is this defect called?
Movies are generally fine.
But on some older TV sitcoms from a few decades ago, the encoded videos sometimes show these weird colors:

Denoise is essential for DVDs?
So when using any preset with DVDs, I wondered why most of them (if not all) came out all fuzzy with dots all over the screen (sometimes flickering dots). For a while, I thought it was a problem with HandBrake but then I noticed that the fuzzy image is visible in the original MKV files too (ripped u...

Re: Do I really need to deinterlace a DVD?
Ah. When you say problematic for some popular editing programs, do you mean programs like DaVinci Resolve? Because I was planning on using Resolve at some point. Is no interlace detection/decomb bob, same as source/CFR still a good idea (instead of default Fast 576p25 preset)?

Re: Do I really need to deinterlace a DVD?
So if I choose no interlace detection (off), deinterlace decomb bob, and video framerate same as source, there is a choice between constant and variable framerate. Does it matter which I choose? Using same as source framerate produces a 50fps mp4 (PAL UK) so does the default option of variable frame...

Re: [META] Thank you + How do you guys stay in business?
Indeed. I used to use WinXDVD. I bought a lifetime license. What I didn't realise was that they regularly bring out completely new versions and my so-called 'lifetime license' only lasted until they brought out a new version. When they did, they wanted me to buy another 'lifetime license'. Oh and wh...

Changing settings after starting a queue
Hello, So I load up HandBrake and queue up a few folders by opening each folder and clicking add all to queue? So I start the queue off. Now, if I change any settings at all after starting the queue, does it affect the videos in the queue? So after starting the queue, if I then change the video reso...

Re: Do I really need to deinterlace a DVD?
So your DVD preset is basically 576p25 default but with interlace detection off, deinterlace set to Decomb Bob and framerate set to Same as Source (producing double-framerate files)? You don't change any other settings from 576p25 defaults for your DVD preset? My optician hates me for never being ab...

Re: Do I really need to deinterlace a DVD?
I have to say, Woodstock, that after trying your settings on a few DVDs, they look really good and better than before. So your advice for the best general settings for DVDs is to use the 576p25 preset (I use Fast) and manually set Interlace Detection to Off, deinterlace to Decomb Bob and video FPS t...

Re: Do I really need to deinterlace a DVD?
I see so deinterlacing a 25fps video will always output 50fps. Given that then, would you still recommend setting fps to same as source? Seems strange to have a 50fps MP4. Is there any quality benefit over 25fps? I mean, if I played the DVD disc directly, it would be 25fps anyway.

Re: Do I really need to deinterlace a DVD?
Many thanks for your reply. I tried the settings you recommended (Interlace Detection: Off, Deinterlace Filter: Decomb & Bob, Video: Variable Framerate, Same as Source) and the color banding is definitely better. So I should use these settings for all DVDs (movies and TV programmes)? One strange...

Re: Do I really need to deinterlace a DVD?
How do I disable comb detection? Do I need to modify the Handbrake start menu shortcut to this: "C:\Program Files\HandBrake\HandBrake.exe" --no-comb-detect Or can I do it from the Handbrake interface? Or do you mean I should set Deinterlace to Decomb (default) and Interlace Detection to Of...

Do I really need to deinterlace a DVD?
I noticed on some UK DVDs containing TV series (such as George & Mildred, Minder, Dame Edna Experience, etc), that sometimes color banding exists in the output file. I'm encoding to Fast 576p25. I tried toggling various settings to remove the color banding and the one that actually removes it is...

Re: Best preset for DVD quality
Actually, every single preset except Production presets has Deinterlace set to Decomb by default so this can't be the reason. One thing I can see is that 1080p uses encoder level 4 but 720p and 576p use encoder level 3.1. This seems to change bufsize and maxrate. I don't know if this would give 1080...

Re: Best preset for DVD quality
Thanks Woodstock but with my computer, all of the 'General' presets have Deinterlace set to 'Decomb' by default. The only difference is the 'Very Fast' presets have 'Fast' interlace detection and all the others have 'Default' interlace detection. But 1080p30, 720p30, 576p25 and 480p30 all have Deint...

Re: Best preset for DVD quality
I didn't intend to. For a DVD, why is it better to use 576p25 instead of 720p30 or 1080p30 if the resolution is the same in the output file (assuming that the quality slider is set to the same for all 3)? And if there is a difference in output quality for DVDs with those 3 presets, what is the diffe...

Re: Best preset for DVD quality
So are you saying that there's no difference in quality between 576p25 and 720p30 and 1080p30 for DVD commercial movies (UK PAL region 2)? In that case, why is it better to use 576p25 instead of 1080p30 if the resolution and quality is going to be the same?

Re: Best preset for DVD quality
Oh, I see. So you're saying that using 1080p30 or 720p30 will not be any better quality (not even a tiny bit better) than 576p25 for UK PAL region 2 commercial movies? You're saying that using 1080p30 or 720p30 will actually produce worse quality than 576p25?

Re: Why is cropping managed in this non-nonsensical way?
Thanks for the in-depth reply s55. I never thought of using the Preview window with the dimensions settings. It's crude and it's frustrating that i need to have the preview window open, it would be much better if it worked like the Summary preview window, but it's better nothing. @musicvid, I have u...

Best preset for DVD quality
Description of problem or question: I am encoding a lot of DVDs which to my knowledge are 720 x 576 PAL (UK). What is the best preset to use? HandBrake will encode the video with a resolution of around 704 x 544 (after automatic cropping, it varies). So is 720p the best option? Is there any quality...

Why is cropping managed in this non-nonsensical way?
Description of problem or question: Unless I'm missing something, setting the crop dimensions should be easier and more intuitive. I have lots of videos that I need to encode but I need to heavily crop them all. Automatic cropping doesn't work in this case (works fine generally but can't use it for...
